The gods have smiled upon us today....digitalbits is reporting that FOX is going to announce Moulin Rouge for release in the coming weeks. At last....one of my favorite movies of all time & still one of the best DVD releases ever is getting it's 1080p due. I had a feeling it would be soon after seeing a clip of it in FOX's new Blu-ray trailer attached to Wolverine.

I also enjoy this movie. If they do it right, it should be a great blu-ray.

One of the most bizarre movies I've ever seen....with incredibly good singing by the principals. Who know Obi Wan Kenobi had such a voice???!!

This movie was an orgasm for the eyes when I saw it in the theaters. I hope it is the same on BD.

We recently watched it again as I wanted to see how good the Oppo BDP-83 would upscale it and could not believe how good the DVD looked. The Blu-ray version has the potential to be reference material both visually and aurally. Cause the DTS track was no slouch either. I'm so excited....would be nice to have this around Christmas. I want it now now NOW!!!

I've grown to really like and appreciate this movie. Plus, it's always a go-to choice when a group can't decide on a film (during my wife's golf league movie nights).

I like Baz Luhrmann but I never watched this because I don't like Mcgregor for some reason...same reason I haven't seen Big Fish. I might have to finally see this once it hits Blu-ray.

Sweet! I remember seeing this on HBO-HD right after I got HD eight years ago and it was major eye candy even on a small HD CRT. Always wanted to see it again but it never appeared on HBO after that first wave of airings, and then when I got BR I found it was not yet available. It should be a trip off BR on the much bigger screen I've got now.

Yeah, someone offered me $200 back in the day, probably should have taken the offer--still in the shrink wrap, for that special viewing.
I was a bit apprehensive as I detest the Pop songs that were used, but, excellent execution, I loved it, helped by the fact they also included a track from Lamb, a favorite band of mine.

Little more difficult to do because of the motion blur in the shot and the sharpest frame is obscured a bit in the promo because of the fade shot they created for the promo:

The perfomances and song choices in this film are great. By far, my favorite Baz Luhrman film.

It looks very good, but a shame they didn't do a 4K scan of the original camera negative especially for this film. With the plethora of visual information the wide shot can't help but looking to struggle with the information present.

To reproduce all the work done already would be very expensive. All the efx vendors would have to redo all the work done. As well as the color timing and scanning.

I guess it is possible the OCN was re-scanned @ 4k but for all the composited shots they worked off the 2k completed file.

From what I can see on the screen. Digital remastering to be precise. Lurman talks about the fella that did the color grading and so forth but as well comparing screenshots to the dvd there isn't a tremendous amount of extra detail popping up and that is the first thing a good 4K scan is going to show and many shots just look plain soft.

The press release specifically said MR and Romeo+Juliet were remastered from the OCN, though it doesn't mention the resolution. This movie has a ton of visual effects and opticals that suffer from generation loss, but many of the shots also have tremendous detail, so I'm not really sure what your complaint here is. A 4K scan won't pick up detail that isn't there due to generation loss or because it wasn't laid down by the lens.

Whoever put together the special feature packages for these BDs of Moulin Rouge! and Romeo+Juliet needs to be beaten with a stick. Quite a lot of interesting material but most of it is window-boxed into a little postage stamp video inside a decorative 1080p static frame and the content is broken up into dozens of short little segments. Definitely still worthwhile to go through, but the process is slightly torturous. Ugh.

I think it looks fantastic, much better than I was expecting for some reason. Ralph Potts does a nice job of describing it in his review (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=19345017#post19345017).

Here is the BDInfo for anyone interested:

And also for Romeo+Juliet:

Both releases are region free.

I watched MR the other day and it looks pretty much perfect (except for the FX shots). The grain is rendered flawlessly and could easily be a 4K scan.

I'm starting to think that film as a capture medium hasn't progressed much in the last 10 years, because there's a bunch of BDs now of ~10 year old movies that easily look like they could have been shot yesterday. There's no reason an early 2000 big budget film should look poor (I'm looking at you Fellowship of the Ring).

msgohan

Both releases are region free.

And just like Alienses and Rocky Horror, the back covers say Region A. But Last of the Mohicans and Predators are locked so I guess there's no rhyme or reason.

Standard def inside a window-box? Why do so many reviews tout the extras as being in high-def?

Technically speaking, they are indeed encoded at 1.78:1 AVC 1080p24 - just that the video is not presented full width/height, but instead is in a small window surrounded by a decorative frame. To make things even more fun, these little video windows have interlacing comb artifacts baked in from the SD sources. Really, it would've been much nicer if they just kept them as 480i60 files at 4:3 or 16:9 as appropriate.

Here's a couple example featurette screenshots that hopefully make what I'm talking about clearer:

I don't think this should discourage anyone from picking up this release since the main feature presentation is really quite nice, I just found the implementation of the extras annoying.

Since I'm here, I might as well also post a link to some screen captures I took of the film itself:

I take everything I said bad about this title back. I have a button that changes the resolution on my remote and must have hit it by accident the other day so i was watching the movie in 480p. Detail was my main complaint and with the resolution back to 1080 my god is this a gorgeous transfer. Easily a 4K scan from the OCN. Stunning transfer. Massive jump from the dvd.

I will complain if the sound still fades out. That has bugged me for years. The first vocal fade was at 11:27 on DVD. Some people say that the lead singer is meant to fade out there, but I don't like it anyway.

Actually due to the extremely low resolution of the extras being non anamorphic dvd they look better windowboxed. I watched the extended can can dance which is fantastic and really wish they could have transferred these to high def from the 35mm film even in a 1.9K scan. Going from 4K scanned bluray to a non anamorphic dvd scene is painful to watch. The scene is essentially 270 x 720 and blowing that up 820 x 1920 is pretty rough viewing.

I'm sure they'd want to be paid for their time. And I'm just as sure that the studios don't want to pay them. It's precious few directors who have rights over their masters like Cameron does, for example.
