View Full Version : Would you be happy if all Blu Rays had picture quality as good as Gladiator?

There have been a lot of comments about the Gladiator Blu Ray. Some people are quite content with the picture quality, others aren't. So I was wondering if the "this is good enough/not good enough" viewpoint can essentially be extended to all releases. Personally, I don't consider it a quality release worthy of purchase, and I would not be happy if other releases had this level of picture quality.

if every movie looked worse than its HDTV counterpart, i'd save my money and download HDTV rips

You accidentally added "good" into the main title of the thread and also you forgot to add the third option which is "I will be happy if all releases looked like Gladiator as long as the price was $7"

I mention the last part because thats important and why many seem to be buying and i really wanted to know if people would sacrifice quality just because something is cheaper.

and I keep reading about this whole, "Well, it's ONLY $8.00...

Well, that's ONLY if you buy Braveheart AND Gladiator. Say you didn't want to? And that's if you still have the old DVD for the $10 rebate. Say you didn't...? And next week that deal will be over at BB. At amazon this is $22.99 plus tax. (if you live in NYS)

Although I answered no, does the question also mean that all catalogue titles need to be remastered before being released on Blu-ray? Because that is the only way you will get the best possible picture quality.

Nothing like loading a poll to get a desired answer IMHO.

Who is gonna answer yes?

Ask why so many buy them regardless then. There are much more catalog tiltes that aren't reaching the quality the format is capable than are.

I would say that if using an old master results in an inferior picture by Blu Ray standards, then yes, it should be remastered.

Some movies look pretty solid even though they don't appear to be state-of-the-art perfect transfers. But if the available materials are in this shoddy of a state, re-working the master just seems like good QC practice.

It's a bogus question. Every film is different, every person as different taste and priorities.

I might accept movie "X" at one level of quality, but not accept movie "Y" at the same.

There is enough debate already in many other threads on this topic or a variation to the topic.
