I have been following this game for a while and it will probably be a buy for me.

Has anyone else in this forum been waiting for this baby to hit the shelves?

Any way here is a video of one of the characters in the game. I thought it was pretty comical.

I am just the opposite of you regarding Borderlands, the more I see the more I want to get my hands on it.

I really like the cell-shade type graphics and I was a big fan of Crack Down.

I like that Borderlands will take a FPS and add some depth into the game with the RPG element. Throw in 4 player co-op and I'm pretty sure this game will satisfy my gaming itch.

Actually it has my interest piqued as well. More than ODST does anyway if only b/c its differant and they really REALLY have this cool groove going on w/ the video clips they have been showing. The one previous to this one should a bit of gameplay - it had a really good tune playing behind it.

I'm very interested to see how this turns out. I'll buy it if it reviews decently.

There's a lot of potential here, but I'm a little concerned that this game will degenerate into an endless series of randomly generated fire-fights with little variation. It certainly looks cool, but we'll have to see if it has the "hook" that makes it addictive or if it just feels repetitive.

Same here. When I saw the trailer, I thought this game would be sick with the weapon combinations and co-op. The more I've read and seen about it lately has got me less and less interested.

Does anyone know if it will have local co-op play?

I enjoyed it. My rig could barely handle it.. I couldn't run with teams or anything.. All settings all the way down heh.. I would turn the settings way up and stand in one spot and enjoy the beauty every now and then..

It had problems but they were patching them up.. Before it died there was supposed to be a patch that was pretty important.. That patch never got released.

I hope boderlands kicks ass.. I enjoy fps/rpg type games. Even though cod4 is hardly an rpg/fps gaining exp for kills kept me playing for quite a while.

There has been a good amount of press on the weapons and gore, but I'd like to know more about the RPG side of things. GameInformer had a small preview on it that gave a bit more insight, but not much.

Only downside I see to this game is its almost on top of MW2's launch date. A few weeks past when this releases and most will be running around a diff't battlefield.

you are so right. with the imminent release of mw2 it puts a dampner on the possible success of this game. too bad it doesnt come out this month. i'd much rather pick this up than odst. :O

Honestly, if there is any game out there that reminds me of Borderlands, it's.... Far Cry 2. Just the open ended style of it.

Now, I love Far Cry 2. So I'm not complaining. But I bet a lot of people (including many of the defenders in the Kotaku comments... I don't know why I keep going back to read those idiots) will be very disappointed in it.

Jopopsy
09-24-09, 11:14 AM
I hated Far Cry 2. I'm really hoping this isn't like Far Cry 2. I feel like this is Diablo (loot) meets Fallout 3 (atmosphere) meets shooter. The quests may be redundant (but you know, many of WoW's are the same and that will never be confused w/ Far Cry 2), but I think the real thrust of the game will be the co-op/multiplayer.

I was anxious for this until they completely changed the game's graphics. Now it looks horrible. The original was mouth dropping awesome, I think it was a stupid decision to change it. This could of been the blockbuster game, but now it will not be as popular among everyone.

The original graphic style made the game look like every 3rd one under the sun. The new ones put it apart from everything else, they give the game an identity. And according to Gearbox, the game was sort of muddling around until they discovered this style. It revitalized the game's development.

I give Gearbox credit for doing the game their way and seeing what happens.

Will there be a public demo for Borderlands. Like I mentioned, the game has lost the "wow, I want that" factor for me so I am hoping if I get to play it a bit I will see what is actually fun about it. Looks like it would be fun for a weekend and then get old and tired after that. Hope this one turns out to be good though.

I don't know - I still haven't read anything that is dissuading me yet. Sure its a differant style, but what else is there? COD WWI & II types have been overplayed, and MW is in a class by itself. This looks differant and I'm willing to try it based soley on that alone.

I'm in the same boat. i am definitley going to hold off on this one. partly due to the amount of games coming out in october and partly due to impressions i have read. the loot whore in me really wants it but i have heard the actual gameplay feels weird. it takes many shots to bring down enemies and people say it never feels like you are actually hitting them. it just kind of causes their hitpoints to go down and they don't really react. but the art style really piques my interest and i hope it has a decent soundtrack due to the fact the trailer released a while ago had a pretty cool song in it. but gameplay overrides soundtrack and graphics to me everytime and i am not hearing good things.

I think I'm bummed by the seemingly lame skills, except for the Hunter - his options kick ass. Not that you picked poorly, just think most of the skills aren't what I'd like to see. I was thinking maybe a Soldier for my first character, but it's definitely Hunter now.

I have this game on pre-order but I'm thinking I may cancel it.

I love the idea of co-op FPS, RPG, and looting. The art style seems like a nice change of pace for a FPS. But after watching that video a few posts above, I'm getting the feeling this game will get boring very quickly.

It doesn't seem like there's a lot of enemy variety. It doesn't look like there's any story (is there?). It seems like you just run around and kill many of the same things again and again while trying to make your way towards audio files (I think that's what they were called).

If Forza 3 wasn't coming out the week after this (and MW2 3 weeks after this), I'd buy it without thinking. But since those 2 games are coming out shortly after Borderlands, I'm second guessing my purchase.

Can someone confirm how many different types of enemies there are? Is there any story at all? Do the environments change at all?

I'm thinking this may end up being like Sacred for me. I stopped playing that because I hated the camera... but the other big killer for me was that there really wasn't a story and all you did was pretty much level and loot. Leveling and looting can be fun (I loved Oblivion and Fallout 3), but without some variety and a little bit of story, it gets old for me pretty quickly.

Isn't it kind of messed up when they post downloadable content information before the game has actually released? It makes me feel like they intentionally hold content out of the game, just so they can then sell it for an additional fee later. I realize that sometimes the game is "frozen" long before it ships, with the extra content being worked on in that time, but I still don't like the trend.

I do not have a problem with it. It shows they have real concrete plans to support the title after the release. There are some games that say they are going to put out DLC, but never do or do it so late that the interest for the game has waned. There are weeks and weeks between the time the majority of the staff stops working on a game until they start doing something else. I would rather people be working on dlc instead of getting a lay-off notice.

I agree with this completely, though it IS refreshing when a developer starts working on DLC right away.... we all know when games go gold and begin being pressed, there is a significant gap between then and when the game is actually released on the streets for sale.... some devs take time off, celebrate, etc, other devs are already hard at work on DLC.

it's always a question if the DLC could have just been put into the game, and are they nickel and diming the customer, and i'd say thats a valid concern.

If the game is not worth my money before the dlc then 9/10 the amount of content in the dlc will not make it suddenly worth the purchase.

i just dont see how it got a rating that high. I mean the gameplay looks decent, but looks extremely repetitive and theres really no depth to the story. Just a bunch of frantic gun fights against the same enemies over and over again. Ive watched lengthy gameplay sessions on the web and i didnt exactly come away impressed. The graphics are nice though. I think if the story had more of an emphasis and there were heavy use of vehicles and such this would seem to have been a much better game. Right now it seems like fallout without the story. Which isnt very appealing in my mind.

Oh well, I have gamefly sending me a copy as well, at least that should be here tomorrow.

i just dont see how it got a rating that high. I mean the gameplay looks decent, but looks extremely repetitive and theres really no depth to the story. This game is meant to pick up a ton of loot and upgrade your character ala Diablo/Sacred except in First Person. If you like those games, you'll love this. Neither of those games had a story line, just plain fun hacking and slashing and in this case, shooting a bunch of baddies!!!

Same thing happened to my order at BB. I also did the buy one get one half off deal. I called their customer service and the very nice lady I spoke with was just as confused by the situation as I was. She offered to change it to in store pickup but the closest BB is an hour away. Since I got some gift cards recently I just had her cancel the order and will pick it up locally. Last time I preorder through BB. Release date delivery through a better online retailer will be the way I will go next time. The cynic in me says BB did this on purpose to get people to cancel orders.

Game is good but not great, feels like Fallout 3 with cell shaded graphics to me (and the graphics are not all that impressive). Another game that does not feel (at least so far) like it deserves the mostly high marks it has been receiving.
Very repetitive so far!

I didn't buy it myself but my friend did pick it up today and let me play it for a while. I probably put in about 2hrs before I quit. Got up to lvl 7, iirc. I can't say it was very repetitive just yet. I was doing several missions going about doing this and that. The leveling system and finding random weapons/equipment along the way adds to the addicitiveness of the game. I liked it so far!

Played as a soldier class (my friend was playing as that sniper guy) and I knew this would be the class for me. Gotta love the turret ability. :D I've found some seriously hard hitting weapons and tear up all sorts of things with them. Haha! Got to the first sorta boss guy and tried out this sniper rifle that my friend (playing as a sniper) didn't even find. He got a beating from this boss and it took him down to less than 10% (including completely wiping out his shields) in one shot from this rifle I found. Lolz!!! Second shot put him down for the count.

Formula sent me an invite for co-op play just as I was wrapping up but from how this plays I bet it would be massive amounts of fun with other friends, especially if they have different tactics. Heck, I haven't even got a chance to drive the vehicles yet. :p

I'll probably pick this up tomorrow or this weekend.

I agree with some of this. The thing is once you add 1-3 more players the game changes. I spent the better part of last night on a with three others while in a party with those guys and with two others running just behind us in the quest. Someone was talking every moment of the game and we were just having a great time.

Time was flying and before I knew it I was lvl 14 and it was 11:15... (I had to be awake for work at 5am)

Had a great time playing this last night. Its not deep by any means (at least not yet), but I like the missions and diabloesque loot system. I got up to a level 7 Hunter, but started over again w/ a soldier (I've never been that good w/ sniping).

Played w/ another friend - we had a good time w/ it. Glad I picked it up !!

I can't lie, I traded in a few games and picked up two copies. I played with my cousin for probably 3 hours and managed to become a level 12 Beserker while he played as the soldier. Super awesome as far as co-op is concerned. I like how the money and ammo is dispursed among the group if the members are close enough. I hate the flying things though...

Only used one vehicle and can't wait to flesh out that part of the game later.

I think I'll be picking this up this afternoon....as long as there is still a copy left. ;)

I'd like to hear more about the co-op and how that all works. I saw FormulaNerd online playing it but I didn't get a chance to play with. Looks like it is a drop in style so thats good but I wonder about level matching and completing missions.

I hate the flying things though...

Lolz! Before I got a chance to play, I watched my friend play his character for a while. He got attacked by this swarm of flying things and he was all like, "Oh, f**k! I hate those things." I laughed real good and replied, "Sweet! This game comes with a new breed of Cliffracers." :D

The coop is really well done. You can search for parties that have a similiar level. Exp, ammo, and $$$ is shared as long as the group is close together. Otherwise, business as usual killing animals/bandits and taking their loot; just like real life. I shot a deer and it crapped $50.00 and extra shotgun shells... WOOT.

Sunkist
10-21-09, 01:20 PM
I don't think you share ammo (doing splt screen we don't) but money yes. Exp seems to not be split evenly either since I am leveling up faster than my gf is, I think because I get more headshots so I get a bonus.

Can someone tell me how the local co-op is layed out? Side-by-side or top-and-bottom? On a 60" TV, would we still be able to see everything that is going on clearly?

My roommate does not play video games except for Williams Pinball and the occasional Yahtzee Family Game, but maybe I could convince him to play this with me. He gets easily frustrated with the controls in three-dimensional games, but I think once he learned how to properly move with the left stick and control the camera with the right, he'd enjoy them. He just needs to stick with it.

Sunkist
10-21-09, 01:38 PM
Side-by-side, you can see everything fine except dialog/mission boxes and your inventory, they don't shrink down to compensate for the split so you have to move it around to read it all. Annoying but you get used to it after a while, oh and I play on a 57" so similar size to you.

I have to say, this game is a lot of fun. As many have pointed out the positives already, let me bring up some things I don't like.

* Once you get far enough away from an area, the enemies you killed in that area re-spawn. It's not too much of an issue, but it does get a little annoying. My friends and I last night ended up leaving the main map/section of the game and traveling to this other section to do quests maybe 5-6 times. Each time you finish a quest you return back to the main map/section of the game and collect your reward(s). The annoying part for me, is that after 2-3 times traversing the same area, you get to learn how many enemies spawn and where they will be coming from. I wish this would have been more random. Perhaps no enemies spawn sometimes, or a lot more other times. And even if they changed up the enmies that do spawn it would make it better. Ehh... it's a grinding game though right? This is to be expected and wanted by a lot of people?

* Difficulty. There have been about 2 points in the game where things got way too hard for our level characters. We would be level 12 and taking on level 15 enemies (which means it takes about 30 seconds to 1 minutes for 2-3 people to take down one normal wastelander (is that a Fallout 3 term?) soldier. BOSS' were nearly impossible at times. We (3 total people) had to do a quest:

where you need to take out this guy and his entourage right by the main starting point in the game. This is the quest where after you finish, you get the vehicle. Anyways, we could not kill the guy we were supposed to. He had a shield and one hit from his weapon would take down our shields and put at health at about 1/2. Even if we did manage to get his shield lowered slightly (maybe 25%) and then we died, once we re-spawned and returned his shield would be fully recharged.

We all ended up quitting and a few hours later I tried it again with another friend (after we did a quest or two before it to level up higher. We did finish it... but it was still a PITA. There was another mission that original started as a level 13 mission (we were all level 13's), but by the end of it the difficulty changed to level 17. Maybe that's because a level 8 player joined our game? Or maybe the mission itself just got harder? But it was nearly impossible to kill the enmies and the BOSS at the end. After 2 hours we finally killed the BOSS but had to back track and fight all the same re-spawning, incredibly difficult enemies all over again. To get around that, I phasewalked as quickly as possible through the main areas and then sprinted to the exit :)

That mission was the easiest of the 2 others we had available. Luckily, one of my friends found a list of missions back at the main starting area (maybe 8 of them), and most of those are rated at our current level. So we've started playing those more and we're keeping the main quests until we no longer have any lower level quests to complete.

My point in stating all that, is that I don't feel like the pacing it right with this game at times. Most of the time it's crazy fun... but then at some random point in a mission, it seems like the enemies get 10X harder then before and it takes us all 2-3 deaths to get past 3-4 normal wasteland enemies. Perhaps it's our fault for not finding more side quests to level up our characters before tackling the main quests... but it's definitely frustrating to hit a wall where some enemies 10X harder to kill (and it appears to happen out of nowhere).

* I wish when a gun is picked up everyone around you gets it. I understand why it's not this way, but some times it's a little annoying. I've only played this with good friends of mine, but you can't help but sometimes feel like people are a little greedy with picking up a new weapon. I find myself fist looking to see if it's a weapon I even play with (I prefer assault rifles right now). If it is an assault rifle I spend a bit of time looking over the stats and trying to compare that with my current favorite gun.

But with the two friends I play with, they just seem to pick it up no matter what. I know they're worth money for selling... but still. I know it's a problem with the way my friends play the game, and not the game itself. But I feel like since experience and money is shared, why can't the guns be shared as well? This way no one ever feels like other players are being greedy. I can't even imagine playing this game with random people via XBOX LIVE match making. I doubt I'd even get a new gun :).

Sunkist
10-21-09, 02:06 PM
Yea I know exactly what areas you are talking about, we got caught the same way, doing fine and all of the sudden getting killed quick and running out of ammo then money trying to kill the bosses. Now we run around and level up a bit before tackling a mission, if the enemies start showing up above our level we start going back through areas (once they re-spawn) to level up some more. Works alright and we find good stuff/ make money selling what we find. I have some awesome shields and super crazy guns now (like kill equal level guys in one shot and nearly instant health regeneration). Man I post way to much in this thread but that's prob cause I wish I was playing right now...

check points you re-spawn at if no one saves you (or you don't save yourself). The you just gotta run back to join everyone and hope the re-spawned enemies don't get in your way.

LOL at loot whores. I like shotties and pistols, so there is not much competition when I played with some random people last night.

if anyone wants the viral achievement for playing with someone that played with a developer, send me an invite ;)

to touch on a few other things.

ammo is not shared... when you have time, you should fill up the ammo you DON'T USE so you're not picking up ammo that your buddies could be using.

the enemies and such are leveled to the party leader... if he's level 1, and you're level 20, you'll get no XP, but the enemies will be cake for you.... if you're the host at level 20, your level 1 buddy will be level 10 in around 20 minutes or so.

game is very addicting, i was up until 5am and called in sick to work... lmao.

the trespass ability for the hunter is amazing... you can completely bypass enemy shields and just chip at their life... couple that with a great sniper rifle and you can one shot kill a majority of the stuff you run into, even at your level.

if you're down, one of 3 things can/will happen.... a teammate can revive you (you can shoot the entire time), you can kill someone and revive yourself with a "second wind" or you can hold X to respawn at a New-U checkpoint (which costs a % of your bankroll).... also, if you bleed out, its the same as holding X to respawn.

I've been festering all afternoon on the build outs of my two toons. I'm not sure yet, but I'm kinda liking the Hunter as a Gunslinger w/ a touch of pet specialty. I feel like so far, I can get a couple shots off as a sniper but by than the pack closes in on me and I'm left scrambling anyway.

Soldier infantry build w/ a touch of support seems like a nice hybrid too.

Just not getting into this game. Graphics are crisp and clear (even though the crackdown like look is freaking horrible). Gun play is solid, nice open world. But it just doesn't feel right. Respawning enemies is lame. Again, graphics, wow, poor choice, I knew it was coming, still, its lame for a game like this. Leveling up is almost useless, you really don't get much (ooh your special power cools down 3 seconds faster). Weapons are almost all just standard guns, with a few with elemental powers. Thats it, ever. Lots of running back and forth, no save anywhere. Just to many small negatives are adding up to not so much of an enjoyable experience.

Played for 2 hours last night with my Daughter, we loved the split-screen mode (much better than Halo making me squint). It was a fun level of violence, and she liked the loot. I am having fun with the Hunter mode, but I need another slot for a shotgun; like others have said, once they get too close you are in big trouble. I hate those stupid "Dog" creatures, not fun just annoying. Strangely, I like this game better than Fallout3... call me weird.

It's a "Vertical Split", ie side-by-side. On my 50" it is quite playable, I like it better than the Halo style over-under split. Although Halo gave a superior Peripheral view, the aspect ratio made me squint. The only drawback to the Borderlands view is that you tend to get nailed easily when attacked from the side. I like it though, for me it "feels right".

it's weird how people keep mentioning crackdown.... i have probably 100 hours or so into crackdown, and borderlands (even with a similar graphical style) doesn't remind me of crackdown at all, not even a little bit. if anything it feels like fallout without broken gunplay.

leveling up is far from useless.... there are just some skills that complement each other, and other skills that are somewhat useless (depending on what you want to do)... if you don't know what you're doing, you could easily spec your skills wrong, and have some pretty useless upgrades.... i could easily re-spec my level 32 hunter and make him useless... but as it stands, i bring the party more loot, i health regen the entire team +6 constantly, and i do the most damage (out of our group of 30-somethings).

as far as the weapons go, i'm sure you didnt play the game at all, and you never got any of the alien weapons.... IMO they're pretty far from "normal" guns... but i guess i would have liked to see some more creativity, kind of like fallout.

with the car and the fast travel system, i dont feel like i'm running back and forth anymore, and the save system is perfect, very frequent checkpoints, and i can SAVE and exit ANYWHERE.... i dont know where you get that you can't save anywhere.... seems like every 100 yards there is an autosave beacon.

seems like a really good sniper rifle is one of the rarest items to drop, at least at the stage of the game i'm in, so i can see how you feel a little overwhelmed, but my crit's are maxed, as is my trespass (completely bypass enemy shields), so i never really have any problems with anyone rushing me.... maybe i would in some parts playing by myself, but thats what coop buddies are for :)

I finally got off my bizarro-scope 3 shot rifle. One of the weapon chests popped out a 141 damage 0.8 rate 96 accuracy 5 shot rifle with a full view scope. It's much more fun to shoot with, and pretty good for my level 16 character. Do the alien weapons have classes? I'm hoping they do and I'll be able to find an alien sniper rifle eventually.

Also, I am way digging the revolvers for my hunter. It makes a really great backup weapon for me, especially having a scope one.

Just wait till you get a sniper rifle that does fire damage, then all you gotta do is shoot them once and watch them burn, way fun. I was using revolvers too but then I found a awesome shotgun and now I combo that with my sniper rifle (and an SMG for fun). I am hoping to find another really kickass one to use though cause mine does good damage but only holds 2 in the clip so I am always reloading.

i've JUST started to get some pretty good drops. my sniper is 366, 97.6 acc, and 4.7 fire with 6 round clip.

i've got a pistol that does corrosion with a 28 rd clip and fires at 14.7 fire rate, and i've got a class mod that adds 65% to my pistol fire rate... lmao.... it's insanely fast, but a clip burns out VERY fast, and a clip+ corrosion will take down a guy really fast, and i'm not sure if there is a reload buff, but it reloads very fast.

i've JUST started to get some pretty good drops. my sniper is 366, 97.6 acc, and 4.7 fire with 6 round clip.

i've got a pistol that does corrosion with a 28 rd clip and fires at 14.7 fire rate, and i've got a class mod that adds 65% to my pistol fire rate... lmao.... it's insanely fast, but a clip burns out VERY fast, and a clip+ corrosion will take down a guy really fast, and i'm not sure if there is a reload buff, but it reloads very fast.

if you want to accelerate your character development, shoot me an invite tonight. :)

I have a similar sniper rifle but I can't use it till I go up one more level (19)!
I also have a bazooka that can do similar but it also can't be used just yet.

They don't seem to have good splash damage, like things around what you hit rarely get hurt. I mostly use them on bosses since they do nice damage on that one target. Way different feeling than every other FPS.

[QUOTE=formulanerd;17400761]it's weird how people keep mentioning crackdown.... i have probably 100 hours or so into crackdown, and borderlands (even with a similar graphical style) doesn't remind me of crackdown at all, not even a little bit. if anything it feels like fallout without broken gunplay.

leveling up is far from useless.... there are just some skills that complement each other, and other skills that are somewhat useless (depending on what you want to do)... if you don't know what you're doing, you could easily spec your skills wrong, and have some pretty useless upgrades.... i could easily re-spec my level 32 hunter and make him useless... but as it stands, i bring the party more loot, i health regen the entire team +6 constantly, and i do the most damage (out of our group of 30-somethings).

as far as the weapons go, i'm sure you didnt play the game at all, and you never got any of the alien weapons.... IMO they're pretty far from "normal" guns... but i guess i would have liked to see some more creativity, kind of like fallout.

I am level 30, so played a lot. There are two weapon types, regular ammo and "elemental". Alien or not, that is all you get. Hardly a variety or anything special.

Leveling IS useless compared to other games. Ooohhh your bloodwing cools down faster, or you have people drop some more loot, or you get hit points to regen 3% faster. Still a lame leveling up system, and the critics agree with me.

Mentioning crackdown is only to mention the comparison between the two for graphical look and feel, the games are seriously different besides that one thing, it is just a point of reference.

Its pretty simple actually:

Take the leveling / skill point allocation system of WoW
Take the loot mechanics of Diablo
Take the environment of Fallout
Mix in any FPS mechanics/dynamic of your choice
Add a Grindhouse/Quentin Tarantino feel/vibe

Voila - Borderlands

This game is REALLY good for me. My addiction continues tonight !

Loved the intro into the game and the humor. Like how all the guns are a little different and you really have to weigh which benefits you like. Cool reload animations on the sniper rifles and like how the different ammo capacities are shown while reloading. Having a blast with it, can't wait for my friends to get hold of a copy - sucks it was sold out when one of them was in Niagara Falls on release day.

guys so is this game worth the money or its just another mediocre shooting game??

On Tuesday, i was sitting at my desk, and logged on to Xbox live. About 15 of my friends that were on at that time was playing Borderlands. I messaged several of them with the specific question: do I buy the game now, at full price, or do I wait a while and buy it when it is cheap. The Unanamous answer was buy now.

The key to this game is playing 4 player co-op (you do not need 4 players, but having someone to talk with and do mission together is far more fun than doing it alone). This game reminds me so much of diablo 2. The mindless killing, desire to level up, desire for more skill points, desire for better weapons, better armour, more kills, etc. Sounds mundane, and repetitive, but the reason why we keep doing it is because the game is rediculously addictive. If you have never played Diablo 2, or WoW, then you may not understand this concept. If this type of gameplay makes you bored, then this is not the game for you. Just like Diablo, or WoW, time just seems to fly by. I started playing at 8pm last night, and before I knew it its was past midnight.

The reason to buy now, is because like most Xbox games, population of gamers will dwindle (especially with Forza 3, and MW2 comming out). If you like the 'concept' of games like Diablo 2 (and to a certain extent Too Human), then why wait to get this game, play it now while everyone is playing it.

Yeah, the rectangle that covers about the middle quarter or third of the screen. You can still see a bit outside the scope, but it is seriously dimmed out, and the scope housing graphic covers enough that your vision of enemies just outside your target view is seriously reduced. I'm not a fan of it, but I'm not sure if I would dump an awesome rifle just because of it.

i had a launcher with 375x3 damage 2x zoom scope, and 3 round capacity. i sold it for a 421x3 damage x4 shock damage 3 round capacity also. boy what a mistake. for some reason the shock damage on that launcher only damages there shields. its very odd. might be a bug but i dont know.

Does anyone know how the damage of guns works. For example, if a gun has a damage of 50 and the box that lists additional stats below that says + 50% damage, does that mean:

1.) The gun as a total damage of 50. The additional + 50% damage is already included in the original damage rating?

2.) The gun has a total damage of 75. The original damage plus 25 points for the + 50% damage increase?

I think that's how it's supposed to work. Shock is great against shields, just like fire is great against flesh (humans). So if you're up against a human with a shield, use your shock weapon to remove his shield quickly, then switch to a fire weapon to kill off his health.

I like it this way because it keeps things interesting. I initially started (for my Siren character) making her use a broad range of weapons. I'd carry an assault rifle, shot gun, revolver, and rocket launcher for the bosses. But after reading around on the net and checking out the skill trees, I changed my mind on how I was building my character. My girl is designed for SMG's and pretty much only SMG's. So I switched to carrying 3 SMG's (all with different elemental powers (depending on the enemy)), and a shotgun just in case I happen to run out of SMG ammo.

This game is very addicting....I find myself jonesing for a Borderlands fix when I'm not playing. I love it even though I've been disappointed with being a hunter so far. I didn't find an awesome sniper rifle until level 29, wtf is with 85% of the sniper rifles having a 1.0x zoom? Also got annoyed by the useless go-go gadget bird not attacking anyone farther than 100 feet, or dive bombing straight into a wall and spinning in circles. The bird was kind of a running joke with my squadmates.

I gave up with that and switched over to SMGs since the hunter has insane reload speeds, and I'm beefing up the bird who's finally becoming a beast with quick cooldowns. Love dueling with friends since the bird drops them instantly.

as for damage and weapon buffs, it should be base+weapon trait+elemental (if applicable) + buffs from your weapon proficiency

I am liking this game. It was pretty fun playing with one of my coworkers for several hours today even though we were both hunters (leveled in the teens) and went into some cave for a quest and died about 20 times. After we got out of the cave we did pretty good though.

The one thing that is somewaht dissappointing in the game (maybe I misunderstood) is the loot. They said this was a game about collecting loot kinda like a diablo type game except with guns. But really there is not that much to be had. I dont know, maybe if I hadnt just played Two Worlds where much much unique loot abounds I would feel otherwise. Plus there doesnt really seem to be that "exploring" sense that you would get with a Two Worlds or a Fallout. If I was looking for a loot hunting game or a game where I would explore the worlds then Two Worlds would be my choice over this as would, of course, Fallout 3.

Still, if I want a polished open world shooter with some skill tree work then right now nothing is going to beat this. I just don't know that I am going to spend the 50-100 hours on it like those other games.... but then I am thinking of playing3 of the 4 characters through the "story" so we will see how long the first playthrough takes.

I am level 39 now, playing through with the guide book so I don't miss any quests, weapons, etc.

No good weapons, alien weapons are just elemental weapons. Very little variety, its either elemental or regular ammo (or regular ammo that does elemental). I even checked the strategy guide I have, and sure enough, all weapons are listed and I am exactly right.

There is just no way to properly judge the game if you're only playing single player.

You don't need 5 levels in one skill. You need 5 levels between the first 2 skills to open the second 2, 10 levels between the first 4 to open the next 2, and 15 levels between the top 6 to open the bottom one. It makes it pretty easy to skip the crap skills entirely, IMHO. I also don't feel the skills are really co-op based. Most of the hunter skills area a benefit to the hunter (faster reload, more damage, less sniper rifle sway, more pistol damage, more loot from Bloodwing, daze enemies with Bloodwing). The things that seem overly co-op oriented are the class mods, but even those have variants that are almost entirely selfish.

i finally played a nice game with 4 similarly leveled characters, ONE OF EACH. setting the class mods properly was amazing.

I (siren) added 33% to everyones shield
the beserker added 52% health to everyone
the soldier added full ammo regeneration so our ammo was unlimeted
the hunter (and partially the beserker) had health regen so the whole party would regenterate shields.

as the siren i was dazing everyone, and the hunters bird was dazing any leftovers... so basically we had unlimited shields, ammo, health and all of the enemies or most of them would be dazed/corroded/in flames.

very cool... we were playing playthrough number two where you almost need that type of teamwork (though i could easily solo as a hunter if i wanted, since the difficulty is scaled)

i'm gonna post pics of my unique weapons later... if you guys have anything to brag about, post it up!

i've got a 44 Siren and 42 Hunter... i'll probably take the Siren to 50 then start a berserker and a soldier so i can finish the remaining achievements.... if anyone needs help with speedy mcspeederton, i'm on a boat, or the gearbox developer achieve, let me know.

at level 44-45 i can go evenly with bird/sniper or bird/pistol, either way i can more than hold my own.

last night i was running a gunslinger mod (60% pistol fire rate) with 8 points in relentless (something about a kill shot, and high rate of fire after killing an enemy), you wouldnt believe how high the fire rate gets (with all weapons) after i proc that relentless skill with a kill... and i hadnt even invested points into the other skill which raises the rate of fire on pistols in general (accuracy too i think)

i also have a revolver that does explosive, lightning, fire, AND corrosive damage in every other shot... that really helps :D

post up what level you are and i can give some recommendations

I use Sniper, shotgun, SMG, revolver as my loadout, mostly shotgun and sniper though. I can usually kill a guy in one shot with the sniper so just the psychos and bruisers take several shots or one in the face from the shotgun if they make it close enough.

I have to say, this is my surprise hit of the year so far. Absolutely a ton of fun. While it's lacking in many areas, it's excelling most games in one catergory by a large mile: FUN.

I'm a level 19 Soilder now and been playing with a buddy who's is a level 19 hunter also. The game was quite hard for a while mainly due to ammo issues and weak guns but as we understood the game mechanics more and got better loot, we started to gel with the game a lot more and now it's downright stupid fun.

If got a badass revolver a while back and it's been my goto weapon. Already got it upto level 8 proficiency! Found a shotgun that fires rockets. And now with my Soilder spec'd up, ammo isn't an issue.

Formula,

It seems that class proficiency doesn't carry over to actual leveling but only the options to level it up in the skill tree. Do I have that right?

if you're talking about a class mod, then yes.

if you have say... 3 points in your turret damage skill, and a class mod adds +4 turret damage, AS LONG AS YOU INVEST AT LEAST 1 POINT in to your turret damage skill, you'll have an additional 4 points invested... but you must invest at least 1 point to get the class mod benefit.

when you plan a character, you need to figure out exactly what you want to do, and PLAN AROUND YOUR CLASS MOD.

i have a purple class mod of each type for my hunter, there are 6 or so i believe.... if i swap a class mod, I AM RE-SPEC'ING MY SKILL TREE AROUND THE CLASS MOD.

this is very important.... some skills that you enjoy having 5 points in, now can have 2-3 points and still get a 5 point benefit.... other skills (like cooldown) benefit EXTREMELY from having 8-9 points in the skill (my bird recharges in right around 2 seconds!)

but always figure out which class mod you want to use before putting points in anything (or reset your skill points at a new-u station, it's cheap!)

also, weapon proficiencies have extra benefits (on the character screen) that apply after everything else is said and done. (and some said this game wasn't at all like an rpg.)

So formula which skills do you find useful on your Siren?

On my lvl31 I have been using the controller tree mostly because I like Mind Games (with my current mod 35% of my bullets daze). So whatever I'm fighting seems to stay dazed.

it depends on your play style.... at first i was doing SMG + elemental proc enhancement.... this is great for x1 or x2 elemental weapons, but somewhat useless with x4 elemental weapons, cause they constantly proc on their own.

for my siren, it's set up now as mainly a support character.

rather than actually kill everything i encounter, i boost every team shield by 33% or so, and i daze everyone when i enter phase, and burn or corrode (depending on situation) when i exit phase..... when everyone on the battle field is dazed and burning with fire or acid, AND my teammates have 33% more shields, they can easily take care of anything i don't.

again, it really boils down to your play style and which class mods you have/like.... but that type of support role is heavy heavy controller with a defender class mod. any remaining points should/can go to quicksilver/venom or slayer/enforcer.

The sad part of this game: It comes to an end. I just finished my 1st playthrough, I am a level 38 Soldier, and gametime seems to be at 34-35 hours. I figure, likely less time my second playthrough, but with harder enemies, likely will need some more strategy. Overall, superb game. The best part is that I have been jumping in and out of friends games (and friends do the same), and that has been half the fun.

I am glad they have already planned DLC for this game. Personnally I am amazed with the size of the game.

You haven't got to New Haven yet, Formula? What?! :p

For those who have got there...or are going to get be there soon, there is a VERY effective money making scheme to do there that my friend showed me.

Unfortunately, I cannot describe it very well in detail if you haven't been there but I'll try my best. There are five weapon cases inside a small radius on the inside of New Haven (the NH area is pretty small with a town and a surrounding junk area outside) town area. There is also a sixth case to the northeast just next to a transition to another area at the north. Most of the weapon cases are on rooftops or on a balcony. If you do this "weapon run" the right way it is a circle you run in and can be done in about five minutes.

EDIT: I may have got the details wrong since I cannot look at the game from work. But I was referencing 'north' as to looking straight at the save thingie once you enter town. If that is not actually north I will update this post later...

EDIT 2: Nevermind. I found a video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq0EwCCtDH4

Watch the video and read my description. In the video he goes to "my fifth" case first by jumping onto a barrel instead of jumping from the other roof and then runs to "my optional sixth" second. You can see he wastes a good amount of time fight bandits and bugs. You don't have to come out there for this but it helps. Then his third case is the first one in my description. Use the video to visually see where all the cases are but I'd highly recommend doing it in the order in my description to maximize time spent doing this if you intend to make a lot of money in a short amount of time.

If you get to town for your first time (or if you know the area) there is an open area with one of those fast travel/save thinies and a guy named Scooter to your right. Look to the left and you will see a staircase. Go up this and keep going straight on the roof. Jump over a small railing and to your right will be your first case. It is one of those white weapon cases. Turn to the west and you will see the edge of the roof with a railing and the edge of the perimeter of the town area. You can jump onto the fence perimeter and there is a red awning that u use to jump to your right. There is a small balcony with a red case and a small safe with some cash. Grab all that stuff. Jump down off the balcony and down to the ground and to the left in the corner is another case. This another white case. Come out from the corner and go back down the alley (this is the alley that has a weapon vendor on it, fyi) and you will see a staircase directly in front of you. Go up this and to your left will be a washing machine. Jump up on this and there will be a satellite dish right in your face. Turn left and there is another white case. From here jump down to where the top of the stairs you just went up were and look east. Jump across the roof until there is a smallish shack extension to the east connecting to a building. Jump onto this and then jump onto that building to find what may be your last case. This will be a red case.

This run can be done in just a couple of minutes and depending on how much inventory space you have you can go run out for a sixth case which is up to the northeast but you will run into a few bandits and some bugs on the way to another white case.

Depending on what level you are at the time, you will find the bestest stuff in the world or stuff that makes you go, "meh". Either way you can do this for about 15mins and make well over $100,000 in that time. Sometimes you find a bunch of expensive stuff, sometimes not. It is different every time.

The 'trick' to this is to grab all you can and then exit out of the game. Once you have sold all the equipment, run to the closest save point (the first one I mentioned by the first staircase you use for this...) and as soon as the Borderlands upsidedown 'V' is gone, it is saved and hit 'start' and go to 'exit'. It will save and exit to the main menu. Reload your current save and all the cases have been replenished. Rinse and repeat.

Enjoy. :)

Btw, there is also a 'duping item' trick in this game if you know a friend that has something you want.... you both can have it. Or you can keep duping expensive items for money. :D

If you select the exit option from the pause menu it saves the game anyway, you don't need to go near a save point.

Yea... but even though there are a lot of guns, it's tough to find the super rare guns that have bonuses like unlimited ammo. And what happens when 2 people in your party use a pistol a good amount of the time and they open a chest that shows super rare and awesome pistol? Who gets to pick it up and keep it? Why even bother worrying about that... just dupe it so both can be happy :).

My buddy and I have been playing late night co-op (with a little single player in between) for a few nights and it's so hard to turn the game off even when you're falling asleep on the couch from exhaustion! It's basically Crackdown (aesthetic and co-op feel) meets Diablo (level grinding and loot gathering) meets Fallout 3 (setting) with some incredibly tight gunplay. You can only join games if the games are open to everyone. Otherwise it has to be invite only. (for example, most people end up starting a single player game, thus, people can only join if invited). That is likely the reason why the number of available games are limited. Also, I have noted matchmaking is limited to the current mission that you are on. That will limit the avaiable games well. Sorta makes sense, because you will not get credit for many missions if you jump too far ahead.

i've never tried matchmaking, but i join different friends anywhere from 3 to 10 times every single day and i've never even had one single issue joining a friend, you may have something wrong with your configuration.

OK. I thought there might be a way to get into games that friends are already playing, that seems to be my problem...

the best way to start is to join their party.

1. They can send you an invite
2. when you boot the game, your dashboard will notify you of "friends/party playing borderlands" hit the guide button at that time, it will show you the party or friends playing, you can press X to join session.
3. from the main menu, choose xbox live, scroll down and choose find xbox live party, it will show you party members playing and you can press X to join session in progress

also, private games are open to party members, it isn't strictly invite only, i've even had a party member join my SINGLE player game, so i dont even think single player games are private :)

it seems like it fluxuates a bit, but i've only seen between $5,000 and $7,500 or so.

what is the weapon multiplier?

for instance, i have a shotgun that says 12 x 15 damage.
i have another shotgun that shoots rockets and does like 129 damage.
when i compare the 2, the 12 x 15 damage shows as better than the 129 damage.

does this mean that shotgun #1 is actually doing 12x15=180 damage per shot?

Scott Simonian
10-28-09, 02:51 PM
That is the base damage times the projectile count. With a shotgun, there are multiple pellets or shot that can hit the target. If each of these hit your target you can do massive damage. Some other weapons have this feature as well. I've had pistols and SMG's that shoot 2 or more rounds at a time and you can really tear someone up with those. :D

Ugh. I really want to get this game, but I know if I do, my other games will get put on the back burner. I could pick up this and Ratchet and Clank Crack in Time, but what third game to get in the Best Buy deal this week? I barely scratched the surface of Forza 2, so I don't even want to bother with Forza 3. And I already picked up Uncharted 2, Batman, and Beatles Rock Band at Toys-r-Us a few weeks ago. I am not into fighting games, so Tekken and Fairytale Nights are not a possibility. I guess I could pick up ODST. Is that worth $40? I'd only play the single player in that since I don't really do vs multiplayer. I guess I could give the co-op in that game a go at some point to extend its life a bit. EDIT: I also got Brutal Legend the week it came out, too, so that is not an option for this deal.

Anyway, reading about you guys playing this game is making me jealous. :)

There's no risk of corrupting the save?

^^ never had that happen, but you could just use the guide button and Y back to the dashboard.

I just backup my game save to a memory card every night before turning off the xbox. I'd think your idea could lead to corrupt data. If the game starts saving just as you hit the power button, you could be in for some trouble.

Either way you're in for trouble if your special doesn't work.

If my special doesn't work I'd just replace the save on my xbox with the one from my memory card. Worst case, I lose 1 day worth of playing.

I was just giving a tip to people who do not back their **** up on a memory card. I need to pick up a memory card.. Can I backup my saves on the small amount of space on my arcade units internal 256mb?

I know... and it's a good tip. I was just stating that it could leave to save file being corrupt. Hopefully a patch is released so no one needs to worry about losing all their stats.

I don't have an arcade with an internal memory card so I can't tell you. Locate your save file on your hard drive and try to copy (not move) it to your internal memory card.

I wasn't angry at you.. Just sorta angry I don't have a memory card on hand. Hopefully I can copy it to the 256.

Are we saying the game has a major "showstopper" type bug? Should we be waiting on a patch or something before doing certain activities? Kind of scary, and in fact it sometimes makes me happy when I have to wait until Christmas to pick up some of these titles, because often by then the first major patch is already out.

How do you increase your weapon efficiency? I'm a level 9 hunter but my efficiency for each weapon is 0. Thanks.

Efficiency increases with usage. Just keep using your favorite weapons and the efficiency will increase on it's own.

It's weird. I'm having the lost weapon proficiency problem, but only with Brick. Every time I leave the meter for each weapon goes back to zero. I have a level 42 soldier and have never had a problem with him.

Losing skill points and wep prof is not a common bug but if it happens to you it doesn't matter if it's common or not.

It's a known issue they are trying to resolve. I just back up the character I am playing every couple hours if I am playing online.

seems like an issue if you leave single player to join multiplayer..... even when i play alone i set up a private xbox live match so that friends can join later.

i'm not even sure if i've ever played single player, except for the very first time i played the game.
