I have been self calibrating my new LG 60PS11 plasma TV, using an Eye One Display LT meter and the AVS HD 709 test patterns disc. I can understand how to adjust most settings on my TV, but on the issue of color gamut, I am a bit lost and want to get you opinion. When I set my TV's white balance to warm (which does get me close to D65 white by the way), I have a menu option which allows me to toggle the TV between having a wide or standard color gamut. I plan to then use the available System Color and Tint Controls and Individual Color and Tint settings for the primaries and secondaries in the CMS to tweak the way the colors look even further. The control settings I end up with are obviously going to be different based on my choice of gamut to begin with (e.g., based on the Y reading of red, my System Color needs to be set at 43% if I select wide, but 54% if I select standard).
Based the fact that I will be using this display only for Blu-Ray and Cable HDTV (and may be a rare session of Xbox360 or PS3 gaming) and never plan to hook it up to a computer, is there any benefit in me starting off by selecting either gamut? Is the calibrated end result going to look nearly the same whether I start with one or the other option, since I am trying to tweak everything to the same Rec 709 color standard?
