I tried downloading the service manual (servicedownload3.free.fr/DVP720SA_EN.pdf) for this player. However, my screen reader won't verbally read this PDF to me. Can someone please tell me whether this player uses the Burr-Brown DSD1702/1791/1792/1796, PCM1702/1738/1742/1780/1781/1782/1791/1792/1796, or Cirrus Logic CS4361/4362/4381/4382/4392/4397/4398? Thank you.

Anyway, I did a google search for DVP720SA audio DAC, and an HTML excerpt from that service manual came up and it uses a Cirrus Logic CS4360. That DAC has a rather low S/N ratio and dynamic range and cannot accept SACD's DSD. Therefor any player that uses it converts DSD to PCM before reaching the analog outs. Also, there are several players based on this one such as the Marantz DV6001/7001 and VC6001, as well as the Yamaha DV-C6760/6761/6770/6771, DV-S5860, DVD-C750/950/961, and DVD-S657. Considering the lower S/N ratio and dynamic range of some of these players, I would assume that they also use the Cirrus Logic CS4360. It's a shame because these players have nice video sections!

I've just ordered a Yamaha DV-S5860 from Buy.com for a blowout price of $36. Can you expound a little on the implied problems with Cirrus Logic CS4360 DAC? I don't know anything about DACs, so please dumb it down for me!

Also, what's the cheapest player that uses a Burr-Brown?

$36 is great for that old player! If you need SACD, yet you don't want to spend much, check out the Denon DVD1940CI aka the DVD758. They use Burr-Browns that can play pure DSD via the 5.1 analog outputs, without conversion to PCM. However, the one problem with the Denon is that it can't be easily made region-free. If you need SACD and region-free capabilities, just stick with your 5860. If you want a player with Burr-Brown DACs that can be made multi-region, get the Pioneer DV-610AV aka the DV-49AV and install the PioneerFAQ firmware on it. Like your new Yamaha, this player converts DSD to PCM and its DACs are only 1dB better than the ones in your new Yamaha. However, the Pioneer has better Composite and Component video than on your new Yamaha, especially when you install the PioneerFAQ firmware on it.

Thanks for the detailed response!

I'm only using the Yamaha for CD, SACD, and mp3 playback (in that order) so video quality is not an issue for me. Audio quality is, so it appears that the Pioneer would not be that big of an upgrade over my Yamaha in terms of audio.

Dakmart.com has the Denon you mention refurbished for only $43! Since I don't need region-freedom, that would be an excellent alternative to my Yamaha. Unfortunately, it only comes in black!

Of course, if you really want a great SACD player, Vanns has the Pioneer Elite DV-58AV. I think their selling that for under $350.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not really an SACD guy--I just have about 30 hybrids that I wanted to access the SACD layer on--the main reason I got this was to replace a standard CD player. I listen to vinyl 90 percent of the time anyway!
