Hi,

Three years ago I bought my Sony HC94 camera. The (SD-)quality of this camera is good, certainly 3 years ago.
However, HD camcorders are getting more and more common. I wonder if I should upgrade - especially after upgrading my TV to a 46 inch full hd TV.

Basically my question is whether the current flagship consumer camcorders are considerably better than my current camera (also a flagship model three years ago). Or should I wait a few more years?
Please share your thoughts.

Upgrade now! There is always something better coming out, but at this point, HD looks great and nothing will come that looks as dramatic as the shift from SD to HD.

I went from DV to HDV back in '05. At the time, the only consumer HD cam was the Sony HC3. I knew better stuff would come out later (like the Canon HDV cams) but I bought the HC3 'cuz i wanted to record my teenage girls growing up now in HD. Now, four years later, I have a ton of HD tapes and I just got a new Canon HV40 (HDV) cam. if you go with a avchd cam, the ones out now are so much better than the ones that were out just two years ago.
In camcorder mothball yard, I went from vhs-c to Hi8 in '92 (got a Sony 101, first consumer cam with OIS), then made a switch to Panasonic Pv200 3ccd DV cam in '03, went from there to Sony HC3 (HDV)in '05, now on a Canon HV40 (hdv) got last month. I'll probably get a avchd cam in two years. i go on cruises at least twice a year and it is kind of funny how often I seen vintage cams. These are obviously people who bought something a long time ago and use them only for vacations (last summer, saw someone with a shoulder mount RCA VHS cam!). I suggest you buy something now and use it until the lenses pop out!

Yeah, don't wait. Get your HD camcorder now, and in a few years, upgrade again to a Real-D 3D / 2160p camcorder - whatever is out then.

Personally I'd wait until at the very least thanksgiving or later. There will be some very good sales on....
