My dmr-ea18k is not consistently recording closed captions. The unit is plugged into my pvr via S video and audio L/R cables then via HDMI to my Samsung ln46a650. I'm recording programs to dvd that are saved on the pvr and am not getting the closed captions consistently. I am playing the shows back w/the CC on while recording and the closed captions setting turned on in the dmr-ea18k setup. I turned off the subtitle option as the manual states there could be a conflict when there are subtitles and cc present. I recorded a bunch of Clone Wars cartoons for the kids and the cc recorded fine. I also recorded the movies Atonement and Shrek and neither plays back w/the cc. I've tried recording the same movies w/different settings but no success. Any ideas before I keep wasting blank dvds? :(
Thanks, Dave

It's a great question. I would also like to know. I'm the opposite, I was recording Live at Abbey Road and I could get rid of the closed captions.

Thank you!

I tried an experiment with my Tivo HD, Sony HDTV and Panasonic DVDRs. I found the following:
Playing a commercial DVD on my Panasonic DVDR via HDMI the only way I was able to get subtitles was by accessing the subtitle menu on the DVDR, the TV's CC control did nothing.
Playing my Panasonic hooked via component(set to 480p) was similar.
Playing my Panasonic hooked via component(set to 480i) I was able to get CC by pushing my TVs CC or accessing my Pannys CC settings.
Playing a title that I know has CC on my Tivo(hooked via HDMI set to 1080i) was similar, I could only access CC by my Tivo's setting.

For recording setting the DVDRs CC to ON made no difference in the outcome of the recorded disc.
What I deduce from my tests is the following:
CCs are NOT passed via HDMI.
CCs are NOT passed via Component when set to 480p or above, only 480i.

My experience is the same as yours. CC is not acessable by your television is using HDMI or component (other than 480i). In fact, my newest televison does not allow me to select CC settings on an HDMI input, or a component input unless it's 480i. The closed captioning information has to come from whatever is feeding the television.
