View Full Version : False Wall - do I need to drywall?

OK I am looking for what I think is pretty simple advice.

My screen wall has a ledge coming out that is about 45 inches high and goes all the way down to the floor. Above that is a window. So my plan is to cover the window completely (plywood, blackout curtain etc. Then just build a false that is flush with the ledge and have a space to the backwall when it is over the ledge.

Makes sense?

Now the false wall will have a few studs in the middle (I guess I could possibly eliminate this depending on your answers below.

So here is my question. Do I need to dry-wall that false wall? I was simply planning on putting the screen right on top of it and then have the speakers inside "towers" and finally dress any areas outside of the screen in black cloth (acoustical over the speakers).

Now the concern is if I do run studs behind the screen will they "shine through"? Should I paint them black, not paint them or "idiot don't put the studs behind the screen"

Appreciate any advice - planning on putting that up this week :)

The answer will depend on couple things.

1st of all can you post some pics so we can see exactly what you have.

2nd are you planning to do an AT screen. Are you buying or DIY'ing.

3rd do you plan to showcase your speakers behind your screen if you are doing AT, if not you can add a black backing either speaker cloth, GOM, or the same screen material but in black to help block anything that might show thru in bright scenes.

Either way yes you should paint all your studs on the false black and no you shouldn't have to do sheetrock.

Do a search for the minimalist screen/false wall approach.

Edit: found the thread.

I consider my own false wall very minimal. It is a 1/3 lower section which the screen sits on and is clamped to the soffit above and the wall below. I am in the process of adding fabric panels to cover the framing, take a peek at the build thread below.

1. Will have to do the pictures tonight / tomorrow - I have a drawing, but can't figure out how to attach things here (amazing after like 6 years on this site)

2. No AT screen - the speakers will be in "towers" next to the screen that will be covered with acoustical cloth GOM or similiar

So no drywall needed - good

So no issue with some studs behind the screen as long as they are painted black and the screen is obviously not "pushed" against those studs.

EDIT: Figured out photobucket, but not how to paste an image straight in here.

Thanks!

Thanks big mouth - not sure why it didn't work for me.

I then went and did a quote from yours - removed the quote parts and it worked........... oh well

OK so no issues with the studs behind either way right? (didn't really think the "drawing" would add anything in value)

Based on Oman's reply I am going to put a plywood over the window (blinds in the window so won't be seen from the outside) paint the whole front wall black, put up the frame around it painted black and voila a wall to put my screen on

when you are in Photobook simply copy and paste the last of the 4 links shown for each picture into the body of your text.
