View Full Version : State of the Art Flat Panel
Hi
I have one of the 60" Elite Kuros that are now no longer made. Projectors aren't really in the cards right now so what's the top technology and brand for self-contained displays these days and what's close to being released to consumers?
THANKS!!
Matt
CINERAMAX 09-20-09, 05:40 PM 85 inch 3-D plasma.
rabident 10-14-09, 08:13 AM I haven't kept track of flat panels, but I saw a 2.35:1 native LCD screen. Resolution was ~2660 x 1080p. It looked exotic. Something new and different that would get attention on the wall. I don't know if they make high end versions, though.
jmichaelf 10-14-09, 08:35 AM The local dimming LG LH90 LCDs are getting a lot of play. I don't think they're any bigger than 55" though. It's a pretty snazzy set just the same.
That 'scope LCD is pretty cool for $7500.

Thanks for the info guys. Just hoping that in the next year or two I'll have a good reason to move the Kuro into the bedroom and put something bigger/better on the wall in the living room. It does seem like we're in a bit of a "tech pause" at the moment.
ChrisWiggles 10-14-09, 12:01 PM Panasonic plasmas are the replacement for the Kuro. They hired away a bunch of pioneer's engineers too I believe. Masterinig studios are replacing a lot of legacy CRT BVMs with pioneers plasmas. The commercial units are quite a pleasure and quite accurate.
The SIM2 SOLAR47 has some go-fast technology -- though it is not a large image size....over 2200 individually addressable LEDs, 16-bit processing, and contrast that's stated to be 1,000,000:1. It's said to be jointly developed with Dolby's HDR group.

If that attitude aptly governed behavior no one would own a PC.
Not saying the bleeding edge of technology is a thrifty place to be, but I happen to like this stuff and no one in my house is going hungry. :)
Thanks to the other respondents. Appreciate it.

Now that's what I'm talking about. I wonder who the OEM is and $$$?

donaldk 10-31-09, 09:04 AM The Runco is a rebadged Panasonic, no idea wether this is the first or second generation of the 103", there's a B&O version as well, both come at a considerable premium to the Panasonic. Panasonic is still to launch/ship its new Neo-PDP 100". The 150" 4K plasma should become available following the opening of Panasonic's new plasma plant next year.
With the exception of the 11 inch Sony OLED, there is nothing out there that is more "state of the art" than you already have.
LG is 3 years away from releasing its 40 inch OLED panel.
Things are improving incrementally. By the time your Kuro actually needs replacing, an 85 inch plasma might be realistic, as long as you don't mind spending the same amount that you would pay to get a really nice sedan.

Cant say that is true for Kuro. We are selling our place and a buyer offered me what I paid for my 15 month old 141 Kuro. I decided no because if I did sell it for what i paid there is nothing I could buy to replace the quality at that price. After 12 months Kuros have gone up in value if you are serious about owning the best flat panel,.
coolscan 10-31-09, 12:38 PM Would be silly to invest in anything "state of the art flat panel" now just a year before the 3D able flat panels are released.
And talking about 3D TV's;
Looks like some sort of backprojected LCoS TV will emerge in a new Laser driven technology.
When this 100" 1080Hz 3D display was announced a month or so ago by a startup company nobody paid much attention; (watch the videoreport)
HDI concocts 100-inch laser-based 3D HDTV, calls rivaling technology child's play (http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/09/17/hdi-concocts-100-inch-laser-based-3d-hdtv-calls-rivaling-techno/)
But now it looks like it's going into production;
HDI's laser-driven 3D HDTV hits production, should ship next year (http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/10/30/hdis-laser-driven-3d-hdtv-hits-production-should-ship-next-yea/)

Only if you actually care about 3D...

I think thats pretty impressive. LED panels? How far away before everything becomes seamless. What is the lowest resolution you can get away with feeding that thing?

Yes, Barco. You actually need a 20 x 10 array of the NX-4 model to achieve 1920 x 1080. According to what I saw all the panels in that video = ~10 million pixels. As far as lowest resolution I would think you have to create a resolution equal to the number of panels, in this instance 5x HD.

Actually HDI 'launched' it this spring, good to see this two chipper materialize even at a premium. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1137190

Ash Sharma 10-31-09, 09:49 PM I installed the Lg LHX55 LED today, I am not sure what more they can do to improve flat panel from here on. The picture is unreal with 7 million CR 240 HZ this LED is lit throughout (not edge lit) the panel and is 1 inch thick.

Runco is not a rebaged Panny. Sure, it might use Panny glass, but that does not a state-of-th-art plasma make. You have proccessing that takes to another level.

Well, that technology? A LOT! Back light bleeding (although Sharp may be on to something), crosstalk, poor off axis viewing angles, poor motion performance w/o interpolation... should I go on?

Another level than, say, a Radiance XD + Panny?
Pretty soon flat panels will be so thin we'll just lick the back of them and stick them to the wall. Of course the connectors will then be too thick so they'll have to be driven wirelessly.

Clearly the Runco label painted on the front dramatically improves the signal path.
