I got an extra room that is 14x11, with 10ft ceilings. We're remodeling our house and this was the last room and the question that my wife and I look at each other and ask is, "What should we do with this room?"

The first thing that came into my mind, "Man Cave" type room. Room for the guys to watch sports with big tv, surround, etc. Well I was looking at 52" + tv's but why settle for that when I could do a Projector setup in HD for about the same price but much larger.

I've seen the Optoma HD20 getting good reviews. My question, Can I do it? Will there be enough room for this projector to display a big enough picture? What type of surround, flush mount speakers in the ceiling? Or floor standing?

Sure, you could do it. You just need to use the proper size screen. And screen size is based on your seating distance from screen. What would distance be? I would say a screen size of 90"-100" diagonal. I would use a 5.1system(if you're going to watch movies also) and I would use small bookshelf speakers mounted on wall for fronts and rears, and a center channel speaker mounted above or below your screen.

The seating will be 10-11ft from the screen. And the projector will be mounted 13-13.5ft away from the screen from the ceiling.

sounds like an extra bedroom?

That sounds about the size of our small bedroom we turned into a movie room

we have-

92' screen mounted about 10' back
small satellite speakers mounted to the ceiling(floor standing are too big for a small room, as long as you have good speakers a small room will make smaller speakers shine if done correctly)
Theater seats pushed back against the wall
black paint

my favorite room in the house :p

good luck

My room is 11x13' and I shoot a 106" diagonal screen with seating approximately 11' back. If I could squeeze a bigger screen between my speakers, I most certainly would.

It started out 24x11, the room is off to the right of the house and used to be a garage and was converted to an additional living room. When we bought the house we took the room and built a new wash room, since we're building a new 3 car garage to attach to the house. Leaving the rest of the room as empty space. I'm just looking for something to finish the room off. Walls are a dark chocolate brown with high 10-12ft ceilings.

Pretty much the same 11'-6" x 13'-6". 106" AT screen with center channel behind the screen. Front and back wall has 3" sound panels. OP your room is big enough for a projection set up, but how many people do you want to seat. I have normal seating for three and a couple additional chairs for a total of five. Room is wide enough that I could have five HT seats, but I do not want seats against the side walls. I am picky regarding the sound aspect of my room. To me sound is just as important as video.

I was looking at just having either 2 recliners or I seen a couch with 3 "bucket" cushions and each reclined. Basically, this is gonna be here for me and my wife. I love my movies and sports. Every now and then a few buddies come over and watch. 3 will seat fine, and if we have more, our nice new carpet that's getting installed in a couple weeks will soften the floor up for their butts. lol
