Ok so I was using my external hard drive on my ps3 and it was working perfectly fine and has been for months, then all the sudden the ps3 froze and so i turned it off then on and the external hard drive option wasnt on the ps3. I switched outlets, cables, everything. I plugged it into my computer and now it won't recognize the external hard drive. idk what to do. Usually its G: on the computer.

Agree... I had one do the same thing on me, wasnt connected to a PS3 but a PC and could not be recognized by any other PC.... I used EASEUS Data Recovery and was able to recover most stuff

Is this the only way? I don't have money to spend. And how do external hard drives crash?

same way internal drives do, the motor might have gave out, the plate could be screwy, etc,
do some searches on recovering data from a crashed HDD
the cheapest solution is to get a new drive and put it in your current inclosure, and transfer the data
there are all kinds of "tricks" to recover data, but these are risky if you don't want to pay a pro
I once froze a dead hard drive for a day and then got it to work long enough to copy the data to my desktop, the drive never worked again, but I was able to transfer the docs to the new one, however the amount of data was not much, I realize if I tried this with 200 gigs of music might not work as well

if you can hook up the hard drive to a PC and it works, then you shouldn't worry. I've run into this problem a couple times where the PS3 won't read a certain external media. What I do is transfer anything important off of the media to a PC/external hdd and format it. After that, it works fine.

The PS3 cannot recognize NTFS. I've got an external hdd that is formatted in NTFS that I'm plugging in and out right now and guess what, it's not showing up.

Dude! I am not talking about internal, ps3 to my absolute disgust does not recognize any thing, flash, thumb, usb external hard drive unless it is fat 32. Just reformat it to fat 32, it will do wonders! lol

I never said anything about internal. I've from the day the PS3 was launched that the only thing it reads is FAT32. But just for you, I've quoted myself and highlighted, bolded and underlined something.
