View Full Version : 'Modern Family' on ABC HD mark2061 09-23-09, 08:32 PM Anyone watch this show? Very funny. Check it out, 9:00pm Wednesday ABC. mproper 09-23-09, 08:35 PM I thought it was ok, but was only half watching it. At least it doesn't have a laugh track, which immediately causes me to turn off any sitcom. jamieva 09-23-09, 09:48 PM It was hilarious. Liked it a lot Shaded Dogfood 09-23-09, 09:57 PM Hilarious. Sweet, perceptive, well acted, and the hand held, pseudo-documentary style doesn't detract too much. Off to a really good start. Dmon4u 09-23-09, 10:27 PM I have not been thrilled with the jerky camera movements on any show that has them. petesimac 09-23-09, 10:34 PM It's nice to see Michael Scott on another show (the dad who can dance to High School Musical); but even though the character is familiar, he was still funny. Not a half bad show. I'll give it another couple of episodes before I make my mind up. But the show that followed was horrible. I know it's from the fine folks who brought us Srubs, but pee-eww. It had a few moments, and the dad (new lawns-keeper at the High School) was by far the funniest of the bunch, but lose the blonde at the real estate office and get the best friend (the gal from Scrubs) to stop with the lip injections already -- it actually affects how she talks. I like Courtney Cox-Arquette, and she can still deliver a line well, but she needs better material (or a visit from some of her friends). WaTaGuMp 09-24-09, 12:04 AM The show had a good start, lets see if it continues. Matt L 09-24-09, 12:41 AM I wanted to like the show, it looked like it might be good, but all it was was a retread of every stereotype in the book. The dad who tries to be too hip, the bratty youngest kid that does stupid things. The middle kid that is wiser than her years, the old man with a young, hot wife. Then the gay couple that is pure stereotype, show tunes an all. Come on - at least create a character that has some interesting aspects. We have seen everyone of these characters over and over and over again. True they might not have been pulled together in a family, but there was nothing original or insightful, or even fun in the pilot. C- possibly D+ Joseph Clark 09-24-09, 02:37 AM I had one of those "spit milk through my nose" moments when dad shot his son, his daughter's boyfriend and himself with plastic bee bees. I didn't mind the cliches, and I haven't laughed so hard since the Steve Carrell babbling newscast in Bruce Almighty. I think this could be the sitcom to watch this season. Great comic timing! Marcus Carr 09-24-09, 08:03 AM Didn't work for me. Lee L 09-24-09, 09:29 AM I wanted to like the show, it looked like it might be good, but all it was was a retread of every stereotype in the book. The dad who tries to be too hip, the bratty youngest kid that does stupid things. The middle kid that is wiser than her years, the old man with a young, hot wife. We have seen everyone of these characters over and over and over again. True they might not have been pulled together in a family, but there was nothing original or insightful, or even fun in the pilot. C- possibly D+ Hopefully, as the show goes on, everyone will be more nuanced. This was a Pilot trying to introduce all the characters in one 22 minutes show after all. THe next few weeks will be telling though, both from a narrative point of veiw and ratings. I'm not sure this will get wide appeal. NJHD42 09-24-09, 10:28 AM I thought it was pretty good. Definitely has potential to be very good and funny. Time will tell, but I'm in for the next few episodes at least. AlanSaysYo 09-24-09, 10:32 AM Liked it a lot, and I will definitely be watching for the rest of the season. I agree that the goofy dad was Micahel Scott-esque, maybe even a bit too much. rsambuca 09-24-09, 12:18 PM My wife and I hardly watch any sitcoms, but we sampled this one and thought it was quite good. We will definitely be checking out the next few episodes at least. Chad R 09-24-09, 05:22 PM Nah, didn't like it at all. Stereotypes and embarrassingly bad humor (a baby holding a creme puff, really?). keenan 09-24-09, 05:40 PM I had one of those "spit milk through my nose" moments when dad shot his son, his daughter's boyfriend and himself with plastic bee bees. I didn't mind the cliches, and I haven't laughed so hard since the Steve Carrell babbling newscast in Bruce Almighty. I think this could be the sitcom to watch this season. Great comic timing! So did I! I loved it, lots of great dialog and the timing to go with it. If the show maintains this level it will earn a season pass on one of my DVRs. :) "...the little pot-sticker" :p:D moob 09-24-09, 05:53 PM I thought it was hilarious as well. Lily? Isn't that gonna be hard to pronounce? :D WaTaGuMp 09-24-09, 05:56 PM I liked the little kid, the mom says the girl he was after was 15 I think, and the kid said something about how its ok for mom to have an older lover. :D VisionOn 09-24-09, 06:12 PM I liked this as well. So far the new season is shaping up to be better than I expected. Great cast too. Ed O'Neill has got better with age and Sofia Vergara is always welcome on my screen. Now if they would only tone down the pseudo-documentary camerawork ... Joseph Clark 09-24-09, 06:21 PM I've never been a fan of shaky-cam for this sort of show, but I doubt they'll ditch it. As long as they can maintain the comic tempo, it might not be that bad. I didn't pay that much attention to it because the characters were so engaging. Let the action slow and it might be a different story. DeeKaye07 09-24-09, 09:32 PM "LOL Laugh out loud, WTF why the face".... That one did make me laugh. ;) DGK MeowMeow 09-24-09, 09:39 PM Who didn't watch Battlestar Galactica and think, "Wow! What the modern sitcom is missing is that shaky hand cam style!" Oh, wait. No one did. I just plain didn't get this show. All I could do the whole time was look at the hot hispanic chick and think, "Wow. Ed O'Neill must be a hell of a guy, because someone obviously owed him big time." Tom Imp 09-25-09, 10:02 PM I'm going to continue to give this a chance, but I have to be honest. It was difficult to find any laughs in this considering that just about every single scene has been shown in the previews leading up to it's debut. The airplane creampuff scene? Saw it. The dad dancing to High School Musical? Saw it. The soccer game and Ed O'Neill being called Sofia Vergara's dad? Saw it. The painting on the baby's wall? Saw it. The dad shooting the BB gun? Saw it. The scene where Sofia says Phil and he hears Feel so he touches her dress? Saw it. Basically every scene where the couples were talking to the camera? Saw it. About the only thing that wasn't shown in any previews was the security guard telling Ed O'Neill to move to the side with the mall walkers. That was funny to me. Like I said, I'll give it a chance as they obviously blew their load with the previews for the 1st episode and hopefully something fresh will be more funny. sayanythingrock 09-25-09, 11:27 PM i loved this, i really had to watch it 2x to really get a hold of some of the jokes. Where is the baby oil? in the bedside table....Look for it funniest pilot since Arrested chad473 09-25-09, 11:31 PM I thought it was great. set up a series recording as soon as the pilot was over. Matt L 09-26-09, 01:28 AM Wow. What's to love? I've got too much to watch and need to start pruning, this is off the top... moob 09-26-09, 02:15 AM Who didn't watch Battlestar Galactica and think, "Wow! What the modern sitcom is missing is that shaky hand cam style!" Oh, wait. No one did. Actually, it seems like quite a few people did since it's used on 30 Rock, The Office, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and was also used on Arrested Development. I'm sure there are more too, but those are the ones I've seen and can remember. I'm going to continue to give this a chance, but I have to be honest. It was difficult to find any laughs in this considering that just about every single scene has been shown in the previews leading up to it's debut. Good thing I didn't see any previews then. :p I just read a couple reviews. Wow. What's to love? What's not to love? Ph8te 09-30-09, 09:01 PM Actually, it seems like quite a few people did since it's used on 30 Rock, The Office, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and was also used on Arrested Development. I'm sure there are more too, but those are the ones I've seen and can remember. Good thing I didn't see any previews then. :p I just read a couple reviews. What's not to love? Agreed :) I saw a few previews, but we hardly watch ABC at all so much of this was pretty fresh for us. Both the Fiancee and myself enjoyed this show alot and atleast for us had many LOL moments. Hopefully they can keep this up for the rest of the season. DaveFi 09-30-09, 09:16 PM Best line of the night- Ed O'Neil: This kid thinks his father is Superman. The only thing his father and Superman have in common is they entered the country illegally.:D:D:D That one was pretty good. petesimac 09-30-09, 10:06 PM Funny as hell episode. A real LOL moment when the guy steals the kids blocks so that Lily looks smart. And the bike thing, and the hot chick; just a great episode all around. If we could lose Hank and Cougar Town, it'd be a great one-two punch with Modern Family and The Middle. WaTaGuMp 09-30-09, 11:27 PM Ok this show so far just owns. Better this week then last week, I hope it continues cause its freaking funny so far. Tele-TV 10-01-09, 12:13 AM GREAT! show. There was nothing I really did not like about it. Except maybe the part where they try to decide what time to shoot (BB pellets), the son. :o Too many good parts to name. sangs 10-01-09, 06:32 AM "I just stole a child's intellectual property." "If we're here longer than 3, I'm gonna put a noose up there." "Was the bear in the passenger's seat?" Looks like this is going to be one of those shows where I struggle to decide what the best line of the episode is every week. I love it. rajmarie 10-01-09, 08:42 AM Good episode...& funny...better then last week..hope it can stay like that. The best episode...when the hot chick said...heres ur bike...that u were looking for when u were in my bedroom in front of that guy wife.... plus....when he said...I dont care what the old lady says...& then calls her to see if she is around before completing the sentence Lee L 10-01-09, 09:59 AM "my dad is way better with tools than you are. He can take the wheels off a car in less than a minute" alpha21 10-01-09, 11:26 AM "they're blowing bubbles" "how nice for............the kids" barth2k 10-01-09, 05:16 PM what was it that the wife said about the hot neighbor? I missed it. Indiana627 10-01-09, 05:48 PM Pretty sure the wife said the neighbor had already slept with 2 of the dads from school. Joseph Clark 10-01-09, 06:08 PM I just placed the jogging sexpot as the science leader of a volcano world visited by the Stargate Atlantis team. Sheppard's bravery wins her over McKay's (cowardly) brilliance. "Modern Family" is a cleverly written sitcom that keeps me alert, listening for the witty dialog. I watched Patricia Heaton's "The Middle" and Kelsey Grammer's "Hank," but I think their execution is far more formulaic and stale than "Modern Family." I'd predict that "Hank" would get yanked pretty fast, but Kelsey Grammer's cred should keep it on the air. Now I know where Jordan Hinson went after her stint on "Eureka." She's Hank's daughter. I had hopes of a Must See group of sitcoms on Wednesday night, but so far "Modern Family" is the only one I really care about. jamieva 10-01-09, 08:47 PM The wife said that the new hottie neighbor had already slept with 2 other dads from their kids school Bookworm 10-03-09, 08:20 AM what was it that the wife said about the hot neighbor? I missed it. When I miss something like that line, which I did in this case, I back up the DVR and hit mute to read the closed-captioning. :D Tom Imp 10-03-09, 11:47 AM So, I just had to know who that was who played the hot neighbor, so I looked it up. I couldn't believe that it was Krista Allen. I mean, she looked good and all, but time has not been too kind. She looked so much older than I remembered her and that stomach area wasn't looking so fit. If you don't know who she is, just do a Google image search (preferably with the filter off ;)) and see what she used to look like. If you don't know who she is, just do a Google image search (preferably with the filter off ;)) and see what she used to look like. If you're talking about the woman they met jogging while they were bike-riding that's not Krista Allen. Her name is Brandy Ledford. Brandy Ledford (http://www.tv.com/Brandy+Ledford/person/3021/summary.html?tag=cast_summary;guests;0) Here's a picture of her in costume. Brandy as Desiree (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3794307328/nm0496555) I don't know why IMDB has Krista listed in the episode cast as Desiree as well but it's obviously not her in the show that was broadcast. Maybe she was cast in the role and had to drop out for some reason. Joseph Clark 10-04-09, 02:04 PM Krista Allen (of Drew Carey fame) is Courtney Cox's best friend in Cougar Town. Her cosmetic surgery is obvious and not very well done. barth2k 10-04-09, 05:13 PM even though the characters are basically all stereotypes and the show gets no point for originality I'll be watching b/c I think it's pretty funny. If you want to see unoriginal and unfunny stereotype, see Hank! I also like this show better than Community, which tries too hard to be quirky and offbeat but ends up feeling like a comedy writing class rather than a show. keenan 10-04-09, 06:01 PM I think this show works because it's basically standup and sketch style comedy, there's the setup and the punchline, haven't seen much plot/story at all, just a seres of situations where the writers can produce funny outcomes. I realize that's what a sit-com is, but they do it extremely well here. The one-liners in this show are darn good as well. I thought Hank was terrible, I was thinking while watching that maybe Kelsey Grammer should stop trying to be the star and try an ensemble piece next time, I say next time because I'll be surprised if anyone even remembers this one by Jan. Grammer seems to be the same character in almost everything comedy he's done. jamieva 10-04-09, 11:06 PM It's good because you don't have the laugh track. You laugh when you think it's funny. URFloorMatt 10-04-09, 11:34 PM Krista Allen (of Drew Carey fame) is Courtney Cox's best friend in Cougar Town. Her cosmetic surgery is obvious and not very well done.I think you mean Christa Miller (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0588096/)? Bookworm 10-05-09, 08:32 AM Hehe, is this the mistaken identity thread? :D gruven42 10-05-09, 10:46 AM Good show. It's definitely playing on some stuff done before -- hopefully it will find its own soon. Overall good. Community remains the breakout comedy of the season so far. I can't believe how many people are still complaining about "shaky" camera work. Have they not seen any TV or movies in the last ten years? Tom Imp 10-05-09, 11:17 AM If you're talking about the woman they met jogging while they were bike-riding that's not Krista Allen. Her name is Brandy Ledford. Maybe she was cast in the role and had to drop out for some reason. I'm glad IMDb was wrong because I'm usually good at recognizing people, but I just took their word for it. Now I see they have two listed for Desiree as they probably realized the mistake. zeroendless 10-05-09, 09:56 PM I picked up two comedies this season, community and modern family - the latter is definately way ahead of community. The rests are pretty much junk. WaTaGuMp 10-07-09, 11:27 PM Did they run out of material already? Tonight's show was not very good. sayanythingrock 10-08-09, 12:00 AM Did they run out of material already? Tonight's show was not very good. What!!!! i thought tonights episode was moving really well. b/t the daughter and gloria and manny and claire Matt L 10-08-09, 01:10 AM I watched, I wasn't impressed. Trite, trite, trite. I canceled my season pass, there is nothing new or interesting here. The dad is still trying to be hip and cool, the father and the gay couple are stereotypes. I was hoping for better. At least it's not "According to Jim" bad, but it's not great writing by any stretch either. One by one I'm winnowing down my over loaded season passes. 21 minutes freed up... RemyM 10-08-09, 07:55 AM I thought it was a good one. Joseph Clark 10-08-09, 08:35 AM Certainly not the best episode to date, but "The Snob Goes to Costco" alone was worth the price of admission. :) Bluto17 10-08-09, 08:46 AM Strange. I thought it was the best of the three so far. petesimac 10-08-09, 09:01 AM Fewer LOL moments, but still there were a few; certainly enough to keep me watching. The Middle was the funnier of the two last night and still makes for a great 1-2 punch (ignoring Hank and Cougertown). WaTaGuMp 10-08-09, 09:24 AM I got a minor chuckle out of some of the things, but not even close to the laughs I had from the first 2. jamieva 10-08-09, 12:06 PM Least funny of the first 3 so far. The gay couple going to Costco was good Shaded Dogfood 10-08-09, 01:48 PM Good episode. The hispanic child is always funny, as is his mom. She's hotter, however. mbarloewen 10-08-09, 02:04 PM Personally, I thought episode 3 was far far funnier then episode 2. I like the series and it's passed its probationary period on my DVR schedule of recordings. RDK006 10-08-09, 06:07 PM For me, so far, this is the best new show (at least sitcom) of the season. Saw The Middle for the first time last night and it only made Modern Family seem that much better. dad1153 10-08-09, 06:17 PM "Modern Family" and two other ABC Wednesday sitcoms renewed for the 2009-10 season. Find out which two (and which ABC sitcom hasn't been renewed) on AVS' own "Hot Off The Press" thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17322424#post17322424. Matt L 10-09-09, 01:26 AM The middle aged dad and the gay couple are what is turning me off this show. The dad is a shlub, the trying to be with it angle is worn out and over done. He seems too smart to be that dumb and unfunny. The gay couple is just a stereotype. For me what would have been more interesting would be if they were just two regular guys that you would not know were gay if you bumped into them. This is just too obvious. The effete snob and the queen have been done to death. That said I think I'm dropping this show and keeping Cougar Town which for some reason I find much funnier. jamieva 10-09-09, 07:44 AM Cougar Town was funnier this week, probably their funniest episode so far. I agree on the middle dad. The "cool" dad angle is over played after 3 episodes, it's not funny anymore. RDK006 10-09-09, 12:38 PM The gay couple is just a stereotype. For me what would have been more interesting would be if they were just two regular guys that you would not know were gay if you bumped into them. This is just too obvious. The effete snob and the queen have been done to death. I guess so. Unless you know a couple - as i do - who are just like them! jamieva 10-14-09, 10:00 PM Tonight was the best episode so far. Hilarious from start to finish with no let ups sayanythingrock 10-14-09, 10:56 PM i agree tonights episode was fantastic. The mulch guy and juice bar bit was awesome. And the song at the end so so good Matt L 10-14-09, 11:10 PM I killed my season pass tonight. There were interesting parts, but the broad comedy was over the top. Shelly Long being hauled out of the wedding and managing to destroy the cake was just too obvious as is much of the stuff in the show. The dad in the bedroom scene was just too ridiculous too, Malt Shop? Come on. Then the Dylan kid singing, who didn't know he was going to blow it at any moment. I guess I was looking for a show with a bit more subtle comedy, and a bit more insight, this show is not it. jamieva 10-14-09, 11:20 PM You killed it tonight instead of last week? I thought last week was really weak. They are characters, how much do you expect them to change over 4 episodes? We know the dad is the wanna be young dad. I thought Shelley Long was fantastic. WaTaGuMp 10-15-09, 12:07 AM I loved the wedding when Shelly was talking about how her ex husbands wallet and his new wife's boobs matched. This episode was better then last week but the show has still lost some fizzle from the 1st two shows IMHO. Matt L 10-15-09, 12:46 AM jamieva -I give a new show 3 or 4 outings to grab me, or at least interest me. I like the premise, I like most of the actors, and I wanted to like it. Smart and subtle goes a long way in my book, and I was hoping they would take that route with the show. About the only thing that is missing that would make this a total sitcom is a laugh track, I could just hear the snickers that would have accompanied the bit where the brother refers to "Mommy' and the sister quickly refers to "Daddy". That was poor writing to me. The part I though was a bit unusual was the part when Dylan spoke up, I wasn't expecting that, but they killed it with the song going where it shouldn't have. Would any teen boy sing those lyrics to his girls entire family? Unless he was a total idiot he would not. A non-sitcom kid would have just started humming and mention it was a work in progress and leave it at that. Joseph Clark 10-15-09, 01:20 AM Yeah, this isn't the place to go looking for realistic. That's why I like it. The over the top characters and dialogue are what I hope they can maintain, along with the kernels of family truth that keep it relatable. So far, they've carried it off pretty well as far as I'm concerned. Whether they can sustain the same level and keep me interested is what I'm looking forward to finding out. RemyM 10-15-09, 07:33 AM Some of you take this show way to serious. It's a comedy and I though last night's episode was hilarious. jamieva 10-15-09, 08:29 AM MattL it's a sitcom not a reality show. I think you totally missed the boat on the issue of the kid playing the song. petesimac 10-15-09, 08:33 AM Great episode; best new comedy in a long time. The Middle is very good as well but will probably get canceled by the series killer ABC. gruven42 10-15-09, 09:46 AM This is one of those shows that I refuse to analyze to death. If I stop laughing, I'll stop watching. McDonoughDawg 10-15-09, 10:45 AM You might meet gay couples in the workplace arena that both seem straight...but you would rarely meet a gay couple in a more relaxed setting that at least in some part didn't seem "gay"..I mean nothing bad and I'm not saying it 100%, but the very few gay couples I've been around, all seemed to be somewhat like the couple on this show. His and hers, if you know what I mean. :) Anyways, anything with Salma Hayek on it is worth watching. jamieva 10-15-09, 10:16 PM Except that is not Selma Hayek. DeeKaye07 01-20-10, 08:20 PM I swear this show is getting better each week. One of my favorite scenes from the 1/20 show -- when Cam was trying to get the florist to come over to exchange his flowers and give him new ones because he was "very displeased" with them. DGK Joseph Clark 01-20-10, 09:45 PM I tried out the new comedies this season, and with the exception of this one, I've removed them from my DVR list. I liked this show, but I wondered if they might have trouble maintaining the humor. How stupid was that? Modern Family continually gets better. It's a perfect cast for the concept, it's brilliantly written, it's always fresh and fun, and the pacing is spot on. I related to this episode particularly - from marveling at how bright friends of mine are totally incapable of understanding a universal remote to having trouble myself with Prius voice commands.
