La Boîte numérique proves that they can encode do a crappy AVC encode without boosting the brightness. The Spanish encode has plenty of artifacts of its own, mind you.

The open-matte varies from just removing the matte bars to a bit of side-cropping in addition to the increased vertical image.

From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City, Freddy vs. Jason, Nightmare on Elm Street... ok, the last one isn't fantastic, but it was a decent effort.
