View Full Version : "The Postman" Impressions
tkbryant 09-09-09, 03:04 PM Not a total review...just checked out a few scenes. Will watch sometime later this weekend. The first few scenes were really soft looking, shot out of focus perhaps? Colors are very muted which I was expecting...it is post apocalypse after all. Later scenes tended to be more bright and had slightly more color with more depth as well. Bitrate jumped all around....some scenes had highs of 38-40, others low teens. I would say average was around 20-25. The TrueHD track sounded ok, no issues. I'm assuming this is a BD-50. No way they could cram a 3 hour movie with TrueHD on a BD-25 with those kind of bit-rates.
First impressions were weak but other later scenes looked quite good.
robertc88 09-09-09, 03:42 PM Yet another catalog title my local BV stores didn't get when I checked yesterday.
I'll have to wait for Netflix now. Thanks for the initial impression!
Fry's didn't have this, I notice Amazon says this will be in stock on Friday, wonder if it's just a late ship from production or wherever.
Would love to see some comparison shop to see if The Postman delivers (rim shot). I can do this all day...
tkbryant 09-09-09, 11:04 PM Ordered my copy on Sun night from Amazon...was delivered this morning.
Bachelor 09-09-09, 11:24 PM The dvd was plagued with EE and compression artifacts everywhere. I am looking to replace the dvd soon. Any special features?

Exact same ones from the DVD, no more, no less.
SCHNEEDOO 09-10-09, 10:24 PM I watched about a third of the movie and I have to say the TrueHD soundtrack is excellent. The picture is very good, but I think some DNR was applied. Overall this is a huge upgrade from the DVD. I would have hoped for some special features like a commentary, but I'm still glad I made the purchase. This is the best this movie has looked, but I missed it in the theater so I can't comment on how it looked there. This movie is one of my guilty pleasures, its one movie were Costner's wooden delivery actually works to the films advantage. I feel that the theatrical reviews were misguided. To each his own I guess. If you haven't seen this movie don't be surprised if you like it.
PRO-630HD 09-10-09, 10:52 PM I didn't expect too like it from the reviews either, but thoroughly enjoyed it.
whitestang06 09-12-09, 05:18 PM I managed to find a 720p sample video. Based on how it looks, I can say that I'll definitely be picking this one up, soon. Took a couple screenshots from it.

Tried to watch the disk...
One thing is certain: the PQ is excellent...mild grain, highly detailed and often 3D(ish).
SQ is outstanding as well.
Too bad the movie itself is crap...
The movie was very long running time and the important was this film repeated the story line with Waterworld, the same Kevin Costner, different locations.I still don't know why WB gave the big budget for this Postman? and it was flopped.
eapleitez 09-14-09, 02:38 AM This is probably my 2nd favorite Costner movie, behind Dances w/ Wolves. Hearing the reports on PQ, I will most definitely upgrade from my DVD.

Flop is probably a gentle word in this case. It was pulled from the theaters about a week or two after it's release. Waterworld was a masterpiece compared to this.
I actually liked this movie. When I went to the theater to see it, there may have been a dozen people. Everyone that was there seemed to like it. I especially liked Tom Petty's role. Not sure if there has been another movie where there was a character like his. Those that have seen the film know what I mean. Have the blu-ray on order.
gschrock 09-14-09, 11:56 AM It was an adequate movie, and I'll probably pick it up at some point. The book it's based on is far better though.
PRO-630HD 09-15-09, 09:41 PM OK folks, this is one stunning transfer for a catalog title! The detail is exceptional. $12.99 at BB and I would swear they redid the transfer, but I doubt it. After the spring and summer with mostly crap catalog transfers the fall is getting flooded with great looking older films. Kudos to Warner!
Going to try to watch this tomorrow, the screen caps posted already look great even at 720. Picked this up Sunday at BB for $13, but the wife got in a Firefly mood, so... 14 episodes and then Serenity... Postman tomorrow if all goes according to plan.
Kram Sacul 09-16-09, 12:37 AM Ironic and very telling that The Postman would get an amazing presentation on BD and an Oscar winner like Gladiator gets... basically crap on a stick. Warner Bros has made some blunders in the past but they really do seem to treat their catalog titles with respect instead of slapping a POS transfer on a disc. Paramount and Universal on the other hand...

There is NO substitute for competence.;)
wp34gsh 09-29-09, 12:13 PM I just watched this the other day and ti seemed to me that in the second half the movie that from time to time the picture would jump. Normally i would suspect that maybe the player was getting hot, but i was picking up from where i left off the day before so i wouldnt think the platyer was overly hot
has anyone else noticed the picute jump, its not a lot but i did notice abuot five times it did this
