View Full Version : Buying camcorders online.
lifeisbeautiful 09-29-09, 04:14 PM Folks-
I would want to buy a camcorder online. I've decided the model and I'm looking at the online buying options. I know Amazon (I have bought a lot of stuff there, without any issues). Could folks recommend other sites (newegg.com..?? etc..) and share their experience?
I don't mind paying a little bit more. But, I want a good buying experience. Things like good return policy in case the item is defective etc.
Thanks.
I've gotten many cameras from B&H, Adorama, J&R, 42nd Street Photo, Abe's, etc. without a problem.
Francois Caron 09-29-09, 05:09 PM I've used Adorama and J&R for shipments to Canada. The shipping charges are a bit steep ($35), but the shipping time is overnight! I have trouble getting that in my own country! :)
ericjut 09-29-09, 06:27 PM B&H, J&R and Newegg would be my first suggestions. I've dealt with them countless of times and was already a great experience.
Then, there are plenty of other sites, like Abe's, DBuys and others, which will try to "bait and switch" (call you to try to sell you accessories, warranties, etc) and may delay the shipping of your order if you don't buy them. I'm not saying they're not legit or anything, but personally I don't trust those places as much as the 3 I listed above, which never called me to offer expensive extras.
To know if a reseller is doing "bait and switch", make sure to go to multiple reseller's ratings sites and read the non-5 star reviews. If you see recurring reviews on the matter, be prepared to get called by a pushy rep and/or not getting your order shipped right away. There are some review sites:
http://www.resellerratings.com/
http://www.bizrate.com/
http://reviews.pricegrabber.com/
http://www.yelp.com/
As usual, be careful about:
- Overly positive or negative reviews, as they may be false and/or intentionally biased.
- Reviews about the site instead of the shopping experience (who cares about a 5 star rating because the site is cool?)
- Small reviews like "Great transaction. Would use them again." or duplicates, as those are clearly not from real customers.
When in doubt, I would suggest buying from the big guys (Amazon, J&R, B&H) or buy local. It so much harder for somebody to ignore you when you're in front of them to return the defective unit. :)
Chevypower 09-29-09, 06:47 PM Thoughts-Of-Dave website usually has up-to-date reports on Bait and Switch stores, and all the different website names and company names the same companies go by. Basically, if the price looks too good to be true, then it is.
canonhd 09-29-09, 07:23 PM I've used Buydig.com and Abt.com for camcorders. Great experience overall.
Steve McD 09-30-09, 05:13 AM I recommend Vann's. Always good prices and they will match other legitimate dealers. They also give a 100% refund, if you return an item undamaged within 15 days. Usually, they give free shipping and don't try to push accessories on you.
libertyski 10-01-09, 04:39 PM I don't buy from Newegg anymore. They have great prices, but as soon as I had a defective item they were less then helpful. My experience was that they really lacked the customer service skills. So go elsewhere if you want to make sure you will have a good return experience should you need to do that.

I bought a Canon HG10 this week from TigerDirect and had a great experience so far. My order processed and shipped the same day and I got it within the 2 day shipping window promised. For them I also linked to them through Bing.com, so I get 5% cash back through Bing.
I saw a post above with a complaint about NewEgg returns. Back in June I bought some RAM for a white 13" MacBook. Before I installed the RAM, I exchanged my MB for one of the new unibody MacBook Pro's that just came out. Anyway, last week NewEgg approved my RMA even though it was beyond their return policy for RAM. Yesterday I received notice that it was processed and credited back to my CC, so I have no problems with them.
Besides NewEgg and TigerDirect, I have had 100% good experiences with buy.com as well...
marcolisi 10-04-09, 09:34 AM Hi guys, soom I will get my degree and I am going to have a party.
People want to make me a present, and I would like to have a camcorder.
It is possible for me to say to people to go a store and partecipate with money to the buy of the camcorder.
Unfortunatelly there is no store in italy that sell the panasonic tm350.
I have to buy it on ebay but how the people can give the money for the present ?
Do u have any suggestion ?
thank you
john barlow 10-04-09, 10:25 AM J&R has about the best customer service I've ever experienced. They price match too. I wish they would open some B&M stores nation wide to compete with BB.
stay away from buy.com as they usually are not authorized & they sell your CC info to 3rd parties who can charge it via the fine print upon checkout.
B&H, J&R, Adorama, Abes, Amazon would all be top choices.
