View Full Version : Building new dedicated Home Theater... advice, please
lawdog2k 09-08-09, 03:50 PM Well, I have been a member on here for a long time, but haven't been on in a while. I know the knowledge here is astounding, so, I figured here is where I would go for some answers.... or pointers as it were.
My wife and I are finally adding on to the house (if all goes as planned). With two relatively new kids, a reeling econony, and questionable future...we decided to add on to what we got than build new on our other property. The builder we are using knows (or at least seems to know) about staggering studs, absorbtion panels, different sheetrock, a/c concerns, and other stuff he threw out during our conversation, but you guys DO know. So, here's the rough ideas.
Overall, the room (unless I need to change it) will have an average of 8' ceiling, 15'6" (average) wide by 23' feet long. I say an average of 8' because we intend on making the ceiling "drop" to match the floor risers. Each row of risers (two total) will have 8' of headroom. Also, I am thinking of having the room either narrow or widen from one end to the other, like in an amphitheater (maybe 16' on back to 15' in front or vice-versa). I went on line and scoped out some of the "insert fancy name" diagram for the standing waves. Am I anywhere in the ball park?
I have the stuff I have been buying along the way for such an event. I have the three rotel Amps (two 1070's and one 1080), the Integra DTc 9.8 Processor, and a 10 year old Miller and Kreisel V1250-THX Subwoofer. I also have my B&W speakers (two DM604S3's, two DM601S3's, and one LCR600S3).
I will need to get a rear projector, a screen, seating, and potentially new speakers and an additional amp or two. Heck, I may need a new sub or two....of course, I wanna big ol plasma on the wall when the screen is up. I know I will need more stuff.
This room will be used primarily for movies, but I will also be using it for my childish love of Xbox 360 Live. Gotta play me some Call of Duty with my friends.
So, I will throw out some questions....
2. What dimensions should I try to stick with?
3. Equipment good enough? Should I keep what I currently have in the living room and buy all new for the theater? (I would rather spend the money on other things, if possible and use the equipment I have been buying in the theater room.)
a. Speakers? in walls- Maybe B&W CWM800; additional B&W DM601S3 to match what I have; or some B&W D63 DiPoles.
b. more amps? Rotel to match what I have.
c. more/different subs? looking at two pair of 15" in IB array in ceiling.
d. positioning?
4. Projector? Looking at JVC DILA 750 ( a little pricey, though).
5. Screen? light not an issue in this room, would prefer acoustically transparent for speakers behind screen and a size around 110"-120"
7. Seating? Finding decent sets online for about $2400-$3800 for row of 4 powered reclining.
8. I am sure there will be more......(like, anyone play video games on a projector and screen? say 110" or so?)
Well, we look to try and do this this year, so...(with the stuff I wanna buy for the kitchen, please keep it realistic....I'm not gonna buy a cinecurve with a Runco DLP.) , I wish I could. I am gonna do this, I just need some pointers (read instructions). P.S. A friend of mine's wife is saving absorption and other sound panels she is getting on the job (she's an architecht) and keeping them for me.
Here are some pics of plans and ideas so far...

dc_pilgrim 09-08-09, 04:04 PM Work out your build issues first. Then work on you equipment issues. Don't buy the PJ until the end.
Can you post plans with a broader perspective? I am curious about the flow of the space, and specifically - what is up with the two doors on the screenwall. I think that is a distracting look, and a sound isolation flanking path potentially. Also may become a limiting factor in speaker placement, screen choices, upgrade path, etc.
EDIT - I looked a little closer - is that some kind of equipment space behind the screen?
Also, not a fan of the descending ceiling.
BIGmouthinDC 09-08-09, 04:10 PM Looks like you have a great project in mind.
My initial reactions:
Have you considered a 2.35 screen? for AT consider SMX or Seymour AV
You should read about false front walls because I think your front end can have a much better design without those two doors, Right now it has no WOW factor and limits what you can do with the space.
A space this great should have a stage for looks.
Equipment rack?
Verify seating distances riser heights with the interactive formulas in the sticky thread, I can't tell your riser sizing and seating distances by looking at the drawing. but the first row looks really close.
I'm partial to a sit at bar for the last row seating it gives you more flexibility for the space and creates a standing room area at the rear for really big gatherings.
I think the ceiling can be much better designed with a marquee over the screen and soffits around the perimeter with up lights in cornice molding. Maybe a star ceiling. All this instead of the step down design.
You should read the Big Red build thread, there are a lot of similarities.
I don't like the doors on the screen wall nor the step down ceiling. Actually I really, really dislike the step down ceiling. Just seems like a waste of space and will make the room feel much smaller when you generally want the room to feel larger when you have a riser.
BIGmouthinDC 09-08-09, 04:58 PM A WOW factor front end design

ScruffyHT 09-08-09, 06:15 PM What are those doors at the front for ?
+1 for the false wall with a AT screen ... and then 2 rows of seats with a standup bar
look in the powerbuys for deals on seating ... you will pay far less than what you have seen so far
dont worry about equiptment just yet till you figure out where seats/screen etc will go
and I also am not a fan of the stepped ceiling
kjlewie 09-08-09, 06:46 PM It looks like you could potentially have a much larger screen without those doors.
Where is your equipment going to be placed?
I 2nd designing and building the room first, then decide on a pj. The choices will get increase over time. And, if the pj you want today is still your choice near the end of your build, it will likely be cheaper.
Good luck.
lawdog2k 09-08-09, 07:40 PM Thank you for such quick responses. Like I said, I am totally in the pre-build idea phase so I am looking for input.
The space at the end of the theater is an equipment room which is roughly 4' by 16' with door(s) to access the room (was thinking pocket doors). Of course, the door(s) would not be such a contrasting color or material. The overall room is 28' long x 16' wide, then a wall is put in to make the equipment room breaking up the dimensions. If I build a false wall, I will still need access to the space behind it. How would I do that, with some type of removable panels?
The risers are 6" and they are (from the back wall) 8', then 7', then it is 8'8" to the forward wall, then the equipment room. I had figured the first row of seating would be placed where the head of an individual would be about 13'6" from the screen. I was intending on putting all the equipment (amps, pre-amp, satellite, dvd, xbox, PS3, power conditioners, battery backups, and all my DVD's) in the equipment room. I was also intending on using the AT screen so my center channel could be behind the screen, with the mains out in the open.
I will be checking out the other threads mentioned. Input is good for me.

Why not put the equiptment at the back of the room as you wont need to waste that much space on equiptment anyway... you can then enter a lobby and then enter the theater ;)
TheSkinsFan 09-08-09, 08:30 PM * How about some sort of smaller hidden doors to the right and/or left of the screen instead of real doors?
* Less space behind the screen and bring the equipment to the rear of the room in a framed floating rack on the wall? Why would you want to hide all your kickass equipment?
* +1 for the bar behind the seating. I plan to do the same with mine.
* I'm not a fan of the step-down ceiling either. With only two 6" risers and 9' to work with, why not just make your entire ceiling at the same height? Perhaps install a large indent in the ceiling for fiber optic stars/molding/etc...?
Man I wish I could dedicate such a large space to my own designs...
Don't forget to HAVE FUN! :D
BIGmouthinDC 09-08-09, 09:12 PM On the sides of the screen you make hinged fabric covered panels. to access an equipment rack and a walk behind on the other side.
Use the same fabric above and below the screen. GOM FR701 in black. It is fire resistant acoustically transparent and what is around my screen and a lot of other theaters documented here.

I am planning on doing the same for my yet to be started theater. The lobby should also help as a sound buffer between the theater and the rest of the house.
lawdog2k 09-10-09, 01:41 PM Ok, I took your guys advice and have designed a different plan for your opinion. I am tending to sway this way now and have drawn one up in sketchup. There is now a false wall allowing a 144" screen...could be smaller. Also, the rear now houses a 4'x9' equipment room with the equipment in a cabinet. The other side of the space is used as a 4'x7' lobby for ingress and egress through a pocket door. Here it is.... any ideas?

lawdog2k 06-09-10, 02:56 PM Well, the builders have been busy building my stuff. The room will be 23' long and the width will go from 15'8" to 14'* rear to front. The ceiling will be 10' with a 9' furdown. the rear seating deck goes form the exterior wall through the equipment room/entry to the front of the rear seating area. It is 1' tall and filled with sand and green glued together. The equipment room in the back of the theater will be 4'x7' and vented. all the new runs of anything will be homerun into that room. the other side of the back will be an entry with a pocket door into the theater. The walls and the ceiling will be double layer sheet rocked with perpendicular layers green glued.
I am probably getting an Epson Powerlite Pro 9500 UB and a 110" Carada screen.
here's some pics.
Getting there.
here some pictures.

lawdog2k 06-24-10, 01:13 PM Well, I changed my mind on the riser. Instead of filling with sand, I'm using auralex uboats to isolate the riser from the floor and spacing it an inch from the walls. I'm placing plastic barrier in the bottom and then filling it with r30 acoustic batting. I am gonna cut some holes in the top of the riser and use it as a bass trap. I have read where this has been done before and was attempting to use dome of my contruction loan to head off the additional cost of bass trap risers in the corners.
new stuff....Mid Atlantic rack. Sorry for the phone pics. And, like I said...this thing is tall. had 1/4" between it and top of door jamb.
The guys did the u-boats on the riser and I had the builder tell them to do a little modification. They had put the u boats under like they were supposed to, but misunderstood when I said narrow the riser and have it not touch the walls. They narrowed it and then used uboats to connect it to the wall and nailed (even thought there was a 1/2" gap) it to the studs without uboats. They are now removing the side and rear wall uboats and the nails and anchoring the riser to the ground using L anchors with uboats.
Today, they should be doing the furring to bring the wall into narrow the room 1' from rear to front. cutting hole for window in kitchen addition. fixing the riser and building the wall between the equipment room and the theater. They took out the original one to redo the riser with the uboats the first time.
builder got the insulation for the riser yesterday. and is ordering the green glue and silenseal for the room today.
I am having to have my electrical service increased for the addition and several separate dedicated 20 amp services ran to the equipment room.

Ted White 06-24-10, 01:23 PM I'm sure you've considered this, but will you have speakers / subs resting on this stage? That's the reason for the sand. Risers that are farther away from the mains are generally filled with fiberglass.
Did you have a hole drill size / pattern for the bass trap?

The riser is in the rear for seating. I haven't broached the subject of a stage yet with builder, but it will b filled with sand. I have not figured out dimension or number or placement of holes to be drilled and or cut in riser. I will need to have some audio tests done when I have everything hooked up and running. I'm just building the riser with future designs in mind.
Ted White 06-24-10, 01:47 PM My apologies... You wrote "riser" amd I read "stage"
lawdog2k 07-03-10, 08:08 AM Here's some updated pics. The riser was extended 1'. The furrdowns studded. The furred right wall studded. The wing walls studded. Low voltage and regular wiring ran. Sheetrock to go next week. The a/c guys coming Monday.
Sorry for the phone pics by area light.

Can't wait to see it when it's done (my "theater" is tiny, so i have to live vicariously through anonymous people online! :))
lawdog2k 07-04-10, 06:27 PM Been a long time coming. I can't wait for it to be done either. Been vicariously living through others threads on here for a good while.
lawdog2k 07-12-10, 08:30 PM Got some new stuff today. One was damaged, but a new one is already o it's way.
Berkline 13175. Two rows of four in chocolate brown. Power recline. Another month I'll be using em.
Here's a progress pic... They're redoing the stage. It's not solid in the front and no where near completely filled with sand.
I didn't see it in the thread, but are you doing anything for sound isolation?
lawdog2k 07-13-10, 04:11 PM Yes. The room only has one interior wall connecting to the house. This wall is furred out in a narrowing fashion to make the front of the room 1' narrower than the rear. This furred wall is not connecting to the wall next to it-the wall for the next adjacent room( two 4x8 closets).
The rear of the room is adjoining a closed door 4'x8' entry way- kind of a large communicating door scenario. The door to the theater room itself is going to be a solid door.
The riser is built on 16" centers and is filled with acoustic insulation. The riser is built using auralex uboats and does not contact the walls. The top of the riser is 1" tongue an groove plywood screwed and glued.
The stage is going to be completely filled with sand.
The walls and ceiling will be double 5/8" Sheetrock green glued together. There are no recessed lights going in the room- fluorescents and rope in the center ceiling, sconces, and two 4' track lights.
The a/c is ran through double lined flex duct in some very convoluted, but freely flowing directions.
This is about all I was thinking about doing.
Doesn't sound like a lot compared to what others had done, but I feel it will be good for my layout. The theater room is on the end of a long add on. The closets adjoining the room are in a 20' perpendicularly orientated office to the theater. Then there is a toy 14'x18 toyroom. There is alot of house between the theater and the living quarters.
lawdog2k 07-15-10, 05:59 PM So, I have come to the conclusion pocket doors aren't for theater rooms. So, should I run with a solid exterior door or something else. I don't think I really need to spend the money on a "soundproof" door. Ideas?
Ted White 07-16-10, 09:53 AM Pocket doors and isolated rooms are mutually exclusive. You want a very heavy door, such as a 1 3/4" solid core slab and then seal it. The sealing (especially on the door bottom) is best done with a specialized acoustic seal.
lawdog2k 07-16-10, 10:32 AM Yeah. Figured that out when I saw the door- and several websites. The gist is the best way to seal a pocket door is to change the door. ;)
So, any pointers to places to buy acoustic seals for my door. I am looking to do an automatic drop seal and a short threshold for it to seal against. The threshold can be placed before carpeting or after. I will need one or the other. Links appreciated.
lawdog2k 07-16-10, 12:35 PM So, I have them removing the pocket door and putting in a solid slab 1 3/4" door with full threshold. I just ordered this kit....should do all right.... http://www.asistorefront.com/p-222-soundproof-door-kit-heavy-duty.aspx
Here is the low down on the kits parts... says a STC of 43 when used with a threshold.

lawdog2k 07-19-10, 10:41 AM New update.... with pics. I went and purchased a JVC RS25 and a Studiotek 130G3 in 120" 16:9. So, the builder said they are supposed to be doing sheet rock and paint this week (all paint sherwin williams). The front of the room behind wing wall and the soffit will be painted flat Tri Corn black. The room will have a chair rail (stained to match the rest of house) going around and above it the walls will be painted Matte (mixed in Duration) Stolen Kiss Red, below will be Coconut Husk-also matte mixed in Duration. The front of the wing walls will be solid Stolen Kiss. The inset ceiling will be painted flat blue plate and a friend of mine will be painting a Day Scene akin to the venetian waterway in Vegas... like this

And then in a couple of weeks, I'm getting Jeff from Night Sky Murals to come down from Utah to paint the night sky on it like this....

lawdog2k 07-19-10, 10:07 PM One more pic from today. The insulation guy installed some vinyl sound barrier today on the wall bordering the rest of the living spaces. It has an STC rating of 27.
Here's a link to what he installed. http://www.acousticalsolutions.com/audioseal-sound-barrier
Ted White 07-19-10, 10:34 PM The insulation guy installed some vinyl sound barrier today on the wall bordering the rest of the living spaces. It has an STC rating of 27.
Eek. That's a misleading piece of information. In reality, the STC of a single piece of material is irrelevant. It is the complete system incorporating all materials that is relevant.
For example, it is sometimes purported and assumed that adding MLV to a wall will add 27 STC points. This is not the case at all. STC is a logarithmic metric, and as such cannot be summed in that fashion. Adding a sheet of 1/8" 1 Lb. MLV typically adds 3-4 points to an assembly, assuming proper installation. It's only mass, after all.
lawdog2k 07-19-10, 11:23 PM Well, I got a bunch of other crap going together on that wall. A bunch of lined insulation, and the 2x 5/8" rock green glued on a furred out wall. It can't hurt, right? ;)
So, what your saying is... The individual stickers I put on my car doesn't give me extra horsepower? It's the cumulative affect of them combined? :)
lawdog2k 07-21-10, 06:02 PM They're hanging rock today. They are working on second layer of 5/8". Man, that glue is messy. They were a little shocked when u said three tubes per sheet.
The sheetrocking tried to talk me into soundboard and Sheetrock because it'll block more sound. I printed out the study and graphs from greenglues website and said nope.
I'll post sone pics in a bit.
lawdog2k 07-21-10, 06:34 PM If I spoke Spanish, I would understand jut how much these guys hate me for this.
lawdog2k 07-21-10, 08:17 PM Here's some pics. Office, closets in office, equipment room, and them doing second layer of 5/8".
They haven't cut the hole for the equipment rack yet. It is going in the room pictured with the electrical boxes.
lawdog2k 07-21-10, 10:14 PM Finished second layer of 5/8".
Front of room with stage and wing walls.
Back of room with riser. Entry on left. Rack space on right.
Equipment closet.
Comparison of 1/2 and two layers of 5/8" with green glue.
You know what? That stuff is gooey. When their website says it's messy, they ain't messing around. It is.
Tomorrow they'll go over the second layer with silenseal just like they did the first. Then tape and float everything. They aim to be painting by Saturday or Monday at the latest.
If I spoke Spanish, I would understand jut how much these guys hate me for this.
I can really relate to this. I'm having guys sheetrock the whole basement but had them do the theater first. Big mistake. They did a great job (and the main guy is fantastic) but basically after the green glue experience (we did the speedloader which I'm guessing is a little messier than the tubes) of the theater they were so traumatized that none of the crew would come back. Had to wait 2 months for them to find a new crew to do the rest of the basement (which they're just finishing up now).
It's amazing how sticky the stuff is even after a couple of months of "drying".
lawdog2k 07-26-10, 11:57 PM So, they put the first coat of blue plate blue and flat black down and will do second coat tomorrow morning after they put plates on the junction boxes. My buddy will be doing the "sky" tomorrow night. May take him a couple days to do in the evening.
In case you had doubts as to his skill.... My boy is pretty amazing! He shot a couple pics of his living room and sent them to me because I wanted to show him off. And, no, he does not live in a log cabin. Look closely and you will see the walls are actually Sheetrock.
lawdog2k 07-28-10, 02:51 PM I should be getting the ceiling painted "sky" done tonight... or at least a good portion of it completed. I will post up pics tonight of the progress.
Today, the builder is putting in doors, pulling a couple more wires we forgot about, and getting ready for paint in the rest of the room and the rest of the addition.
I have decided to not do columns in the theater room, as I believe they would impede traffic flow near the seats and steps. So, we are doing a wide chair rail in the back and down the sides, which will be stained to match the rest of the wood in the house. I am planning on acoustic treatments to be installed after everything done and I get some reputable dude(ette) to come and scope and mike it.
I got my RS35 in yesterday. It was ISF'd by AVS and the printout looks very good. I like straight lines overlaying the "perfect" lines. I am just itching to put in all this stuff sitting around the house.
lawdog2k 07-28-10, 10:18 PM Here's what it looks like tonight. Still need to do highlights and shadowing. Still some more to do tomorrow. What y'all think so far?
Of course, this is iphone quality pics.
mayhem13 07-28-10, 11:44 PM Amazing work!
BIGmouthinDC 07-29-10, 08:27 AM That dude has a skill.
lawdog2k 07-29-10, 05:16 PM I posted this over in the Audio area, too... but
I am asking because I searched and found older threads which will not include the newer breed or evolutions of manufacturers subs.
So, I am looking to replace a sub I have been more than happy with. I am intending on seeing how it does in the room when done, but am keeping options open. I currently have a M&K SB-1250TXH- (old link here (http://www.abt.com/product/36201/MK-Sound-SB1250THX.html)).
I have been looking at three different manufacturers (well, mostly two) and am torn. I am trying to keep the monetary hit under $2k if I do this. I would prefer to keep it closer to $1k, but we all know that's not gonna happen....
Here are the contenders....
Experience with each?
Comparison between them?
Pros?
Cons?

lawdog2k 07-29-10, 10:26 PM New pics. Now, just wait on jeff from nightskymurals to fly down from Utah to do his magic.
lawdog2k 07-29-10, 10:27 PM Couple more.
lawdog2k 08-05-10, 11:30 PM New pics. Paint mostly done and some brick done. Screen on way and jeff coming next Thursday/Friday to paint night sky.
Wow, things are looking great with your build! The ceiling is awesome:)
lawdog2k 08-06-10, 08:11 PM Ok. Today's progress. Looking down hallway, into new office, then into entryway into theater at equipment room. Then the room itself. It got some wood trim today. I put in the rack, shelves, and facing plates. Then I made an enclosure for the rack. No equipment in it yet because it's still being used in living room. Oh, and almost done with bricking, to boot. Should be finished in a week. Then hook up equipment, mount projector, then mount screen. Woo hoo.
lawdog2k 08-11-10, 11:06 AM Oh, and my buddy came by last night and painted a plane with a chem trail for me. It is a longtime running inside joke between a bunch of my family and friends. So, here it is. I will try to get pics up of the night sky as soon as I can. It will be painted tomorrow night, but I the builder has not put in the ridge or crown, therefore, none of the blacklights. I will stop at HD and see if I can find a plug in fluorescent I can throw some BL bulbs in for a quick pic.

HDvids4all 08-11-10, 12:15 PM This is really turning out great, I can't wait to see the night sky finished!!
It's too bad all your pictures aren't displayed like your last 2 of the ceiling...I can barely make out the attached images even when I click on them, so seeing any kind of detail is very difficult (hint hint). ;)

Instead of putting a whole bunch of huge pictures on here...here's the link to the album for this addition.... Most of the pics for my theater are taken with my phone. When done or time permits I will take some better pics with an actual camera and upload them...

premiertrussman 08-11-10, 01:12 PM I cant believe how much it looks like you have no ceiling and are looking out into a beautiful blue sky.
lawdog2k 08-18-10, 12:47 PM Some updated pics with an actual camera. its still kinda dark in there with just the two halogen work lamps, but I'll get better ones when done. Jeff from nightskymurals came down and painted the ceiling. it is REALLY hard to take pictures of it in pitch darkness to capture the actual scene you see. there are thousands of little twinklling stars on the ceiling. The darker pics I have posted was with two t-12 blacklight bulbs in a fixture sitting on the floor just to give you an idea. It is truly a sight to behold in real life. if you click on the pictures, it will take you to the picture on my webshots. You can view it full size there and more of the stars show up, but nothing like seeing it in real life.
They say the theater room will be done by the 25th. I told them I wanted it ready for my birthday...the 31st. I will be moving equipment in there this week/weekend. I will put up screen when the carpet is in there. I don't want to do it on the concrete floor or while they are still working in the room.

Stereodude 08-18-10, 01:20 PM That looks very cool!
NightSkyMurals 08-21-10, 02:59 AM Lawdog2k... Those pictures came out really nice, even though you really can't see all the stars that are actually there. I loved your room (though a little warm :-) and can't wait to see the finished pictures.
Your friend did an incredible job with that day-mural and you've done a great job with that room!
Thanks for having me out!
Jeff
Night Sky Murals
Maybe I missed it, I was wondering what brand and color of paint you used on the walls for your room. Looks nice. The ceiling is really amazing. I'm surprised it looks just as good as a night scene.
lawdog2k 08-21-10, 08:35 AM Jeff, being from California/Utah wasn't used to the Texas heat and humidity. I apologize for no a/c in the room while you were here. It seems the a/c guys didn't do their part in time.
Jeff did a great job and I would recommend him to anyone wanting his services. Cordial, courteous, and a delight to deal with. Thanks, again for your work.
The paints were posted a bit back, but I am more than happy to post em again. ;)
The paints are all sherwin Williams. The red is stolen kiss, matte mixed in duration. The brown is coconut husk, matte mixed in duration. The black is flat tri corn. The ceiling is flat blue plate. I can get ya numbers if ya want them.
I am hopeful the room will be ready by my birthday next weekend. The trim carpenter is bustin heinie. The network guy coming Monday to terminate and plate all cat6 and rg6 runs, install gigabit router and switch. The carpet is going in wed/Thursday. I'll put seats in right after carpet. I'll put equipment in hopefully Monday or Tuesday night, including speakers and projector. Then, I'll assemble screen and install it.
Again, hopefully can use it all by next weekend. ;)
Thanks go out to all who have followed, posted, and given me help along the way. I'll get some more pics up as the progress continues.
NightSkyMurals 08-21-10, 10:25 AM Lawdog2k.... No apology needed! I can't have a cool room every time, and when I do have one that's a little warm... it just makes me appreciate the ones that are cool. And the funny thing (ahem) is that after painting in your room I went to Atlanta and had another new construction job w/ no AC. Hopefully, a few of the extra pounds I carry were shed. :-)
And for anyone following this link, the pics of his room don't do it justice. The wall colors and dramatic day-sky on the ceiling create such a nice look and feel. Nice job!
Good luck finishing the room... and Happy Birthday!
FuzzyZipperbaum 08-21-10, 09:22 PM "The paints are all sherwin Williams. The red is stolen kiss, matte mixed in duration. The brown is coconut husk, matte mixed in duration. The black is flat tri corn. The ceiling is flat blue plate. I can get ya numbers if ya want them."
Law... Could you please post the numbers of the Black and the ceiling flat blue? THX
lawdog2k 08-22-10, 01:25 AM Sure heres the list:
The blue is blue plate, sw6796-flat
The black is Tricorn black, sw6258-flat
Red is Stolen kiss, sw7586- matte mixed in duration
Brown is Coconut husk, sw6111- matte mixed in duration.
The stain will be minwax early American number 230
Believe it or not, I was looking through a SW brochure on "reds" and they had a room painted using the "stolen kiss" color. I pointed it out to my wife and said I like that color. Your room has only reinforced my thinking, it looks great in your room.
lawdog2k 08-22-10, 07:25 PM Thank you. I wanted something not too dark, but not light. It is a great color. Were actually gonna use it on one of the walls in our kitchen.
Update:
A lot gonna (better) happen this week. Supposedly the builders av guy coming tomorrow to terminate all the network and rg6 he ran. Hes to Pull cables I specified fir projector. The builder asked about the equipment hook up and speaker termination. I said I'll do those. He asked why and I asked in return, you want me to be honest? I said so it's done the way I want and I know it's done right.
They're supposed to do silenseal on all crevices, boxes, ac, wall/floor joint, one more coat of paint in theater, stain, and build deadvent tomorrow. Tile going in too. Wood flooring in Wednesday and carpet Thursday. I'll put chairs in, install projector, and connect all speakers Thursday night. I'm prolly taking Friday off to make sure everything ready for the family to cone over Sunday for my birthday. I have a bunch of fingers crossed on thus schedule. ;)
acex008 08-23-10, 09:30 PM Great birthday present! Fingers crossed over here in Maine for you to finish on time!
lawdog2k 08-26-10, 09:12 PM Well, it wont be ready for the party. The carpet isn't coming in from the mill til Monday or Tuesday. So, no putting in seats or screen. They've done all the woodwork and have been staining like crazy. The network is all up an running and I have put all the equipment in the rack but have not pushed it all the way forward yet. I'll work on that tomorrow as I will be wiring the rack up while I burn a day of vacay.
Oh, and the tile is done in the hallway and only lacks grout. He's waking to do that until after party because it wouldn't be sealed yet.
The wood flooring in the office will be installed Saturday.
I'll put up some pics tomorrow.
NightSkyMurals 08-27-10, 03:01 AM Too bad! So the AC is hooked up? :-)
Happy Birthday!
lawdog2k 08-27-10, 07:56 AM Yep. Feels good. ;)
lawdog2k 08-27-10, 10:50 PM Fibbed bout pics. The wood floor is going in Wednesday or Thursday and carpet Friday. So, maybe this time next week I'll be able to watch something in there.
lawdog2k 08-31-10, 01:37 PM Supposedly I will have a complete theater room this weekend....We'll see.
But, I come with more questions....
I have the B&W DM604S3 and was wondering if I should leave them on the floor as intended by the manufacturer or if I should build some speaker stands for them to raise them. I was told...I don't remember by whom, I should raise them because of the split level seating with the riser. So, I come to you guys for advice, yet again.
If I do need to raise them, anyone got ideas, plans, or link to such info for stands for these speakers?
The riser is 13.5" tall and will have berkline 13175's. the front row will also be 13175's. The dimension of the speakers in questions are...
Dimensions Height: 994mm (39.1in)
Width: 236mm (9.3in)
Depth: 398mm (15.7in)
Net Weight 29.2kg / 64.2lb
lawdog2k 09-01-10, 05:17 PM Ideas?
Stereodude 09-01-10, 05:22 PM You want the tweeters to be close to ear level. If that means you need to lift them off the floor, then I would do that.
lawdog2k 09-01-10, 05:30 PM They should be at ear level for the front row sitting on the floor. should I be concerned about the back row, as well, or just take care of the front row and let the second row get what it gets?
NightSkyMurals 09-01-10, 08:09 PM Put your better friends up front. :-)

Brad Horstkotte 09-02-10, 10:18 AM They should be at ear level for the front row sitting on the floor. should I be concerned about the back row, as well, or just take care of the front row and let the second row get what it gets?
I think it would depend on your speakers' polar response / vertical dispersion - in most cases I think optimizing the front row would take care of the back row too. If upon listening you find that not to be the case, you could try mounting them slightly lower and tilting them back, so the line of fire is pointed towards both rows.
lawdog2k 09-02-10, 11:21 AM They are floor standing speakers. I guess I will try them on the floor, like you said. But, if I need to, I can build stands for them then.
I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row before I put this whole thing together.
NightSkyMurals 09-07-10, 05:27 PM OK, I am not any kind of expert on this... but why can't you build some adjustable stands and then raise and lower the speakers as needed? Did that just show my ignorance?
They are floor standing speakers. I guess I will try them on the floor, like you said. But, if I need to, I can build stands for them then.
I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row before I put this whole thing together.
lawdog2k 09-08-10, 03:24 PM Well, I decided to leave the floorstanding speaker on the floor for now. But, I have decided to build a center channel stand. I will post up some pics of the progress this evening.
Anyways.... I went with 2x12 wood 23" long. This will give me 1" space on both ends and flush front to back. I am staining it the same as my trim carpentry. The two pieces will be connected by two pieces of 3" sch 40 pvc. the pvc will be painted flat black. I think I will fill the pipes with sand, as well. I will have to wait to cut the pipe to the height I need when I get the screen installed.
I also purchased a spike set and rubber feet from partsexpress. I will put spikes in the bottom piece of wood and then put the rubber feet in the top plate. The spikes for obvious reasons, but the rubber feet are reverse for the center channel to sit on instead of gluing or screwing feet to my center channel.
Currently, the wood is stained, but not urethaned, varnished, or laquered. It's been pouring 'round here and really humid.
lawdog2k 09-09-10, 03:27 PM So, here's some pics of my currently under construction center channel stand...
The pvc mounts between the wood. Painted flat black

I plan on coating the wood with urethane and then screwing the mounts on the wood. I will use a couple small pieces of pipe to make sure the things line up the way they should and then mark where to drill pilot holes. I am gonna look for some type of covering for the mounting plates on those plastic pipe mounts.
Here's some updated pics of theater. I have four of the speakers mounted... The rears and side surrounds. The slap echo was loud, but they sounded good when I ran the radio through all channel stereo. I could very, very slightly hear it at the end of the hallway when cranked to "it wont go much higher" volume. I a, changing the entry door to the entry way to a solid door like the theater door itself. I think this will help with the leaking sound. I know the sound is coming from the equipment room through the gaping hole in the sound proof armor called an equipment rack.
I was thinking I could just leave the rack open and let it get the cool a/c, but I may have to close her up. I built a wood exterior for it, but it's only 1/4" wood. I may have to beef it up. I just hate the fans that come with the Mid Atlantic Slim five (the dual 4 or 5" ones in the top). Man, those things are loud in the theater room. Of course, that's with nothing else on and no carpet. I may see what they sound like when I get the system up and running. If I can't hear 'em, I may put them on a trigger. If not.... I don't know. New fans from coolerguys or whatever website I've seen 'round here.
The carpet is supposed to be in the end of this week and installed next week. We'll see. I want this thing done!
So, dead vent built to new spec except we made it the same height as the equipment rack. If I went six inches from ceiling it would disrupt a/c flow from the ceiling register.
Dead Vent (there is a 42 unit Slim 5 26" rack on the other side of that thing.)

6" dead vent grille in theater room. I'm planning on painting it the same color as the wall.

Ceiling mount for projector is up. There are two HDMI, one two pair 14 (for ir control) and one cat6(to be used with a vga balun for pc connection to projector). The light around the soffit is not that bright. My phone just liked the brightness and didn't really adjust white level. I'm gonna fix the flex tube hanging out of the ceiling.

Grafik Eye done, just not mounted in wall yet. It's slick. I'm gonna use the paired 14ga ran from it to my equipment room to control it with my harmony remote via Lutron Ir receiver and my ir extender/blaster in the equipment rack. should work well. Oh, yeah...I took it apart and painted it the same color as my walls....I stopped just short of texturing it too.

some around the room pics. Remember, the lights aren't that beaming....stupid "smart" phone camera. Oh, the side speakers are actually just in front of the steps down... almost directly to the side of the front row seating location. I took the equipment out of the rack because it was getting to dirty, even though I had it covered. I think I wanna rearrange it a little bit too. So, when carpet goes it, I will blow out equipment, clean the rack, mount projector, put together screen and mount screen...You know, the "finishing touches."

lawdog2k 09-17-10, 10:07 PM Lots got done today. Just waiting for the carpet to get over the last hump on the room. Carpet laid today and I've put three chairs together before I had to leave.
This isn't the carpet we had picked out. We kept getting run around from mill on our carpet we picked out per our budget from builder. It was a good quality carpet and looked good, too. But the carpet guy we went through got tired of waiting too. So the builder and he got together and pressured the supplier. The supplier cut us a huge break. We $54/yd carpet fir the suppliers cost. Man, this is some nice carpet. I'm sure glad we were getting screwed and got bumped up several notches.
The wrinkly screen is some muslin I put up a week ago when I put up the projector. I didn't want to assemble my fancy screen on raw, dirty concrete. I'll try and get it and the other chairs done tomorrow. Besides, I need the chairs in to figure out mounting height on screen.
Got a few more components to install in rack and then wire the rack up. Almost done with assembly stage. ;)
The other pics are our new kitchen. 23x18 and 10' ceiling. Man, it's huge compared to our old kitchen.

When I saw the pics I thought "what a cool viewing portal at the rear of the theater" ... but then I realized it was to keep the wife happy!
Nice carpet!
lawdog2k 09-20-10, 12:20 PM So, been dreaming for a few years. During that time I had been trolling several forums and digging out info on design. This is what I came up with as a final result. Still have some dialing in and final rack wiring to do. Then enjoy for a while, recoup budget, then treatments.

lawdog2k 10-03-10, 11:41 PM Couple new pics... Of kitchen. Almost complete darkness, iPhone with flash. I need to use my camera.
I'll try to take some pics of the theater ceiling. Almost all the blacklights are in now. Just missing a couple.
For reference, the arch is 8' wide and the island is 8' long.
Nice job lawdog2k. Looks like the theater is just begging to have a movie watched in there. Don't be afraid to take those tags off of the berklines. :)
lawdog2k 10-04-10, 08:23 AM Actually, I took em off last night.
Finally watched first movie in there last night, too. I wanted to wait til the mrs could watch with me. We watched star trek and, boy howdy, am I happy.
A few times I watched parts of a movie or played some hd audio discs. Needs some acoustic treatments, but man it sounds good and the picture is phenomenal.
Had volume cranked up a tad and shut the doors then walked down hallway. Only when the sub is hitting really hard can you barely, and I mean barely, hear it. I'm changing the door to the entry way yo the theater to a solid door like the theater door and this should help with the sound a little more.
Spaceman 12-17-10, 11:20 AM Great job, Ronnie. For some reason, I didn't see this thread until I saw your ceiling in the Night Sky Mural thread. I'm also in Houston and am considering Jeff for a night sky. I'd love to see your space sometime. My theater is still on the drawing board, with the exception of some drywall demo. Hope to make some progress in 2011.
chainsaw12117 12-17-10, 01:51 PM nice job
lawdog2k 12-21-10, 09:53 AM Chainsaw, thanks!
Spaceman, sometime after the first of the year you are welcome to visit. Just hit me up on here.
I got a new camera. Need to take some good pics.
lawdog2k 02-18-11, 03:02 PM Ok...been stupid busy in the near past to really play on any forums. So, after finally wrapping up all the construction loose ends, putting people away, and continuing raising a couple kiddos....here are some updated pictures. This time with a much better camera.

Lawdog2k thank you for the follow up pictures. I really love your theater. Awesome ceiling, great carpet choice, amazing screen shots. Thank you for sharing.
Jon
NightSkyMurals 02-18-11, 06:03 PM Dang LawDog2k... What a difference a few months makes. Awesome Room! Awesome work! And, awesome pictures! Great room for a great family!
Looks nice. If I move and do a theater again I may get carpet like what you have. What style/manufacturer is it?
lawdog2k 02-18-11, 08:03 PM Thanks, guys! It is truly an enjoyable space. Still working out some technical aspects before I get Dennis to do me an acoustical analysis.
Anyways, Xbox, I'll have to ask the carpet supplier my builder used. We had picked some other carpet out and the manufacturer drug their feet. His supplier then said he could get some nicer carpet (read more $) and they'd eat the price difference. Lemme figure it out for ya!
lawdog2k,
Yout theater looks AMAZING!!! It's just to bad the PJ had to drop down through the mural like that. Anyway you could build a bigger screen and move that puppy back?
Not sure if you've seen my build, but I intend on mirroring your mural for my theater room. Can't wait to finish my sofit and start painting it.
Again, beautiful room... Outstanding job.
Tom Hilton 02-19-11, 12:17 PM Hi Lawdog,
I recently got introduced to your thread via Jeff (NightSkyMurals)---your room is really attractive and I know you will enjoy it for many years to come! I've been an HT enthusiast since 1992, and my wife and I have found that home theater is one of those hobbies that just keeps on giving.:)
Just last August (the 14th), we had a night sky mural painted on our theater room ceiling. That appears to be very close to the time yours was painted. In fact, I believe that Jeff did both of our paintings as part of the same trip during one of his regional swings across the country.
Anyway, we're really enjoying our mural, as I'm sure you are enjoying yours. I noticed that you have taken some excellent photos of the ceiling, even when fully darkened. I was wondering what camera and technique you used to get such good pictures? People have asked me for pictures of my mural, but I haven't been able to produce anything that effectively displays how it really looks. I would like to take some photos similar to the ones you have posted, i. e., of the night sky mural in a completely darkened environment. Would you mind describing how your photography was done so that I could get myself pointed in the right direction? Please feel free to send me an AVS private message, if you prefer.
Thanks for any help you can give.:)
Tom
