anyone get this? i don't play pc games and the first tower defense game i played was on the ipod touch, but since then i've finished over 10 on the ipod, a platform where the genre has flourished. so i guess i'm an experienced player. and i can say confidently that Defense Grid is a great TD game. it's hard to say what the learning curve would be for a beginner, but i find it not-too-difficult to get the gold star on each map (i'm up to the second last one on Awakening), in that i can pretty much do it within a couple starts, granted the going-back-to-save-points is a great feature that lets you experiment.

it's a great balance of fun+difficulty, and there's nothing annoying about it :) graphics are very, very good. gameplay has good depth with a relatively large assortment of towers.

since this game is called "the awakening", i eagerly await any sequels. hopefully this game does well and spawns more TD games, i like HD TD when they're this good.

If you don't shell out ten bucks for this, then you're stupid!

I can't believe that it's half the price of the PC version and just as good. Worth every penny.

How do the controls work with the controller? I've played plenty on PC and a few on my Storm (touchscreen works great), that would be the only thing holding me back.

I haven't had a single issue with the controls. Why not try the demo?

Ya, I will tonight probably, I didn't know the game was out yet.

I agree. This game is some excellent tower defense. I am also a tower defense noob, and as such, it gets difficult around level 7 or 8. I'm a little stuck at the moment, purely because I refuse to let even a single orb get away. :)

Picked this one up today. Great so far and don't worry darklordjames once you let the first one get by and keep going it becomes less painful as the next ones get by. :p

I picked this one up too... great to play a level for 15 to 20 minutes. Nicely done.

This game is the poop, even if I can't make heads or tails of the Borderlands maps.

I'm really enjoying DG. I've got Gold Medals on most of the levels but some of them are tough, and I still need to try the Borderlands levels.

I've played this demo about three times now and I'm really enjoying the gameplay. It reminds me of that old laser/mirrors/splitters game, but way better because it has guns and tesla coils. :D I guess I'm gonna drop the $10 to unlock the full game soon.

What are the challenge levels after the story mode? Just single maps that you have to defeat?

NoThru22
10-11-09, 03:06 PM
The challenge levels are just the same level with harder aliens, then there are also modifiers like you can only use green towers, a certain number of towers, or even poison core, which is only one core and it will kill any aliens that it touches outside of the reactor (meaning if a small alien grabs it, who is being followed by ten other small aliens, and runs away and you kill the small alien, the poison core will kill all the other small aliens it touches until it gets back, and you don't get the resources for them, making it hard to get gold.)

This game is completely worth the $10/800MSP it costs to unlock the full version. Even better, the demo/trial version really gives you the feel for the gameplay so you'll know for sure whether you like this game or not with it.

For the people that like this game I was surprised to find a full port of PC game of similar caliber (though not quite) called Sol Survivor in the Xbox Live Indie games. The only issue that I have with it is the fact that it costs $10 but doesn't offer any achievements, but it has the best graphics I've seen in an Indie game.

I just bought South Park but between the two of them, it's not even close. Defense Grid is my favorite Tower Defense game and I'm obsessed with them. 7 of the 13 downloadable games I have on my PSP are Tower Defense. I've downloaded the garbage (and good) Tower Defense games in the Xbox Live Indie Games.

I picked this up yesterday when I saw Major Nelson's post on the sale. Played it for a while and for 5 bucks it seems like a steal.

you have to start following the Major Nelson blog. He posted easily a week or longer ago that Defense Grid was going to be one of the sale items.

loving the sale and picked up DG myself. Just been waiting for this price drop since release and working at my back log in the meantime.

Love this game! Just completed the story mode. Finished with all Silver medals and quite a few Gold. :) I was going to buy this anyway, but since it was 1/2 off, I got South Park as well...and I only used up 800 of my 16,000 MS points. Thanks, K-Mart! :D

When did the title update that allows you to score double the previous amount of points come out?

I was shocked when I fired it up last night to find that a friend that just purchased this was systematically obliterating my high scores. I'm playing through again to get my share of the double-points. :)

Tried playing it, only on lvl 3 or so though. Good fun thus far, the 3d-ness is neat (typically I played TD games on Warcraft 3).

I sorta like the original Wintermaul-style TD more where essentially there's an entry point and and exit point and it's a straight line between them and you built towers in such a way as to redirect traffic to make it take the longest possible time for them to get from point A to point B, usually a stacking zig-zag. You actually put your towers IN their path and change how they move, not just next to their path. Maybe there'll be more of this later on in the game (it said in the instructions that if you completely block their path they'll destroy your towers, so that sounds promising).

Grah! Going back and trying to get Gold on every level. What a PITA! Typically, I end up missing the mark by a mere 100 points. :( You really, really have to strategize if you're doing this. Be prepared!

Still, this gives the game excellent replay value. :)

Don't worry there are a number of levels just as you describe where you are dictating path. No destroying towers that I'm aware of, they will just walk through them if they have no other clear path.

Hell, I never had too much of a problem with the shape their path levels in the main campaign but the bonus add-on missions are so $*#*(ing complicated in that respect that I haven't even finished most of them.

having issues with the first borderlands map.... around wave 22... any suggestions?

the basic jist of that one is to completely surround the base except for the top left part and make them enter there. Have a couple temporals and maybe a command post maxed for increased resources....if you do the surround method I think it's pretty straight forward....

formulanerd
04-11-10, 05:56 PM
that was my first idea, i tried two or three times with that strat... it's always that wave of shield guys (right before turtles and bashers) that get me, and i have 90% gun and cannon, which is supposed to be best against shields.

i had it so that everyone had to cross a half circle, and then back (basically a full map rotation) before they could exit.... same story.

coyote_5
04-11-10, 08:30 PM
ring the whole thing with guns, get the ones near the entrance and on the left side maxed out pretty quick, then have an entire line of cannons on the right side

Not exactly to scale with placement and actual # of weapons, but you get the idea. It will work.

Crap, well, it doesn't keep my formatting with spaces. @*$%!

shift the guns and cannons over to the right to imagine the cores in the middle.

Nah, too many missile towers for this map. They have to make two passes by the tower before they go to the base. *shrug*

Can't wait for the new maps though, that's awesome!

Any opinions on the first pair?

The first map was pretty challenging for me but I was able to get a gold medal (with many points to spare) on the open one first try.

Definitely worth the price. I just wish there were more maps coming. I would gladly have paid $15 for 20 new maps.

This is unreal. Tons of PC games that are also out for XBLA have gotten Portal themed DLC (like Bastian and Dungeon Defenders, among others I am forgetting) but this is the first time that it has made it the 360 as well. 8 new missions for 5 bucks and a cameo by Glados coming in two weeks!

Well, I tried the demo of this yesterday, and after the first level, I bought the game. It's that good. I played through the entire Awakening campaign, and enjoyed it, but I still got to go back and play some over again to get higher medals. Also, I can't wait to try out some of the challenge modes, especially the grinder ones.

Did anyone else find the last level way too easy? I just blocked one way and made them merge and I had no problem at all taking them down. The only ones to make it to my core were the bosses, but they didn't last long afterward.
