View Full Version : Diffusion for uneven wall compensation?

I imagine I'm not the first person to run into this issue: I have a relatively small room (15.5 x 17-20) with an irregular back wall. The When sitting in the main listening position (end of couch, lovesac side) there seems to be issues with side/rear imaging on the left side. I have a feeling its due to the closet that is sticking out.

I was thinking about putting a diffusor (6") on the closet door. This is NOT the first reflection point for the main listening position. However, Im thinking it would direct some sound from that direction, where there is a gap in the soundstage now. (Side speakers are dipole)

The closet door is about 3.5 feet behind the couch, and would be about 7 feet from the main listening position.

Would this be effective? If so, if I put another diffusor on the other door as well, would that help the room, or undo any good im doing on the closet side?

BTW, I am going to put a 1x2ft absorption by the rear left speaker due to the wall being right next to it, i know thats not helping matters either.

Thanks.

A "stepped" rear wall like that often helps more than it hurts. Do you have any other treatment in the room yet? If not, start with corner bass traps and good absorbers at all the normal reflection points. I'm sure that will help a lot.

The bottom 4 ft of the wall (the black portion) is 1" linacoustic (on top of studs/r13 insulation -- no drywall on bottom). The whole front wall is similar, with 2" linacoustic. There are 4" 703 bass traps floor to ceiling in the front. Behind the curtains, the windows are covered with plywood which is covered with 1" linacoustic as well.

The plan is for some more absorption on the back wall and some tricorners in the back of the room/ceiling corners.

I guess my real question is whether or not a diffusor changes the reflection angle from the wall enough to project sound from a place where i otherwise wouldnt be hearing any reflections.
