BOSE is extremely overpriced, I can safely say its the most hated brand in any online audio forum.

BOSE is not an option for anyone that spends more then two minutes online reading about why its horrible.

btw, I have a BOSE 321 in the one bedroom :D It was free so its not bad because it was free ;)

What would you recommend for a set of 5.1 speakers?

That isnt an easy question to answer.

There are many questions that need answering...to start we would have.

1. Budget
2. Size of room
3. Listening distance
4. Listening positions (multiple rows, wide seating)
5. SPL requirements
6. Precentage usage for HT vs Music
7. Size restrictions & Aesthetics

2. It's a medium sized living room.
3. Fairly close
4. A chair near the center of the room and a couch off to one side
5. ??
6. 80% films and 20% music for satellite radio mostly
7. No size resrtictions. It's a big room.

What would you recommend for a set of 5.1 speakers?

I would recommend that you buy whatever fits your budget that sounds good to YOU. You need to grab some reference material and a journal to write down your thoughts and start auditioning speakers, as many as you can. A dozen people could chime in here and "suggest" all different kinds of speaker brands. All you are getting is opinions of what THEY prefer, whatever the flavor of the month seems to be or is on close out at Audio Advisor or Accessories 4 less.

Each of us hears, interprets and experiences things having to do with sound differently. What may sound wonderfully detailed and pleasant to you, may sound harsh, forward and unlistenable to me. Which of us are right? We both are. I prefer Jiff peanut butter, but does that mean Jiff is the best peanut butter or that you will prefer it? No not necessarily at all. Especially to the folks who prefer Peter Pan, Skippy, the value priced store brand or the home made stuff whipped up from Planter's dry roasted peanuts in the Veta-Vita-Veggie-Mixer by Ronco at home.

Before you say there is no where to listen to speakers anymore, grab your yellow pages and start doing some looking and calling around. While there are less audio or "stereo" type shops anymore, there are tons of Home Theater companies sprining up every day. HT is also a big part of whole house automation type companies. You should also call several high end custom builders in your area. Many of them use independent guys who design/build multi-thousand dollar HT's in million dollar homes that you will never see advertise or listed anywhere. Yet all of them often times have samples available to audition for potential customers and are glad to let you grab a listen.

The bottom line.... set a firm budget or at least one that is within reason and do as much listening as you possibly can. There are all kinds of speakers out there. So you will get all kinds of answers to the questions like "what should I buy, which will sound the best, which is better, brand A or B?" None of which can be answered by anyone other than you. Take your time, audition as much as you can and trust your own ears. You'll be glad you did.

Good luck.

#5 SPL level -> means how loud do you like to watch your movies?

Listening distance and the speaker SPL levels which is measured in dBs are very important to picking speakers. Speakers are not build the same way, some speakers will not work very well during movie playback if you are 12 feet away and you want 90dBs at your listening position, movies have peaks that are 15-25dBs that means your average speaker is clipping during those peaks. Its actually a common occurance during Movie playback and its why soem people now realize that higher sensitivity speakers are required IF the person has specific needs.

At your budget there are lots of low costs solutions but others will have to post their favorite "soup de jour" for you, I do not think there are significant differences from brand to brand at that level.

You don't need a SPL to know Smucker's Natural is the best Peanut Butter on market:D

And no, penngray. I didn't do any scientific testing to support my peanut butter of choice:D:D

And yes, Jamo has several options that would fit into your budget.

You'll need to do some auditioning and find out exactly what type of speakers you like.

If you decide on Jamo, I can probably make a few suggestions on a system that would work well for you.

What receiver or Pre Pro will you be using?

I'm also confused about something.

Is it a medium sized living room, or a big room without size/space restrictions? What are the dimensions?

Is your $500-$1000 budget just for the speakers, or is the receiver or Pre Pro incuded in that budget?

What about a subwoofer/subwoofers? Where does that fit into the budget?

What kind of room is it, in terms of windows? Lots of big windows? Very few windows?

Is it a well enclosed area, or are there several doorless doorways or doorless arches that lead into other areas of the house?
