These are questions about the design aspect. I know I could do what I think looks best, or what I think sounds best, but I am asking for the general rule of thumb when it comes to these things from a design point of view. I started re-doing my theater room last December and still haven't finished yet. Most of the time I go in there and stare at the walls for awhile and then close the door and leave. I don't know how to go about what I am trying to do here and what will look right. Here is a description of the room:
The room is 14' long by 9' wide where the screen goes. I have a ledge running around the room about a foot down from the ceiling that will hold indirect lighting. There will be 2 columns on each side of the room evenly spaced. Along the bottom and near the middle of the wall is matching boards that will have vertical boards connecting them to create little panels that will be covered in fabric. I have guessed I will either paint the top 2/3 of the wall or make bigger panels to cover that, not sure yet. The front of the room has 2 cabinets flanking the screen with low cabinets in between that the center will rest on and all electronics. They are tall and about 16" deep. Hopefully this makes sense because I don't have a way to draw this out on here for a better visual.
So this is easy enough right? The problem I am having is do I measure from the corners of the room and divide by 3 to get the columns going about 4'8" on center, or should I measure from the front of the cabinets since you aren't going to see the wall along the cabinet sides anyway. If I go from the front of the cabinets I think it would seem more symmetrical, but that seems wrong. Also, what is the general rule of thumb for the chair rail type board along the middle of the room? A 3rd of the way up the wall is what I have found is the usual, but that puts the tweeters on the front towers above it and they will reflect off the wall if I choose not to cover the top part in fabric too. If I go higher which I did at first then it looks wrong. Hopefully this link works. This room is similar to what I have except for my chair rail with panels on the lower part of the wall, and it looks like they go equal distance from the front of the cabinets and not the front wall where the screen is. So what do you guys suggest? http://www.hometheaterdesignmag.com/prointeriors/120208game/
Ok, the picture didn't work, here is a link: http://www.hometheaterdesignmag.com/prointeriors/120208game/
