The THX Optimode, if this is what you are referring to, does not have window patterns to measure and adjust gray scale. THX Optimode will assist you with adjusting contrast, brightness, color, and tint. You will find that a test disc, such as DVE, will offer many more patterns to adjust and evaluate your display.

If you are not doing greyscale....or even if you are....I personally recommend using the THX for Color, Tint, Sharpness, Contrast Brightness.

It is easier to use and to me produces better more defined results. What I mean is that No matter how you do it the results are always the same. I find that DVE I can tweak this that and or the other thing on thier patters and come up with a different calibtration everytime.

Then I would use DVE to just look things over and then for greyscale If I were doing greyscale.

Each time I caqlibrate I like DVE less and less and less.

Most recently I use the THX for like I said the basics and then use some custom patterns rather than the DVE.

In the end it seems I paid 25 bucks for a filter lol.

If you are going to do service menu stuff then I think DVE has more worth.

Technically, the optimode results are only supposed to be applicable to the movie on the same disc. Not meant as a replacement for a real test disc. This means that different optimodes on different movie discs may yield different results.

In practice ... they seem fairly consistent ... but there have been exceptions.

That I didnt know. I did check three movies that had them when I decided to use them. All three had exactly the same patterns which mind you are the same standard colors used in DVE for color adjust and hue. brightness and contrast.

I believe the better results are yielded form how light or dark the overall patterns are. With all the auto adjusting TV's do I believe the patterns on the THX yield a better result.

I havent witnesses anything that tells me they use different patterns for different movies. In fact this goes against everythign that THX stands for.

Im sorry but the comment is supposition without proof and without a specific example of movie supports no fact just a possible distaste for THX.
