Pio 1150 calibration

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just came back from Best Buy where they were running a special for calibration. They are doing it for about 30% off the normal rate.

Any thoughts on their service compared to others on this forum? I will admit that money is a factor.

When they get here, is there anything specific I should be asking for or looking for?

I will say, that I do not even know exactly what to expect, and I have read the posts here about the dramatic difference it makes.

Does anyone have experience with the Best Buy Service? The price was so good, it seemed crazy not to take advantage of it.

I really want to maximize my experience with this TV, and feel that i am not doing so if it is not calibrated.

Thx, Dave

just like any other service in the world, there are the good and the bad. find out who the tech would be a give him a call. ask some basic questions. if he seems like he knows what hes doing, give it a shot. Those sets are fairly easy to work on, so its kinda hard to screw things up

PS if you do a search (or just scroll down a bit) there are 20945209 threads about this

There are TONS of posts about results from BB calibrations on AVS - hard to miss them actually. There are even some entire threads here and there discussing results. From what I've read, probably 15%-20% who got a BB calibration think they got a real calibration - no way to know for sure though since those people have no way of verifying whether their displays are really more accurate than before or simply different. My guess would be that perhaps 1/2 to 1/3 of those "calibrations" were really worth anything (so that puts you down into the 5%-10% range for actual good calibrations). A rather staggering number got nothing remotely resembling calibration - somebody shows up with a disc, puts it in the disc player, adjusts the user menu controls and calls that "calibration" - and they don't even do THAT right... they leave the displays in poor video modes with incorrect settings all over the place. Some get "calibrations" that are clearly so bad the TV is messed up and the techs rarely have made any notes about the original settings so they can't even put the TV back to factory defaults. BB has actually REPLACED TVs because of that bit of stupidity. People report the calibration took 1 hour (sometimes less) up to maybe 90 minutes. I can barely get my equipment setup and interview the customer about viewing habits and goals for the calibration in that amount of time (well, I can get a little more done than that, but not a lot) - "real" calibrations are more likely to take 3-4 hours and will include before and after results as well as documented before and after settings.

Before committing to a BB calibration, you should do some research on AVS and see if you come away feeling confident they will do a good job for you or not.
