Not only as a Broncos fan, but also as a football fan in general, i'm not happy with our local KOIN affiliate showing the JAX v. SEA game as opposed to the NE @ DEN game this week.

I sent an e-mail to our local CBS affiliate asking if it was their decision or if they were told by the NFL to carry the JAX v. SEA game. Sooo frustrating!

Woohoo! Being a Dallas fan in Huntsville pays off! 5th week in a row that I get to watch the Cowboys. Hopefully (I mean they are playing the Chiefs!) they'll thwomp KC and put away last weeks game. Win or lose, i'll get to watch it :)

Outside of the rules of what games must be shown in primary and secondary markets, the networks decide what games to show and where.

BTW, from the department of random facts this week we celebrate the 1,200 regular season NFL game broadcast in HD.

Not everywhere. Our fox station (kkfx) has a online poll most weeks and whoever wins they will show that game. If your not in the local market e-mail the programming director about an online poll.

The decision to allow a station pick its game is a network choice, and the ultimate choice is still in the network's hands.

CBS early game has a weird breakdown.

Why would Utah, western Oklahoma, Alaska and Hawaii get Cincinnati @ Baltimore?

Not sure, but it 's probably better than getting OAK/NYG, which "should" be a lopsided game.

I wasn't talking about the sun outage but what games a local station puts on.

When is the sun outage for D* now that it has been brought up?

Why would Utah, western Oklahoma, Alaska and Hawaii get Cincinnati @ Baltimore? Not sure, either, but check the players to see if there are any notable OU or BYU grads. When I was in Cincinnati, we got a lot of Seahawks games. Theorized that was just because Shaun Alexander was a local kid.

This is the response I got from Nichole Myers at KOIN 6 regarding how they select games...

Thank you for your comments.

We decided to keep the Seattle game since the Seahawks are the most popular NFL team in this market.

Since Portland is not an NFL market CBS Sports normally gives us the “flex” feed. This means if the outcome seems obvious by the second half, they will switch to another more competitive game.

How games are chosen:

*CBS Sports sends affiliates the game assignments 12-days in advance.

*Affiliates have 24-hours after receiving the assignment to make changes.

*At KOIN several managers including the President/General Manager and our Sports Department, Dan Chistopherson and Tim Becker, look over the assignments and decide if a change should be made.

*When making a change they take into consideration local interest (does the team have a player from our area, are there fans in our area) and the stats/current standing of the two teams. We want a competitive as well as entertaining game on our air.

Here was my response:

Nichole,
Thanks for your response...

Interesting criteria for sure...still I'd venture that there are more 'football fans' than Seahawks fans in this market who'd like to see the better teams/players play in the late game on Sunday. Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Brandon Marshall, Josh McDaniels vs. his mentor Bill Belichick and two teams vying for AFC supremacy seems much more compelling/entertaining than a 1-3 team hosting a 2-2 team.

As for stats/current standings of teams:

NE (3-1) (ESPN Power Ranking 6th, CBS Sports PR - 7th)
DEN (4-0) (ESPN Power Ranking 8th, CBS Sports PR - 5th)

JAX (2-2) (ESPN Power Ranking 18th, CBS Sports PR - 21)
SEA (1-3) (ESPN Power Ranking 24th, CBS Sports PR - 22)

I can only hope that as the season progresses, the better teams will get the just due they deserve in the Portland market.

Thanks again for getting back to me, i really appreciate it!

It does, go to the website or talk to the programming director Kevin Harlan and find out. They say there the only station that does it.

I'm not sure why you're surprised the Seahawks are going to be aired in Oregon. Makes perfect sense to me.

Kevin is the programming director at kkfx. He is the one that answers e-mails about (You pick the game) which is what they call the online poll to see what game we want to see if there is more then one available for the upcoming weekends.

As an NFL fan, I want to see the best game available and Portland is not Seattle (south), the status quo of showing Seahawks games (esp. when they're not very good), versus showing a better game just speaks to the 'closed-mindedness' of the programming group here in Portland.

Even if KOIN has to choose 12 (or 11) days in advance of the game, the seachickens were not any better then than they are now...while both the patriots and broncos have continued to improve.

Despite being "not Seattle", Portland is in pretty close proximity to Seattle and I presume there are a large pocket of Seahawks fans there due to there not being another NFL team for a large distance. These fans should be deprived of watching their team simply because they do not live in the immediate vicinity of their home team? I think you're putting your wants before the logical decision here.

hehe, well there are a lot more "NFL fans" in the market as opposed to strictly Seahawks fans...yet the pandering continues in a market that actually gets to choose its game each week.

Portland has just as many 49er fans as Seahawks fans I bet. Lucky you, you get to watch both the 9ers and the boo birds... doesn't seem like a bad deal to me. You can't really complain considering your city doesn't even have a team.

There's definitely a lot of Niners fans here in Portland...the only thing i'd like to see is that when given the choice, the CBS local affiliate chooses the best game vs. which team is closest to Portland, that's all i'm saying.

Regardless of fan/team affiliation, which game sounds/looks more compelling?

NE (3-1) @ DEN (4-0)

or

JAX (2-2) @ SEA (1-3)?

I am wondering why the Philly market FOX decided to not show the only 4:15 game??(on FOX)Didn't they show the Philly - TB game? It's CBS' doubleheader week. Fox affiliates can only show early or late but not both. And your CBS affiliate couldn't show an early game due to the fact Philly's at home. Home markets only get one game on the doubleheader network if the home team is at home and on the single-header network. There are exceptions, such as when CBS has golf or FOX has baseball or some other thing that keeps one of the networks from HAVING a late game. I think. It all gives me a headache, sometimes.

I know what you mean. I don't guess there are any secondary markets you can snag with a serious antenna, are there? I have ST, but I also pick up Toledo and Lansing which don't always carry the same games.
