Netflix is joining in the 70th anniversary celebrations of The Wizard of Oz. Warner Bros.' classic musical will be available for streaming for free through Netflix on Oct. 3 for 24 hours starting at 9am.

Through Netflix's Instant Watch service, The Wizard of Oz will be available to anyone online via a computer—including consumers who aren't Netflix subscribers. Only subscribers, however, will be able to stream the movie through the various set-tops that stream Netflix's service to TVs, including Blu-ray Disc players, Roku's player, TiVo digital video recorders and Microsoft's Xbox Live.

"Making a movie of this stature available for free over the Internet on an uninterrupted basis is a first," Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, said in a statement. "At the same time, it's a great opportunity for people to get a taste of what instantly watching movies streamed from Netflix is all about. We're thrilled to be able to do this on both scores."

Netflix is adding to the celebratory events by hosting a free concert and movie screening on Sept. 29 in New York's Central Park. Jennifer Hudson and Julianne Hough will perform songs from the movie.

The partnership between Netflix and Warner comes after the studio said last month that it would begin selling its titles directly to the kiosk channel and the mail-order subscription channel, which Netflix dominates.
