I want to add another Directv box at home. The previous owners had the house wired for two more rooms, and they left an HD dish. I had someone come to install a standard def DVR who told me that I have an HD dish, but now I would like to get a High Def DVR for the HDTV downstairs and move the SD DVR upstairs to an old TV set. If I were to buy either a standard receiver to put with the old TV or a new HD DVR for downstairs from Best Buy, what hoops would I have to jump through to get this activated? Since the dish is HD ready, could I conceivably get HD service without paying the extra $10 per month, or should I just wait until my contract is up (June 2010) and upgrade then?

As long as you can get an HD-DVR, you should have no problems.

Unfortunately, you can't just connect it and get free HD channels. That box has to be authorized, and you will still have to pay for the HD channels!

If you do wait until your contract expires, you may be able to work a box in at no cost as part of the upgrade.
