View Full Version : Question for all the 120gb owners out there

I'm still rocking my launch day HD, the good old 20 gigger.

Like most people with a 20gb HD, mine has been full for quite some time now. It's come to the point that I can't even delete anything anymore, since most of the stuff that's taking up the space are map packs, game add-ons, etc. I've got a whopping 1.4 left, and because of it I can't even download some DLC stuff because it's over that size. I can't DL HD movies...you get the idea.

I've been holding off on getting the 120 drive by itself, or just going for the elite. Either way, I do need to upgrade my drive size.

I don't keep anything on my drive right now except for game DLC and saves. I delete all game trailers and demos (those that I can even download) right away. I'd love to install some of my games on my HD and not worry about the space.

The question I have though - is how are you guys with 120 gig drives doing right now for space? Do you have a good amount, or are yours filling up?

Thanks,

-JR

I am filling up because I download so many tv shows and install my games to the hardrive. Like any hardrive your going to eventually fill the space up. Not sure what trend your expecting from anybodies answers but it is all going to depend on what your lifestyle is. I delete what I don't need and move on. I like the 120gig for its space but it just more to delete eventually. No different than my terabytes I fill due to games and porn on my computer.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if I'm expecting much of a trend, I'm thinking that much like you said peoples lifestyle will vary, which will change the space they have on their HD. I'd still probably use the 120 how I do now, but I'm betting with the extra space I might start to DL other stuff (like TV show as you mentioned).

Hearing your example helps me, since it gives me a sense of how the drive can be utilized space wise. :)

My 120 Elite has tons of Rock Band and other DLC and still plenty of space. I do download games to the HD, but only leave the 3-4 I'm currently playing on there. It doesn't take too long to load one, so it's no problem to rotate them in and out depending on what I'm digging at the moment.

I'm doing fine on space with mine. I use my old 20gb primarily as a RockBand drive...keep all my DLC and the installed game on that and use the 120 for all other games and downloads. I keep the top 4 or 5 games I play installed and when cleaned up have 60 or 70 gb free at any given time.

I have a 20gig, 60gig,120gig and PS3 80gig. Talks of a 250gig is coming out I think overseas with a Forza 3 bundle next month when the game releases. I guess we will here somthing soon if this is true.

I have found that if you were to use up the 120GB drive, it is purely due to having stuff on it that you aren't using. Before wiping my drive last month and starting fresh, my drive was packed to the gills. I also had about 10 games installed to it, all of my DLC, all of my Arcade games, some video, and probably 15 demos that I hadn't gotten to on it.

After wiping the drive, I find that I jumped up to 60GB used real quick, but have been hovering at that point for quite a while. I ask myself if I really want to play a demo before downloading it, and I only keep about 5 games installed now. :)

I have less than 20 GB free in my 120 GB drive.

A couple of weeks I had around 5 GB free. I deleted some stuff I wasn't using anymore and that's why I have more now. But I still need to do a lot of cleaning. I'm sure there are a lot of videos there that need to be deleted and some demos too.

Thanks everyone, sounds like I'll go for the 120.

I like the sound of being able to have all of my DLC (for games) and arcade games on the drive without it filling up. I also like the idea of having a few games that you're currently playing on the HD.

Thanks again all!

Make sure that you're getting a real 120GB drive, and not some flashed-with-a-duplicate-serial piece of crap ebay special. That is, unless you are really looking forward to waking up one day and finding yourself banned from Live.

Yep, I'll be getting the real deal only! Do the 120 drives come with transfer cables? If not, I'll just call MS support.

Also, after the new update, if you are someone who installs your games to your harddrive, they now take up less space.

I have 120 GB with two games installed. I'm not so sure about that update.
I deleted the COD MW and Fable 2 installs, and reinstalled them. Fable 2 is over 7gb and COD MW2 is over 6GB, I think thats bigger then before.

I usally have some rented HD movies downloaded, way to many game trailers, 2-3 games installed and a bunch of demos and hover around 50-60gb free

I don't think you're looking at the correct information. Are you checking the total space used by these games on your hard drive? If so, this includes any downloadable content you've picked up. Based on your comments, I imagine you grabbed some of the Fable 2 downloadable content, and at least one of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare map packs? These do indeed use disk space, but this is independent of the install. The installs for these games do not use 6 or 7 GB, either pre-update or post-update.

Not to thread-jack, but how can you tell? I've been keeping my eye out on CL for a 120 GB drive, but definitely don't want to end up with an ebay special. I can't justify spending $150 on a new one.

It is priced cheaper than that at Amazon for you or anyone else interested.

I'm in the same boat in terms of having an original 20g HDD that's filling up fast.
I'm on the fence on getting a 60gb HDD, and requesting the transfer cable, or holding out hope that MS will lower the price on their 120GB to $99 for the XMas season. I don't feel like spending $150 for an overpriced 120gb HDD

I don't D/L movies, don't same pictures or music to the HDD. I usually delete demos that I stop playing, and the same with game videos. I'd probably use the space on the larger HDD for saving games directly to the HDD.

Anyone with a suggestion of which route to take for the HDD? 60gb? 120gb?

I've never had space issues with the 120 gig but I use mine mostly for XBLA, Saves and installing games on the hdd that I play often. I could see if one has to have all of the Rock Band DLC how more than the 120 would be needed eventuall. However for my usage the 120 is more than I will ever need; I just like the option of having the extra space over the 60 "just in case" I will never likely need anything any larger. The 60 would probably be fine if you don't keep alot of fluff and plan to only keep a few games installed since most saves don't really take up alot of space and most arcade games arent extremely large. The only limitation in that case is DLC such as Map Packs or the like. If MS ever goes the route of mandatory installs however the 60 gig may not be the best option.

Thats a good point and was my first thought for COD and Fablle 2 (DLC) but when I went into both games the installs were big.... I'll post exact sizes next time I'm on my 360

i've got about 97GB Free. Only real major DL is the RB 1 Disc, since I upgraded to RB 2.

Other than that, its all game saves. I don't download my games to the box, since its a waste of space. Since you gotta swap out discs anyway. And I didnt notice a difference in boot up speed enough to warrant the time to copy them to the HD.

The increase in loading speed should be able to be seen anywhere a game needs to load data, not just during startup. Hence, if a game has to load data from the DVD every time the player enters or exits certain areas (e.g. many of the open-world RPGs), having the game installed can help significantly, although these games do have their own caching in many cases which somewhat offsets the gain. In other genres, from my own personal experience, Viva Pinata is a title that benefits greatly from an install.

If you play a game frequently, and you have plenty of free space, why not have the game installed?

I was starting to reach the limit(with 30 gigs left free) and then I deleted 5 installed games(which all used the old less efficient game install tool). now I have 80 gigs free with 500 songs for rock band a few games still installed and a few dozen XBLA titles.

For an extra $165 you might as well pick up a Jasper Elite.

To also add it makes a huge noise differnce (installing games). My 360 arcade is for the most part quite with an installed game. Granted my surround or headphones to a good job of droning it out.

I could belive how loud the thing is the other day when I fired up Halo 3 solo.

I went and checked and Fable 2 is taking up 6.6Gb and I guess I deleted COD MW as it doesn't appear to be installed anymore, could have swore I reinstalled it.

I should point I had an Elite when they first came out, it RROD, then I bought prow/60gb (Christmas was coming and I wanted my little cousins to be able to game)
I use the arcade with the 120gb and gave the elite (when it came back from Microsoft) to my cousins with a 60GB

"Not to thread-jack, but how can you tell?"

The first indicator is if it actually says "120GB HDD" on the silver bit of the case. Modded 20GB drives only say "HDD".

If you are getting a drive off of craigslist, then it's modded.

Thanks. Looks like I'll stick with my 20 GB until I can find a cheaper replacement.

Not always the case. I have a non-MS 120gb drive that has 120GB HDD across the top. A better bet is to look at the bottom of the drive to see if all the serial #/bar coded stickers are in place. There are 2 or 3 white stickers with specific info about that drive on the legit drives. You should not find this on a duped drive.

If your American, and you bought it, in theory I believe forever. But I think we would need a lawyer to really know.

I like having the 120GB HDD. This gives me the fluff when I download movies I've rented. My 20GB is always on the brink of being filled up. Mostly due to games being installed on it.
