TyrantII 10-07-09, 11:54 AM hey guys, I heard Obama was born in Kenya! No really! TornadoTJ 10-07-09, 01:32 PM My biggest gripe about 3.0 is how it has caused a problem with some BD playback. The PS3 has never had BD playback issues but, now that 3.0 has introduced some, Sony has been very slow to react. Other companies would have already released a new firmware fixing the playback issues by now, yet Sony has barely respond to them. I do not have a problem with the cosmetic changes but, I do have a problem with the BD playback issues since that is why I bought my PS3. Sony's lack of response is very disappointing and proves that BD playback really isn't a priority for them (on the PS3 at least). Can you elaborate on what the issues with BD playback are? This may be why both my PS3s are suddenly skipping during BD playback. BOTH systems started doing this at the SAME time, and have never had issues before. During playback of a CLEAN, scratch and dirt-free BD, it will skip up a few seconds occasionally. Sometimes if I rewind back the scene will play correctly, sometimes it will skip again at the same spot. This has occurred with 4 different BDs (all I've tried so far). bassmonkeee 10-07-09, 01:37 PM Can you elaborate on what the issues with BD playback are? This may be why both my PS3s are suddenly skipping during BD playback. BOTH systems started doing this at the SAME time, and have never had issues before. During playback of a CLEAN, scratch and dirt-free BD, it will skip up a few seconds occasionally. Sometimes if I rewind back the scene will play correctly, sometimes it will skip again at the same spot. This has occurred with 4 different BDs (all I've tried so far). Which discs? I've watched about 30 movies since 3.0, and I have only had one skipping issue that was resolved by cleaning the giant fingerprint off of the Netflix disc. TornadoTJ 10-07-09, 01:41 PM Cloverfield (I just got an Outlaw LFM-1EX and wanted to "hear" that movie - the movie isn't worth "watching" twice) Frost/Nixon My Best Friend's Girl The 4th I can't remember, took it back to Blockbuster last night along with 2 others. About to watch Observe and Report BD right now. I just did the 3.01 update. I might fire Cloverfield back up to watch a known scene that was skipping. I might also watch one of my Planet Earth BDs to see if they skip, I have never had a skipping issue up to now. Odd it's on both systems at the same time. bassmonkeee 10-07-09, 02:13 PM Hmmm....I watched Cloverfield recently without problem, but I couldn't say with certainty if it was before I updated to 3.0, or not. If it's still screwing up, let me know where it skips and I'll try it out. gooki 10-07-09, 03:13 PM FWIW. There's a possibility the latest firmware updates may also be flashing the drive firmware (changing the way it reads discs). I have seen one report where a user with faulty BD drive could not update their firmware. BradT 10-07-09, 03:16 PM I got the skipping and freezing during blurays and games shortly after updating, but I can't say if it's related to the update. I suspect it probably isn't. My coffin arrived monday and I shipped it out Tuesday. I doubt anything will come of this court case, but I'll be watching it. If it DOES turns out to be firmware related, Sony better own up and refund my repair costs. I'm already mad that the thing died this soon anyway. TornadoTJ 10-07-09, 03:19 PM Well, I have to say Observe and Report wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, but it did not skip after the 3.01 update. I'm going to put Cloverfield back in and try a scene I was able to reproduce the skipping on. I don't know the timestamp, but I was able to reproduce it over and over at the point where they go down into the subway and he's talking to his mom on his phone. TornadoTJ 10-07-09, 03:26 PM Cloverfield still skips. Timestamp 38:40. It skips again right after it jumps, then again as the army is leading them out of the subway. Doesn't appear the firmware fixed the problem, but there is every possibility this issue is the BD media, even though it shows no issues. It even skips when I rewind, whatever the spot is it is skipping, it skips it at 10x backward as well. joeblow 10-07-09, 03:52 PM Your disc is likely faulty. I watched Cloverfield this weekend - no skipping. bdwright77 10-07-09, 04:49 PM I'm still interested in hearing about the following: 1. A library of dynamic themes for purchase. We've gone two or three weeks of PS Store updates without any being made available. 2. The promised updated avatars library and premium avatars for purchase 3. The possibility of a firmware update to enable toggling of some features (as described in the EU PSBlog post). joeblow 10-07-09, 05:03 PM For your #2, the PSBlog rep told ign that the new avatars are nearing release. hazel_wu 10-07-09, 06:28 PM Some user has posted a possible fix for users who "lost" their BD drive after the update, meaning the PS3 no longer recognizes the drive/disc is inserted. The fix is to use the hidden recovery menu (google that) and do the "rebuild database" option. Hopefully it will fix your drive in 10 minutes and no need to pay Sony to have it fixed in a month. Vizion47 10-08-09, 09:38 AM For your #2, the PSBlog rep told ign that the new avatars are nearing release. link? I don't doubt, but I just want to see what he said. eddy_winds 10-08-09, 10:31 AM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXr30ZsolL8 It appears that firmware 2.50 also added one other feature, meant to help PS3 owners that are trying to troubleshoot their system. A recovery menu (pictured above) gives users access to a variety of restore features. It will even allow users to install a new firmware update, should anything go wrong during the installation process. To access the menu, you must hold down the power button to turn on the PS3 until you hear three beeps. Then the menu will show up. There are a few reports of systems bricking after firmware updates, so this may be Sony's attempt at creating a fix for future problems. Hopefully, we'll never have to actually use this feature -- but if we do, it may be a quick way of avoiding a trip to the post office to send the PS3 to Sony's support center. bdwright77 10-08-09, 10:40 AM Interesting (and good) find. Auditor_Kevin 10-08-09, 11:15 AM Good to hear they added that menu. I know everyone that's never had it happen to them thinks its conspiracy theory kookery, but my first PS3 (40 gigger) bit the big one immediately after updating and popping in a bluray. Can't remember which update it was, though. hdtv47lg70 10-09-09, 01:45 AM man i am still waiting for an update from either sony or pioneer so i can bitstream dts hd ma, before i buy this... sigh. TyrantII 10-09-09, 08:44 AM man i am still waiting for an update from either sony or pioneer so i can bitstream dts hd ma, before i buy this... sigh. You can, it's was in the 3.00 update. Your shiny lights now light up. eddy_winds 10-09-09, 10:57 AM PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience. Additional highlights from update 3.00 include: * “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format. * Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock. * Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles. * PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily. * Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background. * Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games. You can, it's was in the 3.00 update. Your shiny lights now light up. Don't see it.. TornadoTJ 10-09-09, 05:44 PM I bet it works on Sony receivers. LOL! Everything seems to work for me except I have noticed one thing unusual. I have searched this thread and could not find anyone else reporting a similar issue. Hoping someone a lot smarter than me can help me gain my sanity :D I can handle the larger font, however, when I play a game like Rock Band 2 or COD4, my the picture appears cropped on the sides. This was not the case prior to the update. I have a Panasonic AE2000U 1080p projector and a Onkyo TX-SR875 receiver all connected via HDMI. I can stream movies without issue, however disc based games seem to the be the problem. I am hoping someone can offer some advice :o gooki 10-13-09, 01:26 AM Has the PS3's output resolution changed/reset? TornadoTJ 10-13-09, 04:05 PM Rock Band has a setting for overscan. Bit streams perfectly fine to my Pioneer SC-07 which is basically the same reciever. Check your setup. Honey1 10-13-09, 05:09 PM Hi to you all, I have a European (French) PS3 working under firmware 2.42 and I'd like to upgrade to 2.8 but not to 3.0 or 3.01 since these last two seem to kill the BD drive on some consoles. I have found a site from which I have been able to download the US firmware 2.8. Here are my questions: 1. Will this US firmware work in my French PS3? Or wil it brick it? 2. If it does not work, do you know a site where I could download the French version of the firmware? Thanks a bunch! Ratnrol 10-13-09, 07:08 PM Has the PS3's output resolution changed/reset? I have gone into the settings option a few times and it still shows 1080p capable via HDMI. Is there a way that I can quickly see what the output is when playing a game? I have tried to find this, but no luck so far. Ratnrol 10-13-09, 07:09 PM Rock Band has a setting for overscan. I don't have COD4 so I don't know about it. Thanks Tornado. Would you be able to provide details on how I could check this option / setting to see what it is currently set on? eddy_winds 10-13-09, 07:11 PM Relax.. Update to 3.01 you'll be fine ;) 1. I am still not fully `relaxed' about upgrading to 3.01, though! There are definitely several PS3s that were bricked by the upgrade. What do you think caused the problem? Anyway, I am now at work and I am going to spend my day wondering if I update tonight to 2.8 or 3.01...Thanks again! ballen420 10-14-09, 08:07 AM interesting. just to confirm you have a ps3 slim with what version software? also has your sc-07 had any firmware updates? also what is the manufacturer date of your 07 PS3 Slim with 3.01 (the Slim is the only one that can bitstream). No firmware updates to my SC-07. Not sure on the manufacturers date, but I believe there was only one firmware update, and it mainly had to do with HMG (home media gallery). Could have been anything from a power surge, to corrupted data. It also doesn't appear to have bricked them, just corrupted the XMB OS, or kept them in an update feedback loop. I haven't heard from one person who redownloaded the update via a USB drive, formatted their HDD and tried it over. My guess is that would magicaly unbrick it. TornadoTJ 10-14-09, 09:07 AM Thanks Tornado. Would you be able to provide details on how I could check this option / setting to see what it is currently set on? It's in the game settings. I don't recall the exact steps to take, it won't be hard to figure it out. It's Options or something like that. hdtv47lg70 10-14-09, 09:45 AM PS3 Slim with 3.01 (the Slim is the only one that can bitstream). No firmware updates to my SC-07. Not sure on the manufacturers date, but I believe there was only one firmware update, and it mainly had to do with HMG (home media gallery). even more interesting. there have been several firmware updates for the sc-05 according to tech support but they dont readily publish them according to the tech guy.. but i would think that a later manufacturer date would of course have different firmware... the tech guy said they only update them if there is an issue and several members from the vsx threads said they were having issues with handshakes and got theirs updated from pioneer.. i asked the tech guy several times until he was nauseated by my asking if he was sure it was the sc-05 that had available firmware updates.. another question.. on your slim did it come with 3.0 or 3.1 firmware or did you update it? ballen420 10-14-09, 10:05 AM As far as I know, the first firmware update was just released a couple months back, and mainly had to do with HMG. I haven't really kept up on it though, since everything I use it for has been functioning properly. I'll try to remember to check my MFG date when I get home - I bought it around April, but that doesn't mean much. I do remember bitstreaming initially not working for me, but it straightened itself out. I can't remember what I did - I vaguely remember cycling through the multi-channel inputs. My Slim didn't come with 3.0 - came with 2.8 something, and I was forced to update it once I connected to the internet. hdtv47lg70 10-14-09, 10:08 AM As far as I know, the first firmware update was just released a couple months back, and mainly had to do with HMG. Thanks for sharing the opinion. Vortex3D 10-14-09, 04:00 PM Assuming reformatting the PS3 hard drive and reinstalling the firmware though USB flash storage will solve it, it probably only works with the revisions of PS3 that have part of the firmware stored on the hard drive. Earlier models of PS3, 20GB, 60GB, 80GB and first version of 40GB have the firmware stored entirely in the flash chip on the PS3. Only with 2nd revision of 40GB (when the hard drive positioning changed), the firmware is partly stored on the hard drive. If the hard drive is replaced or reformatted, PS3 will ask you to reinstall the firmware. Vizion47 10-14-09, 04:08 PM Apparently 3.10 was confirmed by a Naughty Dog Developer, but quickly removed. "I think they wanted people to have fun and ejoy the show since all dead players can talk to each other no matter what team you are on. But I will suggest it anyway. Not to mention that the next PS3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat. So if players use that instead of in game communication then they would also be able to communicate enemies positions."
