View Full Version : Smallville: Season 9 (The CW)
10 years is a long time for this kind of show.
I could be wrong, but has any other super-hero themed show lasted 10 seasons? I can't think of one. I know the 1960s Batman had a lot of episodes with longer seasons than we shoot today... but also those were half-hour episodes and didn't run for 10 years.
That's a lot of mileage to get out of one concept... especially a super-hero one.
I'd say it's about time.
Wonder what kind of cameos we'd get? Kara? Lana? Lex?
Next season (10) being the last was pretty much a given. Annette O'Toole and Michael Rosenbaum were both rumored to return (and she did briefly). I guess someone else could portray Luthor, but I'd rather have the original.
JeffAHayes 05-20-10, 04:32 AM I think it would be really neat (if a somewhat tired cliche) to have pretty much ALL of the long-dead (or gone) "good" characters... "Jimmy Olsen," "Papa John Schneider," "Mom/Red Queen/Annette O'Toole," "Lana" and any others I haven't thought of or who were in the show before I started watching, return for at least a one-episode cameo somehow "posessed" by some evil force that's been unleashed and both raises the dead and inhabits the living bodies of those close to Kal El... And then Clark has to KILL them all -- either for the first time, or the second -- to save humanity from them in their new, evil states.
That's at least one interesting concept they could play with... Maybe not with all of them, but perhaps with SOME of them. They could also possibly do the reverse with some dead and/or vanquished baddies, such as Lex or Lionel Luthor, i.e., have them come back somehow "redeemed" by some powerful "light" that has inhabited them (only maybe it'll also have a dark side to it)?
Who knows? I'm grasping at straws as to what they'll do with the final season.
Jeff
They will also have to introduce a new character for Clark to anguish about revealing his secret, but yet not do so, and thus cause that new character to stumble into bad situations because of not knowing.
Then there will be things Clark is oblivious to, that he should notice going on right in front of him... and several characters will need to do things out-of-character and then contradict themselves over the course of several episodes, in ways that make no sense at all.
:)
To hell with the old, bring on the new!!! This season has been so good because the writers have come up with fresh, new ideas.
I really, really hope we see Bruce Wayne (if not Batman) make an appearance.

I think I would rather see a young, hot Wonder Woman.

chestnu1 05-20-10, 07:52 PM Is it to much to ask for both?
Just saw the "Absolute Justice" (repeat) episode; man, that was hot!!
JeffAHayes 05-21-10, 12:48 AM I don't know about Batman or Wonder Woman, but I certainly wouldn't mind some sort of cameos by Adam West, Linda Carter and a few others who were the originals to play some of these classic characters on TV (Burt Ward {Robin} is still alive, too, as is Lee Meriwether, who played Catwoman.)
The original "Superman" TV series was so long ago (1950s) I don't know if anyone's alive, or would be remembered, but there's "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman." Of course one half of THAT duo is busy with her own popular drama ("Desperate Housewives"), and I just had to look up the show to see who actually played Clark, then look up Dean Cain to see if he's busy, since I mostly seem to see him in bad B movies, these days... Bad, or not, however, the dude has already had ONE cameo on "Smallville" (2007: Dr. Curtis Knox) and currently has 6 films in post-production, one filming, 3 in pre-production and one in production, so I'm guessing his "plate is full."

chestnu1 05-21-10, 10:07 AM Dr Knox was that character who was an immortal, and inferred to be Vandal Savage wasn't he?
You are correct.
HobeSoundDarryl 05-21-10, 05:12 PM Linda Carter has already done a cameo on Smallville as well. I think she played Chloe's crazy(?) mother a couple of seasons ago. She was in a Luthor lab and had a "freak of the week" power. I can't recall if they killer her or she just got moved to some other lab, never to be heard from (or looked for) again.
I'm pretty sure they ended it with her being catatonic again.
If they do bring back Wonder Woman, I nominate Sarah Lancaster from Chuck.
I thought it had been established that Batman & Wonder Woman were off-limits for Smallville because their rights were tied up for the movies (or potential movie in the case of WW).
That's why we got Green Arrow, Martian Manhunger, Supergirl (kara), Cyborg, Impulse, Black Canary, Aquaman, Hawkman, Stargirl, Starman, Dr Fate, Sandman (I feel like I'm forgetting someone)... basically DC super-heroes that weren't licensed already. We did get a brief glimpse of a Green Lantern Ring in "Absolute Justice" but no actual Green Lantern, since that movie is coming soon.
Robin, for some reason, is not always tied to the Batman license... but even if possible, Robin without Batman wouldn't make much sense.
I'm too lazy to re-read the thread to see what we were talking about last year... but I just finished re-watching Season 8 on Blu. Had it for a while, but never got around to watching again until now.
I had forgotten they never explained how the fortress crystal (start of the season when the fortress had imploded) got to Tess... but I can live with it being found in the Arctic.
They didn't, however, explain who stole it from Tess... or who sent it to Clark... and oddly, Clark never seemed to care who sent it... and Tess similarly stopped worrying whatever happened to it at some point.
There was a cryptic message sent to Tess that said "You aren't ready for this yet"... and it was signed with a red X.
I remember speculation that maybe "Lex" was playing games with her, but Lex wouldn't have sent the crystal to Clark. Then Lana was texting someone cryptically, and they never explained who...
but after this season, it struck me... the signature was a RED "X"... so I'm wondering if the whole Martha as Red Queen was in the writers' minds last season? Clark explained in one of this season's final episodes that his mom had told him she inherited the "Kryptonian library" after Lionel died... so that would go back far enough to explain that Martha could have in fact acquired the crystal from Tess.
Of course, that wouldn't explain why Martha Red Queen didn't know about the Kandor "orb" and try to stop that.
Also.. they never really explained where that orb came from... but I found it interesting that Tess seemed to think that Doomsday had to be killed before the Kandorians were freed... but in retrospect, I'm now thinking something different entirely.
First, Tess destroyed a crystal so Clark couldn't send people to the Phantom Zone... supposedly to force him to kill Doomsday... but now I'm thinking it was to prevent Clark from being able to send Kandorians into the Phantom Zone. Also, Doomsday probably would have killed everyone, so it makes sense they needed to wait for him/it to be dealt with before making an appearance.
Anyway, just some random thoughts for last season that seemed different to me after having watched this season.
Robin, for some reason, is not always tied to the Batman license... but even if possible, Robin without Batman wouldn't make much sense.
The Teen Titans animated series used Robin for its full 5 season without mentioning Batman once. Robin/Nightwing would be an excellent fit in Smallville.
That said, if they're not going to have a young Bruce Wayne (sans Batman) make an appearance why not have someone like Ralph Dibny (Elastic Man)? I doubt his license is tied up in any projects and it would be a fun episode to have DC's second greatest detective show up.
I'm not particularly well-versed in the DC universe, but didn't Pete pretty much play that part in his Season 7 cameo?

Pete was semi-channeling Jimmy's Elastic Lad from the comics... so it was kind of a made-up-for-Smallville thing there.
Back to Robin.. There wouldn't be a logical reason to have Robin in Metropolis, especially if you can't mention Batman at all... It would be good to have Bruce Wayne/Batman... but if they can't do that, I'd rather not have them do Robin as a sideways reference...
Robin would either have to be too young to really be a peer to Clark, and we've already seen the young-hero dynamic on Smallville... or they'd have to go with Nightwing, and that would feel too much like Batman-light to me.
I like the idea of the Elongated Man, though.
Rammitinski 05-22-10, 03:37 PM Where the heck is Mon-El (Lar Gand)? He's a Justice Leaguer, and he should be the one to finally teach Clark to fly (since it's not gonna be Kara).
That would really be the most logical and appropriate choice, since he's basically a clone of him as far as powers, and Clark considers him his long-lost, big brother, albeit from another planet (Daxam).

That would really be the most logical and appropriate choice, since he's basically a clone of him as far as powers, and Clark considers him his long-lost, big brother, albeit from another planet (Daxam).Mon-El would be more appropriate to the Legion of Superheroes. Anyways, he's such an unknown character to most what would be the point? With only one season left let's hope they bring in some of the more well known characters.
Clark doesn't need anyone to "teach him" how to fly. He's already had training from Jor-El and should be able to fly as soon as he gets past his own hang-ups (I bet we'll see it in the final episode next season).
Rammitinski 05-22-10, 04:02 PM You don't think a "finding a long-lost brother just like him" storyline for at least an episode or two would be a welcome diversion from that monotonous "Zod" and "Tess" (and Lois acting dumb) crap we've had to put up with for pretty much every episode straight throught the last, couple of seasons?
I just thought it was an idea that might liven the show up a little, anyway. Heck, I'd even welcome them bringing the "FOTW" theme back occasionally just to break the monotony (well - almost).
Doesn't really have to be Mon-El. Anyone would do at this point, really. This season's been a drag, otherwise.

Well, since Clark just dealt with an entire army of people like him, met his Dad (in younger form), and had a cousin hang around for an entire season who were all "just like him" (except they could actually FLY), I don't think that would be very interesting at all -- not even for an episode or two.

Yep... It's starting to look like more Kryptonians survived their planet than were alive back in the day! :)
That "last son of Krypton" thing loses a little edge when they are popping up like daisies.
Rammitinski 05-22-10, 11:04 PM I wanna see some Krypto, Comet, Streaky and Beppo myself.
JeffAHayes 06-02-10, 03:23 AM Unless there actually is some sort of contractural no-flights/no-tights thing going on with "Smallville," I think it's possible Season 10 will begin with either Kal El (or possibly J 'on -- hope I spelled that right) pulling that blue Kryptonite knife out on the way down, and then Kal El flying away before he hits the pavement...
Assuming the crystal that sent all the other Kryptonians wherever they went is still active until someone removes it, it might HAVE to be J'on to do it, since he's the only one left on the planet (that we know of) who's both fast enough -- and can also fly -- who could get there in time to both remove the crystal AND get to Clark and pull that blue knife out.
I guess we'll find out in September, huh?
Jeff
In case you guys don't already know Allison Mack (Chloe) is leaving the series after the first few episodes.
Rammitinski 06-02-10, 06:22 PM It was in a press release and was already reported here.
JeffAHayes 06-02-10, 10:40 PM Yeah, Allison was quoted as saying something to the effect that "in loyalty to my very devoted fans, I'm coming back for a few episodes to properly wrap up my character."
I'm not sure where I read that quote -- if it was a link provided here or in EW -- but it was part of a brief interview clip with Allison Mack about the fact that she's leaving the show, and I agree with Rammi that it's public knowledge.
Jeff

Gingold made Elongated Man stretchy. Jimmy Olsen drank a potion invented by Professor Potter that made him stretchy. Two different drinks altogether.
archiguy 06-03-10, 08:00 AM One of the oddest things that disturb spoilerphobics is discussion of casting news. Considering that stuff is posted all over print, online, and televised entertainment outlets and doesn't really divulge plot or storyline development, it's one of their most perplexing, yet endearing traits. ;)
Any fan of the show is going to hear about cast members being tossed, re-signed, or committed to another show or show-pilot; it's nearly impossible to avoid. On the plus side, it gives obsessed fans something to speculate about. That's an activity they tend to enjoy. Nobody seemed too bothered by the fact that it was general knowledge about Michael Rosembaum not returning to the show last year; why should news about Allison Mack be any different?

As much as I want to hope and pray that he removes the kryptonite dagger and flies away the fact that the crystal is still active means that he will probably get saved by martain manhunter or possibly hawkman and we will get teased with flight for another half a season.
Gingold made Elongated Man stretchy. Jimmy Olsen drank a potion invented by Professor Potter that made him stretchy. Two different drinks altogether.I did not know that. Thanks. Silver age thing- it's not even listed on the Jimmy Olsen Wiki.

That's rather naive don't you think?
Gee, maybe some people watch the entertainment TV dreck, or read casting news in....casting news daily?
Rammitinski 06-03-10, 01:34 PM It was in a press release and was already reported here.On 5/9/10 - Page 16, post #457, to be precise.
It's not as if we gave away the plot. They actually had this news in Entertainment Weekly which has a lag time of a few weeks, so it's hardly a "spoiler". If you have a problem with casting info I suggest you not follow this thread, because that is the sort of thing we've been discussing since the beginning.
That said it's no great shakes that Allison Mack is leaving the show because it's in its final season anyways.
What!?? :eek:Are you surprised season 10 is the final season? We've been discussing that for a while now- Tom Welling announced (http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2010/05/smallville-final-season-tom-welling-wants-lex-and-lana-to-return.html) it a few weeks back.
Sarcasm, dude. It was already a given "10" would be the last season. I knew that before Tom's announcement and I said this exact thing several pages ago.
What was interesting in his announcement is his desire to have Lex and Lana come back for the final season- (unlikely to happen), usually Tom is so softspoken he very rarely comments on the show at all.
It was strongly rumored that Rosenbaum would return. Personally, I'd welcome that. Maybe he could wear a skin-cap...but I guess not.
Wow, I've never seen Welling interviewed in 9 years of this show!
The way I remember it... Rosenbaum was the one who wanted to shave his head to start with... something about the importance of the character being really bald and not having a distracting prosthetic that people would always know was fake.
It isn't like on Star Trek where they force you into Klingon makeup... Smallville originally would have been fine with the bald-wig/cap... but Rosenbaum made the point (and I think a strong one) to have Lex really be as real as he could make it. I'd hate to see him come back for a swan song and wear a bald cap at this point.
As I was re-watching the first 2 Karate Kid movies last night (bought the Blu rays) a bit of inspired Smallville casting occurred to me...
Most people don't know that "The Karate Kid" was a DC comics character and member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Granted, the movies really had little to do with the comic character, but they did have to license the rights to the name from DC and that appears in the movie credits.
So... with the Legion already in Smallville lore now... I thought it might be fun to have an episode with Ralph Machio playing a previous-generation martial arts-based hero.
So... with the Legion already in Smallville lore now... I thought it might be fun to have an episode with Ralph Machio playing a previous-generation martial arts-based hero.I don't really get your logic here. Then you could say any licensed DC character for whatever reason should play a part in Smallville.
I don't really get your logic here. Then you could say any licensed DC character for whatever reason should play a part in Smallville.
The logic here is... the DC comic Karate Kid character was a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Smallville has already incorporated the Legion of Super-Heroes into the show and had "Cosmic Boy" on twice.
Here's another Legion character that they could include and at the same time nod to another series. They've done this before by having Lynda Carter play Chloe's mother or Dean Cain play Vandal Savage.
And I could be wrong... but I don't remember a Smallville episode regarding martial arts... and some of the lessons from Karate (like building self-confidence and self-control) would actually benefit the ever-wavering Clark on the show.
I get what you're saying, but outside of the name the Karate Kid movie has absolutely nothing to with the DC character.
JeffAHayes 06-08-10, 10:17 PM The way I remember it... Rosenbaum was the one who wanted to shave his head to start with... something about the importance of the character being really bald and not having a distracting prosthetic that people would always know was fake.

Going off topic for a bit, but... Speaking of Rosenbaum, I caught a movie on Pay cable the other night that came out about the time the first season of "Smallville" was ending, starring him and a couple other guys I didn't really know called "Sorority Boys." It wasn't a particularly highly rated flick, although I kinda got a kick out of it -- sort of like a twist on the "Bosom Buddies" concept. Rosenbaum and two of his fraternity buddies are leaders in this fraternity who get framed for robbing the fraternity's safe full of cash and kicked out (they're all three horndogs well known for being sexist pricks). They decide to crash the fraternity party to try to find the security tape of the safe by dressing as women, but they make what most of the fraternity leaders consider "dogs," so they get kicked out before they can implement their plan...
Anyway, when they get kicked out, the leader of a sororotiy whose Greek initials actually spell out DOG (yeah, this movie AIN'T subtle) comes to them and tries to comfort them and asks them to join her sorority, which, as you might guess, is FULL OF, ahem, well, let's just say, SHE's a SMOKER (toned down by wearing glasses and looking geeky), but the rest -- WOOOHOOO! At first they resist, but then they do, and of course all sorts of hilarilty ensue.
Long story short, I was rather surprised... Rosenbaum -- who was actually 29 when he made THAT movie (he'll be 38 in July!) actually didn't make a halfway bad looking woman!!! And the one guy (who fell in love with the gal who rushed them -- who, like I said was a smoker), looked so darned good dressed like a woman it scared me! I have to tell you, it's more than enough to make you take VERY close looks at "women" in public, lol. (The third guy was ugly as a man OR a woman, lol.)
At any rate, if any of you guys or gals get a chance to watch "Sorority Boys," it's not as bad as you might think (I actually missed the first few minutes before they got framed, so I didn't get to see how bad they were in the beginning)... These three sexist pricks learn what it's like to "be a woman" and become A LOT more sensitive, and when they finally get vindicated, suddenly their fraternity is a lot more sensitive and open to girls for more than just their looks, as well.
And for the record, I'd love to see a cameo with Lex and/or Lana -- especially Lana... I know a lot of you (Rammi, you KNOW I'm talking to you, lol) -- are more than worn out with the Lana character, BUT I thought the newly empowered, tough-as-nails Lana was a much-improved character... I see no reason Lex couldn't come back WITH hair -- just sort of all screwed up hair -- due to all the things he was exposed to when he was killed, or whatever it was that happened to him, lol. I'd like to see Lana come back as a MAJOR badass!
Jeff
Yeah, I've seen that movie. You forget to mention the guys are in the Kappa Omicron Kappa fraternity (a clever backronym like the DOG sorority), and the main character is played by Barry Watson of 7th Heaven fame. Third guy is comedian Harland Williams.
Funny watch if you've got nothing better to see on TV, probably on Comedy Central. When he's not wearing the girl-wig, it's interesting to see Rosenbaum with actual hair. I've seen some pictures of him at events during the summers off from Smallville with short haircuts, but yeah, he shaved it bald for the Lex role.
Rammitinski 06-09-10, 01:43 AM I know a lot of you (Rammi, you KNOW I'm talking to you, lol) -- are more than worn out with the Lana character, BUT I thought the newly empowered, tough-as-nails Lana was a much-improved character...
Just the old Lana - but I liked the new one, too. Quite a bit, actually (although she did have a couple of moments with Clark where she reverted back to her former, over-dramatic, teen-angst whininess).
HDntheCity 07-01-10, 02:42 PM The "Book of Rao" thing bugs me... it was just snuck into the plot a few episodes ago, and magically is the solution to the whole Kandorian problem. I would have felt a LOT better if Rao had been introduced earlier in the season as something to build towards... and if there had been more direction to the Kandorian plotline in general. It really seemed to meander as if the writers couldn't decide which direction to go.
Also... wonder about the mysterious knitting lady outside Tess' room.
just saw the finale(been a VERY chaotic month here, plus a miserable heat wave).
the ending left me a bit cold-the Book of Rao device is classic Deus Ex Machina in reverse i.e. the "gods" are sucked up into the ether rather than descending to put things right.
did like the opening teaser with "Metropolis World's Fair 2013"(and BTW Lois is right-the whole Mayan 2012 thing is nonsense. Watch the History Ch's "Apocalypse Island" crypto-documentary to see how absurd some of the theories are-the "gamma pulse" one being particularly silly.)
sorry to hear of Allison Mack's early departure. I'm sure she'll move on to bigger & better things both in front of & behind the camera.
Oh & archiguy if you want to see Annette O'Toole REALLY smokin' check out the '80's remake of CAT PEOPLE!!!!

I guess Impulse and Aquaman aren't early members of this Justice League. Interesting.
considering the annoyance level of Impulse & the (non) acting talent of the muscle-head who played Aquaman I say thank goodness & good riddance!
they grated on my nerves so much in the JUSTICE episode of 2-3 seasons ago I was rooting for Lex Luthor!
film113 07-01-10, 02:59 PM considering the (non) acting talent of the muscle-head who played Aquaman I say thank goodness & good riddance!
Probably why he was replaced with Justin Hartley for the AQUAMAN pilot.
HDntheCity 07-01-10, 02:59 PM I too, noticed that the Fortress was strangely quite. I wonder why..
it was a season or 2(or 3?) ago but have we forgotten it was cyber-infected by Brainiac?
it was a season or 2(or 3?) ago but have we forgotten it was cyber-infected by Brainiac?
That was supposedly taken care of... and the fortress has spoken since then. It just went silent at some point this season without explanation.
OF course, we all know it was because they couldn't get Terrance Stamp available... but they should have written something into the show to explain why the fortress went silent.
Take Two 07-06-10, 01:29 AM ^^It's a classic TV staple...the fortress had a bad case of laryngitis. :D
manmaoyy 07-08-10, 09:57 PM It's fine to like the actress or not (Tess vs Lana)... but to be fair, ALL the problems with the character on the show Tess/Lana is really a problem with the writing. Lana was always written inconsistently, so I have no way of knowing how good or bad Kreuk was as an actress. I have the same feeling about Tess... she was shoehorned into the show and shoehorned into scenes... and that falls on the shoulders of the writer/producer/director much more than the actress.
Go watch the SciFi channel's 3 hour "movie", Earthsea. Kristin Kreuk is in it. But it feels more like Lana is in the movie. I've decided that the character Lana isn't distinguishable from the actor that plays her, because Kristin Kreuk can't act, and is just being herself on camera.
I also agree that the writters don't seem to know what to do with Tess.

manmaoyy 07-08-10, 10:04 PM Yeah, no spoiler that John Corbin is Metallo.
Anyways, I just watched the episode and thought, aw damn, you mean to tell me this whole season is going to be one long time travel arc? Crap.
Can we get a freaking pair of glasses on the set? PLEASE? ANYONE?

Guest stars are much of a spoiler as we'll know it as soon as the episode plot summaries arrive. (although I won't look to keep it a little secret).
I'm still holding out hope we have a young Bruce Wayne showing up in the show's final season. Seeing as he's rich and approx the same age as Oliver Queen (and both being of old money), the would probably travel in the same circles.

No it's not a promo so you won't see it unless you look for it. It's something from Comic-Con.
ajaronis 09-17-10, 09:30 AM Looking forward to it. I have high hopes for this season. Sucks though, the station that broadcast it locally is the only station that I can't pull in off my antenna for some reason. So, I won't be watching it in HD, or TV at all. I'll have to watch it online on my computer. :(
