Hi,

We moved into our home on December 1st, and set up a new account with Dish. When they installed the satellite dish, they also gave us a Dish 612 DVR. The unit worked great for two months, and then the hard drive crashed. They sent a replacement DVR -- it worked for about two months -- and then the hard drive crashed. They sent a replacement DVR -- it worked for about three months -- and then the hard drive crashed. We are now on our *fourth* Dish 612 DVR, and it seems to be working OK.

Last week, we decided to install an additional receiver in our bedroom. We ordered the Dish 722 DVR and convinced the loyalty department that we should get it for a discount because of our other problems. I took off work on Friday afternoon to wait for the installer, but he never showed up. When I called that evening, the Dish phone support person said that someone had called in and cancelled my appointment. The Dish person finally conceded that it must have been an error on their side, and they agreed to waive the DVR charges for six months as compensation.

Two days later, the installer arrived and set up a new Dish 722 DVR. Everything worked great until about fifteen minutes after he left. The picture froze up while connected to the HD Food Channel, the audio continued for a few seconds, and then the system crashed completely. I went through several hard and soft reboots, and tried connecting to the wall directly without the power strip. The longest I could keep the system functioning was about fifteen minutes.

The technician came out the next day, fiddled with the DVR and concluded that the signal was good so the DVR must be bad. I called Dish, and they are sending out yet another DVR to replace the 722.

When we signed up for Dish, my wife mentioned that she had heard several complaints from friends about their equipment failures. But I *insisted* that Dish was a good provider. Every time a unit fails, I feel like more of a sap.

Is there any difference with Direct TV? At this point, they have screwed up so massively that I think I can convince them to let me out of the contract. But are the competitors any better? I would stay with Dish and wait for them to figure out these problems, but there's no way I'm going to pay some bogus insurance fee to cover the costs of inevitable, repeated equipment failures.

The most maddening thing is the fact that almost all of the Dish employees have been very nice individuals. Some are more swift than others. Some are *much* more swift than others. But they're all pretty decent people who seem to be representing a dysfunctional corporation.

Help!!! What should we do? Do Dish representatives ever read these forums? Is there any chance of justice on the horizon? Are we just having an unusual string of bad luck with our Dish service?

Thanks!
