Found a copy of TCM(2003) out a few weeks early yesterday and grabbed it. Watched it last night and was very happy with the AV quality. I did not notice any DNR or EE. I wasn't sure if it was going to have that slightly soft Warner look, but I can happily report that at least to my eyes, it looked fantastic. Detail was superb (Great for J. Biel, gross for the gore). I didn't have the TrueHD cranked, but it sounded great as well.

Highly recommended!

I am also VERY pleased! I think it looks excellent! It sure blows DVD version out of the water. Talk about a detailed picture, this is sharp as a tack! It has a nice fine grain with no use of DNR, EE or print damage from what I can see. My only complaint would be the blacks could be more inky but my DVD copy also has this look... I'm fine with that as it appears to be the director's intented look and you make out a good deal of shadow detail. Warner did a great job with this one which is something I CAN NOT say often about their encodes! The video compression seems great, I seen the VC-1 encode maxing out at 44.9 mbps! It defaults to TrueHD and even has the PS3 movie icon thingamajob haha :D

Sound was great as well IMO.

I think this movie was the best remake horror film from M
Bay and Marcus Dispel.BTW,The New Friday The 13 th was not so good.I will wait for the new Nightmare on ELM street next year.

I really hope so, it's one of my favorite horror movies ever.

But coming from Warner / New Line (with the exception of HTWWW and Shoot Em' Up), I don't think I have seen any other title that wasn't DNRed or filtered.

Reminds me of...

Bus Driver: That Veronica Vaughn is one piece of ass, I know from experience dude. If you know what I mean.
Billy Madison: No, you don't.
Bus Driver: Well, not me personally but a guy I know. Him and her *got it on*. Wooo-eee!
Billy Madison: No, they didn't.
Bus Driver: No, no, no they didn't. But you could imagine what it'd be like if they did, right...? Everybody on, good, great, grand, wonderful.

Bus Driver: No yelling on the bus!

I guess my post did sound like the start of something like that (although I really have been in the radiant magical glow of her otherworldly presence a few times- yes it's true, all such creatures really DO cast off a magical, otherworldly glow that bathes them in the light of the gods everywhere they go as they are trailed by a cadre of small forest creatures hopping and fluttering about....). OK, it's late and I'm getting ridiculous.

Man does this film like great! I was mesmerized by the PQ while viewing with my Samsung 40" LCD which cannot hold a candle to lots of the displays used to view BDs here.

The movie? I really really liked it. I put it in my queue knowing I could just shut it off if it was too gory and the story totally ridiculous but that wasn't the case IMHO. I don't want to ruin anything so that's all I say about that, it was well done as far is I'm concerned.

Give it a shot! At worst you'll have great PQ throughout and a beautiful girl to look at!

I love the film. I'll get it for sure. As for the beautiful girl... well, she really was beautiful in TCM, but of course she had to fill some pointless plastic surgery needs since, and it's certainly not for the better:o

Gorgeous, beautiful in TCM:

Thank you stumblad! ;)

Definately the best catalog from New Line yet, but it could use some improvements in compression.

Actually I really don't get these guys, the disc is just a little over 27gb and features a 23mbps AVBR. Why not just crank it up to mid 30ies, ensure quality and fill up the disc. It's not like it would be costing more.

This thing with Warner and low bitrate is going beyond reason.

I completely agree. I'm starting to hate Warner as much at MGM. MGM for having all their MPEG2 releases still.

Also, where is the 6.1/7.1 track?! :(

I still ordered it, I love the movie. Can't pass up $9.99.

I agree with AlexBC that bit-rate boost would help. After seeing Twilight, Halloween (Zombie), Children of the Corn, and a few other really high bit-rate titles, it's obvious that it helps.

I wont bring it up in the Wizard of Oz thread, but I think that could've used a bump as well. In xylon's comparison thread, I posted a comparison of the BD to a restoration image... Perhaps there are other factors involved, but the restoration image looked better at a lower resolution than the BD.

I will say this however... If Wrong Turn (or even the Girl next door) were the Warner release, and Texas Chainsaw were a Fox release, Warner would get more hell for it :)

That's right, the titles you mentioned look great.

I agree with that as well.

Some professional compressionists have said it before, and I think by what we can see in practice, 25mbps is the sweet spot for AVC and VC-1. Only above that we start to get really efficient encodes.

I will say this however... If Wrong Turn (or even the Girl next door) were the Warner release, and Texas Chainsaw were a Fox release, Warner would get more hell for it :)

Yeah... maybe. But this is the reputation they've build for themselves. It's not like it's something out of the blue that people started picking on Warner.

Wrong Turn and the Girl Next Door are terrible, but FOX has shown on many other ocasions, and maybe we could also put on more important titles, that they can deliver great work.

From the WB part, aside from a handfull of titles (including animation), new transfers and great authoring is not what you're gonna find. Not even on many of their big guns and day-and-date titles. The latter is something that most other studios and independent labels out there seems to be doing right. Universal and Magnolia are the others that seem to be dropping the ball IMO.

Uhhhh, the movie was pretty good too.

Well, I finally watched the movie (flipped thru it before) , and I have to say, I'm a little more negative towards the encode now. One issue was black level.. It was never truly black, and most of the times dark gray. Not sure if this was intent, but in some of the dark scenes, it seemed like we would've been able to see more in the shadows had it not been. Since it's possible this was intended, it's not a major gripe...

The other issue was macroblocking... There was a lot of it in some of the extra dark scenes. I didnt want to keep pausing the movie because my wife was watching it with me, but the two times i checked, the bit rate was around 20 which should probably be adequate to prevent some of what I was seeing. I'll check out more before forming my overall opinion, but I'm a bit disappointed that this went by through QA.

Either way, the movie was just as good seeing it 4-5 yrs later. I actually forgot how different it is from the original. They basically paid their respects to it, and in some ways this could even be considered another TCM sequel. There were some good scare moments and this wasnt very gory (neither was the original). And man, did Jessica Biel look incredible in this...words can't describe it! :)

I just finished The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003 remake and I have to say, especially to all the purists out there that this was a great movie!
This has got to be in the best of the best for bluray transfers... picture was just stunning and the movie probably didn't have me this tense in the theater.

On the extras which I never watch but decided to tonight the alternate beginning and ending were both lame and I'm glad they were scrapped but th alternate Morga death had that extra blood the scene was just aching for so they should have left that one in imo. I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed the Featurette on Ed Gein... downright macabre and a grim look into his real life, even real photos of one of his victims strung up be her feet all hollowed out and no head... just incomprehensible!

Got the UK disc of this yesterday. Just a heads up that it's not a dupe of the US disc as I'd expected, and possibly even an AV upgrade. Video is AVC not VC1, and audio is DTS-MA instead of TrueHD. All the extras are included and it's region B coded.

You've got me curious now. The US disc has bad black levels IMO. I wasnt sure if this was intended, but it was my biggest complaint. The new Friday the 13th and Freddy vs Jason had much deeper blacks. Neither were as good as this.

Do you know of any existing screenshots?

There may be an issue with the black levels in the US disc? Hmmm... This has me curious now. I'll have to pop it in and compare it to my DVD copy. For what it's worth, I didn't notice any issues when I demo'd a few scenes when I first got the disc. Maybe my memory is incorrect, though.

If i have time i'll post a shot of Freddy v Jason and then TCM 2003. Both movies came out in 2003.. both were done by new line/warner... both are better than average transfers for warner... but the black level in TCM seems off. Though it very well may be intentional. I have no clue.

IIRC when I watched the special features, the director (or whoever) said the black level is intentional.

Makes sense... the color palette was so heavily saturated in sepia tones having dirty blacks seems consistent.

This UK version also got me curious.

Talking about the genre, I recently saw the Paramount international (Europe/Brazil/Japan) version for the new Friday The 13th and as expected it's a wash over the US New Line/Warner version. None of their usual filtering and bad compression that bugs me so much.

The black levels on the UK disc are fairly washed out too. They lean towards brown or grey than black. It's the intended look of the film itself, however.
