I have had the Philips DVP5982 for about 2 years, and tonight I started having a problem with it. When I turned it on the screen was scrolling like a VCR set to one channel playing on another channel or an over the air signal not coming in. The screen was also in grayscale.

I checked the connections and swapped out the cables and tried a different disk, and I moved the DVD player to another TV to confirm that it is the player. I found a firmware update and performed that, but it is still doing the same thing. It wasn’t too expensive, but I would hate to junk it if it is something I can fix.

Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with that model, but what you describe sounds like what happens when a player is switched between NTSC (60hz) or PAL (50hz) output when the display is expecting the other. Does your player or display have a setting for that?

Good question. I will have to check that. I should also mention that it is hooked up via RCA cables to a CRT TV.
