Anyone watch this show? Very funny. Check it out, 9:00pm Wednesday ABC.

I thought it was ok, but was only half watching it.

At least it doesn't have a laugh track, which immediately causes me to turn off any sitcom.

Hilarious. Sweet, perceptive, well acted, and the hand held, pseudo-documentary style doesn't detract too much. Off to a really good start.

I have not been thrilled with the jerky camera movements on any show that has them.

It's nice to see Michael Scott on another show (the dad who can dance to High School Musical); but even though the character is familiar, he was still funny. Not a half bad show. I'll give it another couple of episodes before I make my mind up. But the show that followed was horrible. I know it's from the fine folks who brought us Srubs, but pee-eww. It had a few moments, and the dad (new lawns-keeper at the High School) was by far the funniest of the bunch, but lose the blonde at the real estate office and get the best friend (the gal from Scrubs) to stop with the lip injections already -- it actually affects how she talks. I like Courtney Cox-Arquette, and she can still deliver a line well, but she needs better material (or a visit from some of her friends).

The show had a good start, lets see if it continues.

Come on - at least create a character that has some interesting aspects. We have seen everyone of these characters over and over and over again. True they might not have been pulled together in a family, but there was nothing original or insightful, or even fun in the pilot.

I didn't mind the cliches, and I haven't laughed so hard since the Steve Carrell babbling newscast in Bruce Almighty. I think this could be the sitcom to watch this season. Great comic timing!

Hopefully, as the show goes on, everyone will be more nuanced. This was a Pilot trying to introduce all the characters in one 22 minutes show after all.

THe next few weeks will be telling though, both from a narrative point of veiw and ratings. I'm not sure this will get wide appeal.

I thought it was pretty good. Definitely has potential to be very good and funny. Time will tell, but I'm in for the next few episodes at least.

So did I! I loved it, lots of great dialog and the timing to go with it. If the show maintains this level it will earn a season pass on one of my DVRs. :)

I liked this as well. So far the new season is shaping up to be better than I expected. Great cast too. Ed O'Neill has got better with age and Sofia Vergara is always welcome on my screen.

Now if they would only tone down the pseudo-documentary camerawork ...

I've never been a fan of shaky-cam for this sort of show, but I doubt they'll ditch it. As long as they can maintain the comic tempo, it might not be that bad. I didn't pay that much attention to it because the characters were so engaging. Let the action slow and it might be a different story.

I just plain didn't get this show. All I could do the whole time was look at the hot hispanic chick and think, "Wow. Ed O'Neill must be a hell of a guy, because someone obviously owed him big time."

I'm going to continue to give this a chance, but I have to be honest. It was difficult to find any laughs in this considering that just about every single scene has been shown in the previews leading up to it's debut.

The airplane creampuff scene? Saw it.
The dad dancing to High School Musical? Saw it.
The soccer game and Ed O'Neill being called Sofia Vergara's dad? Saw it.
The painting on the baby's wall? Saw it.
The dad shooting the BB gun? Saw it.
The scene where Sofia says Phil and he hears Feel so he touches her dress? Saw it.
Basically every scene where the couples were talking to the camera? Saw it.

About the only thing that wasn't shown in any previews was the security guard telling Ed O'Neill to move to the side with the mall walkers. That was funny to me.

Like I said, I'll give it a chance as they obviously blew their load with the previews for the 1st episode and hopefully something fresh will be more funny.

Agreed :) I saw a few previews, but we hardly watch ABC at all so much of this was pretty fresh for us. Both the Fiancee and myself enjoyed this show alot and atleast for us had many LOL moments. Hopefully they can keep this up for the rest of the season.

Best line of the night-

Funny as hell episode. A real LOL moment when the guy steals the kids blocks so that Lily looks smart. And the bike thing, and the hot chick; just a great episode all around. If we could lose Hank and Cougar Town, it'd be a great one-two punch with Modern Family and The Middle.

I just placed the jogging sexpot as the science leader of a volcano world visited by the Stargate Atlantis team. Sheppard's bravery wins her over McKay's (cowardly) brilliance.

"Modern Family" is a cleverly written sitcom that keeps me alert, listening for the witty dialog. I watched Patricia Heaton's "The Middle" and Kelsey Grammer's "Hank," but I think their execution is far more formulaic and stale than "Modern Family." I'd predict that "Hank" would get yanked pretty fast, but Kelsey Grammer's cred should keep it on the air. Now I know where Jordan Hinson went after her stint on "Eureka." She's Hank's daughter.

I had hopes of a Must See group of sitcoms on Wednesday night, but so far "Modern Family" is the only one I really care about.

even though the characters are basically all stereotypes and the show gets no point for originality I'll be watching b/c I think it's pretty funny. If you want to see unoriginal and unfunny stereotype, see Hank!

I also like this show better than Community, which tries too hard to be quirky and offbeat but ends up feeling like a comedy writing class rather than a show.

I think this show works because it's basically standup and sketch style comedy, there's the setup and the punchline, haven't seen much plot/story at all, just a seres of situations where the writers can produce funny outcomes. I realize that's what a sit-com is, but they do it extremely well here. The one-liners in this show are darn good as well.

I thought Hank was terrible, I was thinking while watching that maybe Kelsey Grammer should stop trying to be the star and try an ensemble piece next time, I say next time because I'll be surprised if anyone even remembers this one by Jan. Grammer seems to be the same character in almost everything comedy he's done.

I'm glad IMDb was wrong because I'm usually good at recognizing people, but I just took their word for it.

Now I see they have two listed for Desiree as they probably realized the mistake.

I picked up two comedies this season, community and modern family - the latter is definately way ahead of community. The rests are pretty much junk.

I watched, I wasn't impressed. Trite, trite, trite. I canceled my season pass, there is nothing new or interesting here. The dad is still trying to be hip and cool, the father and the gay couple are stereotypes. I was hoping for better. At least it's not "According to Jim" bad, but it's not great writing by any stretch either.

One by one I'm winnowing down my over loaded season passes. 21 minutes freed up...

Fewer LOL moments, but still there were a few; certainly enough to keep me watching. The Middle was the funnier of the two last night and still makes for a great 1-2 punch (ignoring Hank and Cougertown).

I got a minor chuckle out of some of the things, but not even close to the laughs I had from the first 2.

For me, so far, this is the best new show (at least sitcom) of the season. Saw The Middle for the first time last night and it only made Modern Family seem that much better.

The middle aged dad and the gay couple are what is turning me off this show. The dad is a shlub, the trying to be with it angle is worn out and over done. He seems too smart to be that dumb and unfunny. The gay couple is just a stereotype. I killed my season pass tonight. There were interesting parts, but the broad comedy was over the top. Shelly Long being hauled out of the wedding and managing to destroy the cake was just too obvious as is much of the stuff in the show.

The dad in the bedroom scene was just too ridiculous too, Malt Shop? Come on. Then the Dylan kid singing, who didn't know he was going to blow it at any moment.

I guess I was looking for a show with a bit more subtle comedy, and a bit more insight, this show is not it.

I loved the wedding when Shelly was talking about how her ex husbands wallet and his new wife's boobs matched. This episode was better then last week but the show has still lost some fizzle from the 1st two shows IMHO.

jamieva -I give a new show 3 or 4 outings to grab me, or at least interest me. I like the premise, I like most of the actors, and I wanted to like it. Smart and subtle goes a long way in my book, and I was hoping they would take that route with the show. About the only thing that is missing that would make this a total sitcom is a laugh track, I could just hear the snickers that would have accompanied the bit where the brother refers to "Mommy' and the sister quickly refers to "Daddy". That was poor writing to me.

The part I though was a bit unusual was the part when Dylan spoke up, I wasn't expecting that, but they killed it with the song going where it shouldn't have. Would any teen boy sing those lyrics to his girls entire family? Unless he was a total idiot he would not. A non-sitcom kid would have just started humming and mention it was a work in progress and leave it at that.

Yeah, this isn't the place to go looking for realistic. That's why I like it. The over the top characters and dialogue are what I hope they can maintain, along with the kernels of family truth that keep it relatable. So far, they've carried it off pretty well as far as I'm concerned. Whether they can sustain the same level and keep me interested is what I'm looking forward to finding out.

Great episode; best new comedy in a long time. The Middle is very good as well but will probably get canceled by the series killer ABC.

This is one of those shows that I refuse to analyze to death. If I stop laughing, I'll stop watching.

You might meet gay couples in the workplace arena that both seem straight...but you would rarely meet a gay couple in a more relaxed setting that at least in some part didn't seem "gay"..I mean nothing bad and I'm not saying it 100%, but the very few gay couples I've been around, all seemed to be somewhat like the couple on this show. His and hers, if you know what I mean. :)

Anyways, anything with Salma Hayek on it is worth watching.

Anyway, its an OK show (Sofia Viagra helps ;-) but the shakeycam gets a bit annoying at times.

I meant to mentoin the Big Ten thing as they never play on weeknights, but, living on the East Coast, I never thought about the fact that a 7:30 start here is 4:30 in Cali. D'oh. So, I guess plenty of games do start in the time frame they showed on the show, just not big Ten.

It wasn't annoying, just a little strange that the week before the kids are in school and they're watching football and this week it was the first day of school. Also the daughter was taking a lacrosse stick to school, around here lacrosse is a spring sport. Otherwise it was a good episode.

One of the best episodes this season, all around excellent and hilarous.

I'm a little surprised this show doesn't generate more talk. It's become one of the highlights of the week for me, and it just seems to get better and better. It reminds me a bit of Better Off Ted, but with far more warmth and humanity and far less kitsch.

Yeah it was Shelley Long and her episode was about how inappropriate she was at the wedding for her ex hubby and Sofia Vergara's character. Hopefully she works into more episodes as they go along.

The wife and I really love this show, the funniest on TV right now by far, in my opinion. I love the cast of characters, the flow of the show, the eye candy, everything.

The fact that Al is back certainly helps, lol.

It kills me how people dissect the show and put it down, it's a freakin comedy.

I've loved Julie Bowen in anything I've ever seen her in. She's brilliant and completely believable in both comedy and drama. She brings a subtlety of performance that most actresses can't even come close to pulling off.

I swear this show is getting better each week.

One of my favorite scenes from the 1/20 show -- when Cam was trying to get the florist to come over to exchange his flowers and give him new ones because he was "very displeased" with them.

Best quote -- "Why, look at that...two things flaming at once!" LOL!

I tried out the new comedies this season, and with the exception of this one, I've removed them from my DVR list. I liked this show, but I wondered if they might have trouble maintaining the humor. How stupid was that? Modern Family continually gets better. It's a perfect cast for the concept, it's brilliantly written, it's always fresh and fun, and the pacing is spot on.

I related to this episode particularly - from marveling at how bright friends of mine are totally incapable of understanding a universal remote to having trouble myself with Prius voice commands.

This show is comedy gold, and the vein they've struck is deep and long.

If you have not seen it, you need to find the epsidode of the Osbournes where Ozzy tries to use Gen 1 iDrive in his 7 series BMW.

I think that was one of my favorite episodes. Lots of very funny scenes (I laughed out loud at the mexican food response too) and a gadget related storyline that was very relatable. Phil must have a lot of disposable income to spring for two Pronto 9600s.

The kid who plays Manny is just terrific. He's got great timing and really does convincingly sound wise beyond his years.

I agree. This week's was weaker then the last 3-4. The jacket in the escalator was funny when the first couple showed up, but they kept having more and more show, the joke wore old pretty quickly.

Ty Burrell is brilliant. I keep thinking (in retrospect) how wasted he was in "Back to You," the short-lived (and weak) Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton sitcom. Who knew back then that he was such a comic genius? And I dare you to find me a better comic pair than Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen. She does comedy as well as she does drama.

The business between Phil and Claire at the bar when he had to get out of bringing up the "lists" was pure comic genius, revealing each person's characters perfectly. Next best scene: dropping the underwear as they were retreating.

Priceless.

About a week ago, I re-watched the pilot. Before I knew what hit me, I had re-watched the whole series to date - laughing just as hard or harder than I had the first time around. :D

In the Toyota Sienna trailer of the episode I like the reference to the pilot episode re the "oil".

Oh please. This show rarely goes for the easy joke. But even when they do it;s hilarious. As long as it's funny though, who cares? Hell, they even addressed that last night. When Mitchell scolded Cam on being stereotypical on the lesbians...and then he discussed the motorcycles without realizing he was doing the exact same thing. Awesome.

I have to agree. It's hard to find fault when I'm rolling on the floor in laughter. I don't much care how a comedy gets me down there.

Haley is fast becoming a favorite of mine. Her hysterical teen angst had me hysterical.

I guess I just don't get it, and the show is not for me. The bad Asian driver was just too over the top especially coupled with the over the top stereotypical gay guys. Then you add the dad that tries too hard and it's just not that funny.

I will grant that it is a well done show, and there are comedic moments, but they play it too safe. Throw a curve from time to time. Personally, I'd have found it more interesting if the gay couple were construction workers or some other more "macho" profession, or even just some everyday guys -someone who you would not think of as gay the moment you met them.

I guess I just don't get it, and the show is not for me. The bad Asian driver was just too over the top especially coupled with the over the top stereotypical gay guys. Then you add the dad that tries too hard and it's just not that funny.

I had my brother-in-law over yesterday and we watched an episode of Modern Family. Although he's really busy (10 hour days and lots of stress), he watched 3 episodes before he reluctantly had to go. He asked me if I knew where he could watch more episodes online. I think Modern Family has a new fan. :D

Not at all... they just didn't have another show to fill in the 8pm slot since Kelsey Grammer's show bombed in the fall and for some reason they didn't seem to want to use Scrubs or Better of Ted- so they're using it to show replays (and they weren't runnings anything new against the Olympics)

No, I got the joke completely - that line telegraphed exactly what was about to happen. That's what bothers me, come up with a smart twist, not the most obvious one.
