I don't know why I never heard of this, but I just discovered something pretty cool.
On my new PS3 slim, I have it hooked up to my Panasonic Viera 42" HDTV... it is hooked up with the HDMI cable. I went to use my TV REMOTE to change the color settings and I pressed the directional pad and noticed that it controlled my PS3 XMB!
In fact... all the dvd and directional remote features work via the IR through the TV... It is controlling the PS3 through the HDMI cable. So basically, this means that you don't need to buy the BT remote for the PS3 to watch movies if you have an HDMI tv.
I think there's a setting I turned on in the ps3 that was something like "Control for HDMI"...
Anyway... neat little find, I thought. I know a lot of people lament the lack of an IR receiver on the PS3, this is a big help for integrating Blu-ray/dvd controls into your universal remote.
There are some buttons obviously not there (like the O button and the PS button)... but for basic controls of the XMB and your movie watching, it is nice to know.
(sorry if this is old news, but I never realized it was in there)
EDIT: Btw, it DOES turn the ps3 on and off too... so, even better!
