View Full Version : First person shooter recommendation?
Blazing Saddles 09-09-09, 10:16 AM I am pretty burned out from playing RPG / MMO type games, the hack & slash thing is getting a tad old for me... I am not into the futuristic / fantasy theme either, is there something set in a more recent / modern environment? A friend of mine suggested one of the Ghost Recon games, but he said that the online play was lacking..
Any suggestions?

I think I can rent that from my local video store, I like to try before I buy and all that...
Any suggestions on a good class setup?
ENiGmA1987 09-09-09, 11:12 AM Section 8 has pretty good multiplayer, it is a sort of Halo meets Call Of Duty 4.
Modern Warfare 2 will be out in a couple months so wait on a CoD game to get that.
Through I haven't played it yet, and do intended to, the new bond game is supposed to be a good rental with most poeple beating it in one sitting.

I may have to look in to that one too, appreciate the tip! :)
Does any of the COD games support split screen local co-op? The wifey likes to join in on the fun from time to time...
How about vehicle support, tanks, choppers, etc?
shagino 09-09-09, 11:25 AM Halo 3 has a 4 player coop campaign.
Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 has a 2 player coop.
The 4 player Halo co-op isn't local, its networked and he doesn't like aliens.
If you wants etc check out battlefield 1943 $15, battlefield 2 $20 battlefield bad company $20
All have vichels and big explosions etc.
Theres a battlefield bad company demo on the marketplace

Played all the Halo series a bunch, havent tried Rainbow Six yet though... How does the online play compare to the COD games?

call of duty 5 (world at war) (http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/media/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8024156081c/?p=1&of=1&bt=0&sb=1#offers)

call of duty 1 was on ps2, call of duty 2 was the first one on the 360, no demos for 3, 4, and now modern warfare 2

Its highly personell prefrence. Halo is more popular by and large but not on this board.
Halo fairs much better lag wise, where a tiny bit of lag will get you killed in COD.
I play COD much more often then Halo as I prefer the quicker pace of a few bullets to a kill vs having to empty a clip (with the AR) to kill someone one (halo).
Also I've been playing networked Halo since Halo CE
i wub haloz! we're just seperated right now... modern warfare 1 got in the way
Blazing Saddles 09-09-09, 12:48 PM i wub haloz! we're just seperated right now... modern warfare 1 got in the way
Hmmm... modern warfare 1...
Kind sir, would you happen to know if there are any good deals for said modern warfare 1?
assasyn 09-09-09, 12:49 PM Have you tried Modern Warfare?
Blazing Saddles 09-09-09, 12:56 PM Have you tried Modern Warfare?
No sir, I have not! It does sound like a nifty good time though...
ENiGmA1987 09-09-09, 01:23 PM Best would be just to buy it used from Game Stop, but again, Modern Warfare 2 comes out in a couple months... But at least that will drive the cost of the first game down.
If you want to have some fun. Try Shadow Complex. It is not a first person shooter but you will have a blast.
eatenbacktolife 09-09-09, 02:00 PM Left 4 Dead is the best multiplayer(versus) game I've played in like, ever. It also has split screen, and seems to be extremely popular with women for some odd reason, so your wife might get a kick out of it.
Blazing Saddles 09-09-09, 02:56 PM Wow, it seems as though there are a plethora of good first person shooter choices to make here!
bbexperience 09-09-09, 03:06 PM How about BioShock? Great game, but no co-op play.

The wifey actually enjoyed playing Gears of War 1 and 2 with me, especially the Horde mode...

Funny you say that. It's the only 360 game my wife has shown any interest in other than a few arcade titles. She's terrible but keeping her alive adds some additional fun and difficulty.
ENiGmA1987 09-09-09, 04:02 PM Left 4 Dead 2 comes out in a couple months too, no sense buying that game yet either...
Man, seems like Ive been thread hating a lot lately. Recommending people to wait for like everything cause the new stuff comes in a couple months... Oh well.
There are still plenty of players playing GRAW 2.
There are still plenty of players playing R6V2.
Both are very good modern games. GRAW2 is more open world, R6V2 is more indoors.
Personally I like TF2 (team fortress 2) as part of Orange Box. Probably the best deal overall for the Xbox. I was playing last night, at times there were upwards of 10-15 open rooms to choose from and who know how many full rooms.
CoD4, CoD5 can't go wrong with either. I would pick CoD5 over 4, because CoD6 is comming out in a few months. Only negative is that there are WW2 weapons. However, many people like WW2 better than modern, so the community will stay till CoD7 comes out.
I like battlefield games. Modern Combat is modern, vehicles, helicopters, etc. Multi classes. But EA has only left a handful of servers. Half the time the servers are always full so one cannot join. BAd Company is definately more polished, and very good, similar gameplay with many servers.
Gears of War is really a third person shooter, but certainly very fun.
L4D is certainly very ammusing. It shines when palying with 4 others, especially on the hardest difficulty. Valve certainly makes good games, but I wonder if their engine is getting a little old.
The problem with all these games is that the people who are left are truely experienced players. They know the maps, the setups, etc, and you will just end up dieing every few seconds *cough CoD*. Halo at least attempts to matchmake base on trueskill rating, so you will be matched with similar 'Newbs'. Even though there are aliens, ODST might be the game you want to get as you play as a marine, not a super soldier (spartan).

I've run across several women who bought a 360 solely for L4D. Only reasonable explanation is Oprah was pimping the game.
dobieck1 09-09-09, 04:52 PM Watch out for Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. That looks promising as well. More "realistic" than the COD franchise, but its still a video game. Drops next month.
spinoza_43221 09-10-09, 07:38 AM Shadowrun and Transformers Revenge of the Fallen both have Demo's that offer online multiplayer play. Download them for free and check them out.
SAVholic 09-11-09, 12:27 AM nobody mention "The orange box".... HLF2 was a good game IMO
darklordjames 09-11-09, 01:47 AM If you don't already have The Orange Box, then you need to go outside and smash your damn 360. You don't deserve it. :)
FEAR is reasonably good for a single player blast, mix of realistic and more scifi type weapons but the AI on the bad guys is good. The supernatural stuff isn't really much of an issue in the actual combat.

I mentioned TF2 as part of Orange box above, but agreed, Hl2 and parts 1 and 2 are great, along with portal as well. Again, the best deal of any game so far. For the current price, as above mentioned, almost a shame that it is not part of every Xbox owners library. I have been getting into TF2 'again'. The game is so fun, and all the quirky details are so funny (from screaming medic, to all the different taunts based on what weapon you are holding, etc, the different accents for each character). Its amazing that with so many different classes, the game is 'pretty' balanced (with some minor caveats). Also if you have not downloaded all the 'Meet the .... sniper, soldier, heavy, etc' you really should (I think there are 5 of them, and all are free,), pretty funny snipits of each character, from marketplace, and they are free of course.
Here I will make it easy for you: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/media/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8024541080f/
The others can be found on youtube (spy, scout, medic, sentry). which for som reason have not been put on marketplace yet. The spy is pretty funny : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnuYi-nzE90
beach scrub 09-12-09, 02:09 PM forget FPS's, overrated... Viva Pinata is where it's at for multiplaya. pretty heated battles there.
for real despite its age COD 4 is top notch. R6V 1&2 are fun with a group you know.
Anthony Cler 09-12-09, 05:45 PM check out battlefield 1943 $15, battlefield 2 $20 battlefield bad company $20

Yeah, what he said. Battlefield Bad Company is an outstanding value at $19.99 on the marketplace. I've gotten way more than $60 worth of value out of my copy.
Big maps, lots of vehicles, destructible environments, emphasis on teamwork and fun, fun and more fun!
The single player campaign's not bad either.
