So I got me a nice new 7.1 home theater system, and there is basically no blu-ray movies that even support 7.1, and very few PS3 games.
What gives? Is it more expensive to add the 7.1 to the discs?

Plenty of 7.1 BDs:
Just go to AUDIO and select 7.1 then click FILTER

ok alot more than I thought. But still, what's the primary reason that majority of movies don't have 7.1 ??
Does it cost the movie producers more money to mix in 7.1?

Mostly it's because regular 35mm theaters don't support 7.1, and the mixes must be done especially for BluRay;
Both DTS and Dolby Digital, in their theater incarnations, are able to deliver only 5 discrete channels, and an additional back surround channel in the latest models that is matrixed into LS and RS, like dolby pro logic's center channel.
SDDS, a 35mm system which was abandoned by Sony, offers 7.1 channels theoretically, but in a different configuration with 5 frontal channels; very few movies were mixed this way, and even fewer theaters have amplification for all channels, the usual SDDS theater downmixes the 5 frontal channels to the standard 3 LCR channels.
Thus, 7.1 mixes are always done exclusively for the BluRay market: it's additional cost is justified only in very high profile titles, considering the still limited penetration of 7.1 setups like yours.

That's what happens when you're an early adopter :eek:
Same as special height channels, 9.1 etc. etc., features with no application yet but you must have them now :p
Me I'm happy with 5.1 even though I have a 7.1 receiver :D
