Our SA cable box/dvr crapped out and so they gave us a Samsung SMT-H3270 DVR as a replacement. It doesn't seem much different than the old one, except that everything works faster. However, I cannot get the picture in picture to work. Does this Samsung model have PIP? The guy at Time Warner said that the pip is a function of our TV, but that's inaccurate because the native PIP on the TV looks different than the old pip did, plus it does not work with the box. They left no manual... sigh. I thought maybe someone here would be more competent than TW customer support...
All of the buttons on the remote work except the pip buttons. We actually have a second remote and it's the same way. The only thing that changed in the setup was the DVR. The PIP worked fine with the old SA DVR.
I agree with you that PIP was definitely a feature on the Scientific Atlanta DVRs. I can't get it to work by pressing the PIP buttons on the Synergy remote from Time Warner.
I might try to use the PIP feature of my TV, but the problem with that is that only one signal can come from the cable box. The other signal will have to be an unscrambled signal (no HBO, etc), and can't be something recorded on the DVR.
You'll probably get better response with your question here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=30&f=42). This forum specializes more in DVD recorders, not DVRs.
You may want to search that forum for an existing thread on your model DVR, that forum doesn't really like the one off questions in separate threads but prefers to keep things in a dedicated thread. If none exists it should be fine to start a new thread.

I just got mine today, and the tech who installed it told me right off the bat that the PIP feature is not available on this model of dvr. Since I don't use it, it really didn't concern me, but he did say before he left that if I changed my mind, I should call TW and have them put in a work order to replace the dvr.
The Samsung 3260/3270 lack the hardware needed to support PIP. Looking to the future, I would not expect to see PIP on upcoming TWC DVRs. The Samsung DVRs run TWC's OCAP software, and that OCAP software must run on a variety of platforms, many of which will lack the hardware for PIP.
The Samsung DVRs can support a number of other improvements not possible on the older Cisco and Scientific Atlanta DVRs, such as a high-definition interface and menus.
