I have several WAV files which are too large to fit on a CD. Is there any way of burning them to a DVD+R which can then be played on a regular DVD/CD player (Pioneer DV-05)?

DVD-Video supports PCM 2-ch audio up to 24/96 resolution. You do have to author some type of video, but it can be black screen or still images. Most DVD authoring programs have some sort of way to accomplish this. Often called slide shows. Other DVD authoring tools let you just make a black screen. Individual songs can be authored as chapters on the DVD with navigation menus and the like.

Obviously it can only play in a DVD player. Some DVD or Bd players also support playback of audio files on disc or USB sticks, formats vary.

This great little powerful application is a mainstay for me. It creates "audio only" DVD-video discs by a simple drag-n-drop function. Check it out.

Also, any audio used for DVD must have a 48KHz sampling rate. The WAV files that the OP wants to put on DVD may have another sampling rate (i.e. 44.1KHz), and they will need to be re-sampled to 48KHz prior to DVD authoring.
