I have 3 options.

54" G10
54" S1
58" S1

I currently have a 56" Samsung DLP, so I still want to have a tv around that size which is why I won't even consider anything less than 54". I'm not quite at peace with losing 2", but I do know that I will get the best affordable PQ if I get the 54" G10. Now the 54" G10 and the 58" S1 are about the same price the S1 is only like $20 more on amazon. I would really love to have the 58" S1 because I know I get a bigger tv than I have now and a better picture. So to me it's like a win win. On the other hand as many here seem to be saying the G10 offers better PQ over the S1, but me losing that 2" will always be nagging in the back of my mind. I am asking for a good and honest feedback on the PQ quality difference between the G10 and S1 and which should I go with? In other words is the G10 worth the lose of 2" (which in my mind seems like a bit of a downgrade) I have been to 2 Best Buy stores so far and have only seen the S1 and lesser models on display, I have not seen a G10 that I can compare to the S1as of yet. The 54" S1 is just there because it's pretty much $200 cheaper than both and would leave me with money to do other things.

Thanks

i have the 54g and i really like the picture...

i haven't compared the s1 but from what i understand the picture is not that far off from the g10...just more picture settings which gives you a more accurate color...

my suggestion is try the 58 s1 at home and see if the picture is good enough...if not exchange it for the 54g...

oh, i just realized you are getting it online, so you just can't exchange it...

somebody else will chime in...paging randywalters...:D

54G10 since you also consider 54S10.

54G10 since you also consider 54S10.

I consider it only because it's almost $400 cheaper than the 54"G10 and 58"S1. But mostly my choices are between the 54"G10 (for the best PQ out of the bunch) or the 58"S1 (for the bigger size and some upgrade of the PQ compared to my current set).

I've already commented on the difference in PQ between my G10 and my friends and "stepson's" 50S1s but for me it would boil down to this: With the 58" S1 you'll be losing a little skin tone accuracy so you have to weigh that against losing 2" of screen size, but the 58S1 will still be a big improvement over your DLP in picture quality. Another thing to consider is the larger 58" plasma panel will have larger pixels than the 54" panel so a 58" S1 will look a little softer than a 54" S1/G10. But since going down in screen size will bother you so much, you should probably just get the 58" S1 and not look back. :)

What do you mean by softer?

I usually go quality over quantity. Besides the bigger the screen usually the lower the quality since its being magnified that much more.

I want to add another choice/thought. 58" G10 (if they make them). Size is huge to you (no pun intendsd). You'd like a step up model (S1 to G10).

Wait and save for what you really want. Quality remains long after price is forgotten.

This is more a "heart" decision than a technology decision though, so good luck and definitely go bigger.

And another thing, don't worry about pixels being bigger or larger screen being softer. In your situation it's just not relevant. That's the spiel from people who didn't go BIG and are trying to rationalize their "mistake".

It sound like going bigger would really make you happy, and I think you will have some regrets inside of you if you stay the same size because I also thing you want a little change in your life and going from 54 to 58 would be a change picture on the s1 is from the way I understand going to be better then your dlp and once you make some picture adjustments, and from what I have read those adjustment are going to be posted by d-nice in the near future on the 12g tread, you will be very happy, also from what I have read there is some problems making adjustment on the g10 model when it is in the thx mode and it is my personel feelings that the difference in picture quality is not worth the extra money unless you are a tv conasure ( Im sure I spelled that wrong). good luck.

The S1 uses the same panel as the G10 and I've read that in theory it can be set to look the same as the G10. I don't know if it's true in practice.

Basically, what you'll be giving up is THX mode and an internet connection. I don't use either on my G15. You may be giving up some fine tuning capabilities that may or may not make your picture look better.

Based on what I read from your post, I think you should go with the 58".

Just coming back from a Best Buy that finally had a G10 on display. I like the design of the G10 a little better, the silver fade is different in a good way. It wasn't playing the same demo that the S1 was playing and they were pretty far apart I had to walk back and forth, I couldn't really make a good comparison of the two. I could kinda say that the G10 had a look as if there really wasn't a glass screen there, while the S1 looked like the screen was dirty, might have just been glare. Strangley enough a S1 and the even cheaper 720p X1 were right next to each other, and they looked pretty much the same, the S1 just had barely noticeable better colors, blacks were pretty close. I can't say that the G10 would have been greatly better in my eyes regarding PQ, I believe it would have been pretty subtle. I really didn't care for the THX setting looks alot like cinema or standard type setting to me. I feel that if I have the S1 calibrated I could get it to look as good if not better than a G10. So I think i'm going to go with the 58" S1, but I still will have to make a few trips to BB to make sure before buying. Thanks guys for the continued advise.

I had an Hitachi 57F59 CRT RPTV and was on the fence on which size to get.I looked at the 58" S1 and ended up with the 65" S1. I have no regrets at all.Mine is still in break-in mode and looks great out of the box. I sit about 9' away from the set.GO BIG

The 65" is a monster, I think I would have a difficult time getting it in my viewing area along with right and left front speakers lol. Enjoy it :)

720p is solid technology. One of the advantages, though, of 1080p is the ability to display a native 1080p image 1:1, but the typical Best Buy stores has enough problems just getting a video image up on their TVs - I'd doubt that even their Blu Ray connected TVs are configured to do 1:1.

One more factor to consider is that a 16:9 screen of a given dimension will function like a smaller 4:3 screen. So unless your Samsung DLP is 16:9, you will be losing more than the equivalent of 2 inches by dropping back to a 54 inch plasma screen. This happens because the limiting item around which images are composed are most commonly vertical or equiaxed elements (people, people's faces, etc.). So screen height is the limiting dimension. 16:9 screens are wider and shorter than 4:3, so for a given size the height is smaller and consequently the central image is shorter (smaller). I find that to be noticeable when I switched from a 52" rear projector TV to a 54" plasma. The picture is some much better, though, that it is more than worth the result.

I'd opt for the 58S1. You won't be happy going down in size (to the 54") and you'll still get a fantastic picture at a great price! :D

Personally, I wouldn't decrease screen size when buying a new tv. That said, as long as your happy with the picture on the S1, go 58".

It's been a though day of debating for me. The guy at best buy said they could price match amazon prices for me, only If I can really get a side by side comparison I can really be sure that I'm making the right choice one time only. In the past I have returned a set only a few days after owning it due to PQ not being up to par. From what I have seen of the S1 I think it is up to par, but knowing that the G10 is better PQ wise is in the back of my mind. Since I don't know how much better I can't really just say that it's worth losing the 2".

The S1 has less HDMI ports if that matters to you.

Have you considered the Samsung 63b550? Slightly smaller than the panny 65", and a great picture! :)
