Versus???
D* and NHLCI customer since 2002 also can't seem to find this 'versus' channel people are speaking of. Oh well, I have the NHLCI package and my home market team (the Avalanche) plays tonight. Let me check........oh, I see it is not being televised anywhere according to D* and NHLCI. Strange the opening game of the season and the Sakic retirement ceremony is not being televised anywhere tonight???? I thought D* advertised that NHLCI would carry all of the NHL games. Apparently not.

If the Avalanche game is a Versus (national tv contract) exclusive, NHL CI won't air it locally. Sure I'll be corrected if wrong.

The announcers on Wash at Boston are way to low.
I hear the crowd loudly on the Left, Right and Center Channels.
Boston doesn't look near as good on Versus as when it is shown by NESN. NESN may have the best PQ of all the HD channels/games. I really miss HDNet.
icemannyr 10-01-09, 10:24 PM I'll be interested to see if the Versus game looks cleaner on the NHL Network HD replay.
NHL Network is showing a look in from the SJ at COL Versus feed but the NHL Network studio show is not HD. :P
Cal1981 10-01-09, 10:38 PM Watching the San Jose - Colorado game on Versus(Comcast). Maybe it's the lights in the arena but the picture is on the dark side with a fair amount of uniform detail not showing well.

I agree, I came to the same conclusion, almost thought the Avs uniforms were all black until I saw a real close-up!
I thought the first game was pretty good but like Hugh said, no where near NESN quality. Also did not like the result but it is only one game. Watched via FIOS.
coyoteaz 10-02-09, 12:32 AM Versus continues to scrape the bottom of the HD sports barrel. The picture looks like someone turned the softening and sharpening filters up to 11, so everything is mush except for the edges which are razor sharp and have heavy ringing. The same smearing seen on college football is also present, though less noticeable since the ice is fairly uniform in color and lacking in detail. The 5.1 audio is clearly an upmix from stereo since the crowd is in the center channel stepping on the announcers. The same problems were present in the live lookins from CBC's coverage, so I'm guessing everything is great leaving the truck and the network is destroying it down the line.
Watching via FiOS in Dallas.
jtthasportfreak 10-02-09, 01:33 AM any screencap proof of this ?
Does anyone know if Versus's two games this afternoon from overseas will be shown in HD?
The first game, Florida vs Chicago is at 12 noon from Finland and the second Detroit vs St. Louis is in Sweden starting at 3:00 pm.
Ken??

I believe yes, both games will be HD.

Thanks!
Game 1 Chicago & Florida is HD.
That was a pretty good game, PQ not so much. Very soft with a lot of motion blur.
I hope the next game looks better and the game is just as good.
And the Wings lose, sorry Ken. :D
I find it funny both games today have the logo of the European NHL broadcaster (ESPN America) on the corner boards.
Feanor5503 10-02-09, 07:15 PM I noticed today that when the camera in these hockey games on Versus moved quickly, there seemed to be a dark vertical shadow near the center of the screen on my LG 37 inch LH20. I've noticed something similar during soccer matches on ESPN2 when the camera moves quickly from one end of the field to the other, but not during any other program or while using my PS3.
Is this type of issue with fast motion sport just to be expected on a fairly budget, 60 HZ LCD screen?

I wonder if it's a Comcast thing. HD Caps games on Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic are so soft that they're almost indistinguishable from the games they broadcast in widescreen SD.
That (Chicago vs. Florida in Helsinki, Findland) was a pretty good game, PQ not so much. Very soft with a lot of motion blur.
You can blame some of that on 50i > 60i conversion.
What a great game tonight between the Flyers and Caps. Back and forth the whole game, right into the OT!
I thought the PQ was better tonight as it seemed they finally toned down that edge enhancement that was prevalent the first three nights.
This was a problem last year as well and really wish they would get a handle on this once and for all because the studio shots look great and they should make the effort to transfer that same quality to the ice!
rrainwater 10-07-09, 10:23 AM Versus still insists on putting the letters "HD" on both sides of the score bug. Do they think viewers are stupid and can't read it if it was only on one side? Next thing you know they will put the score bug on the top and bottom.

I have very bad edge enhancement on the main ice camera and the video and audio are out of sync.
Anyone else noticing this.

Yup, center ice camera is real bad tonight. I'm not getting the audio lag though.

I confirm the excessive edge enhancement on FiOS in Annapolis MD. Versus has looked pretty mediocre ever since Comcast started doing their 3:1 QAM packing, and for whatever reason, events from MSG seem to be even worse. This, however, is as bad as I can remember seeing it.

It looked terrible here last night on RCN cable in DC, too. Like poorly upconverted widescreen SD video. They've really taken this experiment too far. Sure, it makes it a little easier to follow the puck, but everything else looks terrible.
That center ice camera last night looked SD widescreen.

I didn't catch it until the third period but if your talking about the Chicago/Columbus game, I thought it was one of their better looking broadcast this year.
It looked blurry on my end too like it was soft filtered.

machpost 12-14-09, 09:33 PM Buffalo at Montreal looks great tonight on Versus. That nasty edge enhancement is gone.
