I want to re-do my gameroom as a home theater. Being extra poor I don't have a lot of $ but I do have some skills. Would I get an appreciable reduction in noise by using GG and putting another layer of sheetrock on the existing wall? Or would it be a waste of time because I did nothing to decouple the wall? Three of the walls go directly outside, only one wall is back to back with another room. I'm not looking for dead quiet, but I do want to appreciably reduce the noise. Also, the game room is directly over the garage. When someone opens or closes the garage door it sounds like it is going to shake the house apart, it is loud!!!! Does anybody have any advice on how to isolate the garage door opener motor from the floor joist a little better?

FF, I'd do the DD and GG where you think it will help. The trouble and expense will be minimal, and you'll get whatever increased sound reduction you'll get. Sure, it won't have as much impact as if you pulled off the existing drywall, did some decoupling, and then did 2 new sheets with GG...but that would also be a LOT more trouble and expense than it sounds like you care to do. Something's better than nothing, right?

By "reducing noise," I'm assuming you mean reducing the noise you can hear outside of the theater = isolation.

The others have mentioned some of the methods.

It really all boils down to how much work you want to do and how much money you want to spend.

Ted White often posts here and is quite helpful.

I am looking at reducing the sound transmission from outside and to outside. So I think doing the extra sheet plus GG might work well enough for me. Thanks for all the advice!
