View Full Version : Chocolat *one of the worst transfers*

A friend let me borrow and think goodness I didn't buy. It appears to be a 1080i transfer (could someone confirm?) that is loaded with EE and other artifacts (not DNR though). The colors are mushy and full of compression speckles. The resolution looks to be just above a DVD with a milky contrast. The audio is lossless (DTS-MA from Disney). However there is little to no surrounds (likely this is original since it an independent production) even during the metaphor "wind" scenes.

Then explain this. Is IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0241303/) wrong also?

Just noticed some strange inconsistencies. Don't see the BD listed on Miramax's site although Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Chocolat-Blu-Ray-Blu-ray-Johnny-Depp/dp/B0020TS5KQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1252234091&sr=8-5) has it. Also looking at the back cover it has a couple of typos and appears to be a Canadian release. It has the region listed as 1 and calls it a DVD.

William, I haven't seen the BD of this movie, but the screenshot you provided of the back of the case answers your first question.

Appears to be yet another Alliance release of an HDTV transfer. Unfortunate, but if the studios would get off their asses and release some catalog titles, this wouldn't be happening.

Crap transfer? On an Alliance release? I am shocked...

So Alliance is notorious for using 1080i TV master's of films to make BD's?

I don't get it. What's the pun?

It's reference to "I Love You Man." The characters have a discussion about "Chocolat".

Only 1.5 months late... Some screencaps. There's plenty of diffusion in this movie; I'm not sure how much better it could look?

Darn good movie. Very enjoyable, if a bit quirky. 1080i transfer can be just fine, if given the bandwidth to breath. Many 1080p BD's are inferior to their 1080i broadcast counterparts (Gladiator, anyone?) so it's never completely one way or the other.

It was not ususal for Disney and Miramax would did this job but it was happened,so did FOX for The Girl Next Door.

This is very disappointing. I would love to have this film on BD. Any chance we will ever see this title get the proper treatment? If not, I guess I'll just stick with my DVD copy.

There was a thread a while back discussing the Canadian Alliance releases, and yes... it is terrible. Sadly I bought it to find that out. That and the Blade trilogy.

I spent 5 minutes, but could not even begin to parse what this sentence is trying to convey.

Doesn't look horrible at all. Not great but far from bad. From the thread title I thought we were going to see a horror show like Gladiator or The Girl Next Door.

Ok, admittedly it's not a steaming pile of poo, but it is pretty bad ;) Now what they did to Blade... they deserve to hang for that.

Has anyone compared the new Lionsgate US release to the Alliance release? I have the Alliance release and the bIt rate averages in the teens. A review of the Lionsgate release over on the HT forum site says that the average bit rate is in the mid 30's.

Thanks,
Tom
