Hello -

I have the popular buffalo DVD/Media player combo, I run it off my ReadyNas.
I have a ton of WMV videos now which when attempting to play, show a WMV7 or "WMV8 codec not supported" message on the screen. I will not recode these things and im ready for a new player anyway.

My question is:
In the comparison chart at the top of this forum, many of the players show that WMV is supported; how do I know which codecs they support?
My Buffalo supports WMV but obviously not WMV7 or 8 (and likely 9).

I have also heard that the WMV9 codec is not downwardly compatable with 8 etc. Any ideas which will play WMV7/8/9?

Thanks!

Ok might as well get the new 200 popcorn thing, can anyone confirm they have played wmv8 content on it.

As far as I know, nothing before WMV-9 is supported by any media extender due to the fact that older WMV codecs are not built into the hardware decoders though some media encoding hardware packages will encode WMV 7/8 files through software encoding. The portable media players have supported older WMV codecs in the past though I don't think that is the case anymore since they switched over to hardware decoders instead of relying on CPU/software packages.
