View Full Version : How to do high speed dub with Philip DVDR3575/37?
Skylark 09-19-09, 05:17 PM A lady friend has a Philips DVDR3575/37 DVD recorder. I've read her manual and see that there should be a way to do high speed dubs from the HDD to DVD. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to select the "High" record mode to enable high speed dubs later.
With my Panasonic E100H, I had to set up high speed recording when I first installed it. This records in a format that allows high speed dubs later. The recordings can be at different speeds, so I use SP or LP record modes. Later, I'm able to high speed dub SP or LP recordings to DVDs which includes the chapter markers.
I did searches and found several posts by Wajo, but still can't figure out how to do high speed dubs using the Philips DVDR-3575/37. Could someone please post a step-by-step procedure for dummies on how to do it? I need to know which buttons to press to even get into the proper screens to set it up.
Thanks!
Sky
Two help files needed:
1. Dubbing procedure (in general). (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=12327722&postcount=26#Dub3)
2. Notes on high-speed dub (HSD) (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=12298490&postcount=19) that helps understand how to get there for doing #1, specifically, how HSD is based "solely" on disc capacity.

Hi Wajo,
First, thanks for the tremendous amount of time you've invested in keying in all of the information in your posts. Awesome!
After reading the information in the links you posted, could you confirm if my understanding of doing HSDs using the Philips DVDR-3575 is correct? (Actually I saw those posts before but was looking for a procedure similar to my Panny E100H DVDR.)
1. There is nothing required to be set up prior to making a recording to qualify the recording for HSD later. Only the record quality like HQ, STD, LP etc need be selected.
2. When doing the actual HDD to DVD dubbing, that's when the "High" option becomes available. Choosing the "High" option then dubs whatever record quality was selected in step-1.
3. That's all there is to it.
Am I way off?
Thanks,
Sky

Correct.
One caution: All chapter marks in the HDD titles are dubbed, whether auto-placed or custom made with chapter insertions or Scene Deletes (each delete sets a new chapter mark). With HSD, chapter marks are moved to DVD-spec required locations, so not a good idea to make original recordings with auto-chapter set for 5 min. intervals (default is 10-min., which are OK) IF lots of Scene Deletes are made... HSD movement of the marks can cause problems in the dub or the playback.
2. When doing the actual HDD to DVD dubbing, that's when the "High" option becomes available. Choosing the "High" option then dubs whatever record quality was selected in step-1.
The "High" option will only be auto-selected if the total MB capacity of the titles Added to the Dub list will fit the 4424MB capacity of the DVD.
If you see any other rec mode highlighted (menu shows the NEW MB of titles to be dubbed at that highlighted rec mode... can be confusing), that means you have to either do a real-time dub at that rec mode, or Back out and cut scenes or delete titles.
Hardest part is knowing in advance if a list of mixed rec-mode titles is below the 4424MB capacity... as that HSD help files tries to explain with some "math" samples. If in doubt, do prep work to get to Dub menu and see if it allows HSD, then Back out if not there yet,

My lady friend only records in HQ mode. From your chart, it appears that should allow 2 hrs and 2 minutes of recording on a standard 4.7 GB DVD-R but only 1 hr and 59 min of recording on a DVD+R. Hope that's right. I'll tell her to only buy DVD-R blanks.
Thanks a million!

No, an HQ recording will only fit 1:04:55 on a -R or +R disc.
A SP recording will fit 2:10:00 or so, unless it's a 3+ hr football game with 36 or more Scene Deletes, then it's 2:08:00.
Not sure where you got the diff. between +R and -R... maybe I need to revise my writeup?
EDIT: I see where your +R/-R came from... you must have seen it in the "Elapsed Time" chart, which is just a collection of HSD elapsed times people have experienced using certain types of discs.
Elapsed time is just the time each machine's burner takes to do a HSD (4X burner in a 3575/3576 and 8X in a 2160).

Will advise her to record in SP mode instead of always in HQ mode to be able to HSD.
I assume she was recording in HQ mode and if it was a 2 hour movie, since she was recording in realtime, the HQ mode was being transcoded to SP mode and then recorded on the DVD. (Just a guess since I don't know for sure that she recorded 2 hour movies. But she did say that she only records in HQ mode since she wants the best quality. I'll have to ask her.)

Very very little difference in any DVDR between HQ/XP and SP anyway. The only time I'd use the 1hr speed was if I had less than 1hr to put on the disc, in which case why not use up the most disc space you can.

That's good to know regarding the Philips DVDR. Wasn't sure if there is a noticeable difference in picture quality between HQ and SP.
