View Full Version : DisneyUpgrade2Blu Coming Soon
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3404
...Disney will also launch the website DisneyUpgrade2Blu where owners of Disney DVDs can receive a $10 discount when they upgrade to Blu-ray. The first participating title on the website will be 'Snow White', but many catalog titles will be added in the weeks following its release. Panasonic is also expected to announced their own incentives program soon. ...
If only this would have happened a year or so ago. Still I think this is good for consumers (especially considering the astronomic MSRPs that Disney is putting on their discs due to the price increase from adding a DVD and Digital Copy to all of their movies). I would hope that Pixar titles would be included in this as well. Fingers are crossed!
rdgrimes 09-12-09, 12:43 PM $10 discount from MSRP is not that hard to obtain elsewhere. IMHO they need to do better than this.
colombianlove41 09-12-09, 12:48 PM i hope!
16x9enhanced 09-12-09, 12:50 PM if you have to cut off anything from the sleeves I'll pass.
That's usually the case.
no thanks.
GizmoDVD 09-12-09, 01:15 PM So they raises prices $10-$15 and provide a $10 off coupon to owners of previous DVDs if they cut the UPCs out (so they can't be resold legally). Awesome move.

$10 is a LOT better than 10%.
ToEhrIsHuman 09-12-09, 02:04 PM i'm still irritated that they wouldn't accept my PoP for the original 'Sleeping Beauty' DVD release for the BD upgrade...they only accepted the new version. What kind of upgrade would that be, and who would buy the DVD only to buy the BD that already comes with the DVD a couple months later anyhow?

Well, obviously I meant $10, not 10%. How come you didn't know that? ;)

Stinky-Dinkins 09-12-09, 03:30 PM 10 dollars plus shipping is too much, especially if they're requiring the old disc itself and not just the UPC.
5 dollars would be about the max for me.
If it's like the Snow White deal, you enter the UPC code of the DVD at disneymovierewards.com and print out a $10 off coupon and take it to the store of your choice. So the $10 will be deducted from the price of the DVD not the MSRP. I'm hoping the next titles in line will be the same.
It at least help recuperate some of the added cost Disney passed on to us by adding a DVD/Digital copy in the blu-ray package. It seems pointless to add a DVD copy in a blu-ray package for a catalog title. Honestly, any Disney fan who watches Monsters Inc etc is not going to need another DVD! That movie already came with two DVDs(one Wide Screen and one Full Screen)! Do we really need a third DVD of the movie?
Morpheo 09-12-09, 09:47 PM "A lot of consumers are buying the combo packs," said Maehara, "but they are not fully understanding how to use them."
:rolleyes:Even my daughter understands how a digital copy works.
Stinky-Dinkins 09-13-09, 02:02 AM whats the purpose of the digital copy? i have no use for it so i dont even know what its for. could you explain a little?
You have no use for it?
Then for you (me, and most everyone else) it's that they include a cheap assed digital copy so that they can charge an above-board premium for the Blu Ray.
Otherwise it's so you can copy it to something like and iPod.
We love our Digital Copies! Being able to watch a movie anywhere on my iTOUCH is awesome. Plus I can play it on any tv we come across...

what format are these digital copies? mp4? how can you play it on any tv you come across?

Yes. Besides, you have the ability on any iPhone, iPod Touch, and on some recent Nano models to output video to a TV, via a special component cable from Apple. I'm talking about Apple because I've always owned Macs, I know DCs work exactly the same on the PC side, but I'm not familiar enough with Windows and PCs to tell.
I usually import all my digital copies in iTunes on my mac, and then I copy some of them to my iPhone when I travel for example. The purpose of the digital copies has nothing to do with the HT and HD experience, but I really like them.
Correct me if I'm wrong - but this promotion is a coupon and NOT a rebate? That leaves out those of us who preorder online - which I would imagine is a good many of us on this forum.
mistermoravec 09-13-09, 12:29 PM I understand this is not the optimal place to ask this...but since the digital copies issue came up...
I have about 70 of these digital copies saved on my laptop...I will be upgrading to windows 7 64 bit when it comes out so I will have to do a clean install...Is there anyway of backing up the licenses or will the playability of these files be gone forever? if so...digital copies are dumb.

Once you reauthorize iTunes with your account info, the files will play normally. Your computer just need to be authorized to play them.

My guess they are very likely to be coupons. If it were a rebate they would have stated something like "receive $10 back".
And yes, my guess is you probably couldn't use the coupon codes on Amazon. I used to buy my disks from Amazon, but quite often they end up price matching local stores on new releases. So while some may save tax on Amazon, you also lose the ability to use coupons and such by ordering online. :(
mike171979 09-14-09, 03:26 AM People who complain about Disney's Bluray pricing just are not getting it.
Disney offers $10 coupons for ALL NEW RELEASES
I just printed out one for Snow White, and I just used one for Bolt and EARTH.
Disney printable $10 coupons are EVERYWHERE ONLINE!!!!!
Earth and Bolt have MSRPs of $44.99
SO THE F WHAT!!!!
Best Buy had them $24.99 each on sale during their release week.
With the $10 off coupon, that makes ALL NEW DISNEY RELEASES $14.99
Go ahead, just try to complain about having to print out the coupon, but no one will listen.

Disney offers $10 coupons for ALL NEW RELEASES...
The Pixar movies have yet to be included in these deals. I also got Race to Witch Mountain with the $10 off as well however the best I've seen A Bug's Life go for was around $25 or $28. Since then Disney raised the MSRPs and w/o the $10 off coupons both Monster's Inc and Up are pretty expensive.

I don't have Itunes installed. I put them on my computer so I could stream them via media center...can I install itunes and do this retroactively?

I guess so. But I don't how it works with media center... Where/when do you need to enter the code for the digital copy? I'm surprised you can access them without proper authorization. Which means you never have to enter any license? Which also means you can bypass the DRM?... Nice:) In any case I would just backup the files on a separate disk, clean install Windows 7 on the laptop, and copy them back...
Here's what I must do each time I copy the DC to my computer (Mac): I insert the disc, iTunes gives me the redeem code screen, I enter my Apple/iTunes ID, enter the code, then the file is authorized. It can then play on any computer authorized with my account information (5 max, my iPhone doesn't count, since it can't be synch'd with any other computer than mine).

They don't need to do a thing.
Plenty of us have double dipped on DVD's let alone the change to HD. It's the price you pay for this hobby.
Offering this, and the fact that they can be used on any Disney title is great PR move by them, and a pretty good deal for the consumer IMO.

This is why I don't have any Apple products. The DRM is fricken ridiculous. My Toshiba Gigabeat holds all my digital copies and mp3's DRM free.
mistermoravec 09-17-09, 01:44 AM I still need the license. I insert the disc a prompt comes up, I enter the code, it downloads the license then the file can be played from the disc or the computer...but if I do a clean upgrade of windows I'm sure all of my licenses will be lost...as far as I know the files on the disc CANNOT be played without a license

I don't know how it works outside of iTunes... but iTunes is supposed to keep track of your licenses for things you buy... such that if you accidentally delete something that you bought you are supposed to be able to reacquire it.
I've not tested the theory... but had always been under the impression that anything bought through iTunes (including redeeming free digital copies) was a safeguard in that respect.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on this one, so I'll tell you want I know (and do):
1) Back-up the actual mp4/m4v file to SOMETHING (hard drive/disk/whatever)
2) Once you've "authorized" it via iTunes, you don't have to worry about any licenses, etc.: you will be able to reload/reuse it once you validate your iTunes install/account
The important thing is to KEEP THE FILE YOU ORIGINALLY DOWNLOADED. DRM is a necessary evil here: as long as you keep all your (family) iPods on the same account, you can at least share the downloads within your family.
mistermoravec 09-17-09, 08:52 PM thanks guys for your help...it seems like everything hinges on the install of itunes...which I don't have.
