I had to send my UP5000 player for replacing the Dirve Unit gone bad last month SamSung bill me 168.00 shipping included both way because my unit is not cover under warranty. Before I make futher decision whether to repair or throw away a obsolete product I got a loaner from a friend this loaner is Panasonic 605K CostCo sell it for 169.00.

Last 4 weeks living with the Pan 605K and watching all BD movie and SD DVD on it I'm feeling there are whole lot of SOMETHING that I had missed from SamSung UP5000:

1. Picture quality from the Samsung is far superior both in BD and SD
2. Sound quality have more bass, clearer and chanel separation way better. I have only 5.1 system but with high quality Surround Proc/Amp/Speaker matching and correctly configured I'm so happy with what I have.

I dont care about Live BD or other features with the new BD movie gimmicks, I'm old fashion I just need nice picture and good sound.

My Samsung arrived yesterday. Normal life is back.

Im not giving up my UP5000 just yet.......

I had both at home and have to disagree with all of your observations. PQ is mostly identical. 5K may have a slight advantage on DVDs but I rarely watch DVDs. Sound, from HDMI bitstreamed, won't have any difference either because that's my receiver's job, not player's.

BD60/605 is slower in loading Java discs than 5k but otherwise it is a better BD player than 5k. Not to mentioned the ability to decode DTS-HD.

One thing to remember for all Panasonic BD players, you have to disable secondary audio in the setup menu in order to get full quality lossless audio out. Otherwise, all audio will be downmixed into lossy DD or DTS.

I only keep my 5K for HD DVD purpose.

Of course but some prefer not to meddle with the innards of their electronics.

Oh yes please GoGadget would love the service manual. Mine just died :( and I really miss it. I had a look inside, but front panel lights up like a christmas tree and doesn't bode well, but narrowing down to a particular area would be worthwhile for me.

Thanks Michael

^Could be nothing more than a capacitor problem ;)And that would be an easy fix, but don't go dinkin' around inside that unit if you don't know what you're doing.
