During his opening song and dance for the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards Sept. 20, host Neil Patrick Harris got in several digs at non-traditional media.

While pleading to the audience to “put down the remote,” Harris mentioned TiVo and HDTVs, told viewers to avoid jumping online, and made fun of the intimidating number of channels available today.

Actor Ken Howard, after accepting his award for Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for his role in “Gray Gardens,” joked that he was thrilled about the “advent of new media, and [I] can barely wait to renegotiate.”

And “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner, during his acceptance speech for the series as Outstanding Drama Series, said he wasn’t afraid of new media, saying it offered more choice for more entertainment.

“It’s better for the viewers in the end, and I’m glad to be a part of it,” he said.
