I am trying to set up a sound system for my room. The room is about 12ft x 12ft. I have a new turntable (Sony ps-lx250h) and a cd player (harmon/kardon hd7400) that was donated to me and is in great condition. I have never set up any type of sound system and I only really know the basic functions of the different kinds of audio equipment, so bear with me.

I recently acquired a barely used Theater Research tr-606 home theater system (no, i didnt get it from the scam people, i got it from someone who did). I hooked the towers up to the subwoofer and the subwoofer directly to the cd player to test it and everything worked. Then I turned everything off and back on and only the sub was working. I was in a hurry, so I never got to mess with it any more than that (All I could really do is check the wires anyway). Aside from this (which might just be a connection problem), the subwoofer has no external controls, and the original remote is lost. I bought a universal remote, but I coulnt find the code anywhere so I still cant control anything. I dont know if I should try to use these or just buy a receiver and some speakers.

Just to see my options, I went to a local music store that I have heard good things about. I told the guy about the size of my room, etc. and he assembled a setup he thought would work for me. It sounded great, but to be honest, I dont know if it is more than I need. It was a Pioneer Elite VSX-99 (they're selling it for $350) and two Definitive Technology BP6 floor speakers ($249 for the pair). He said he would sell the speakers and the receiver together for $500 total. If I had the money, I would have bought them just so I had something that I know sounded good (more than good enough for me) and to save the headache. But I dont have the money right now, so I only want to buy this if it isnt the least bit overkill.

Im just lost as to what I need. I just want to be able to enjoy my music on something other than my ipod, macbook or my cruddy old turntable with built in speakers. (Im more focused on listening to my LP's, I dont have many CD's to be honest.)

Thanks ahead of time if you read this. I know I have a lot to learn, but I dont know where to start and I want to use this turntable already.
