Just moved into a new home and im a bit at a loss as far as what to do with our main TV area. We went with a mounted LCD above the fireplace but I dont know what to do for sound options. The TV is mainly used for TV watching but I would also like it to be used as a source of music for entertaining. Currently they only thing hooked up to it are the Fios DVR and a WDTV box. I am looking for opinions as far as what speakers to get and should I mount them on the wall or get floor standing? Im also thinking that I should just get a stereo receiver since I am not concerned about surround here. I would love to see some pics and ideas of what you guys have done! THANKS!
And I guess its worth mentioning I do not want to go in-wall.

Chris,
I recently installed this phillips speaker bar (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0022NI0NW) for my parents whom had similar requirements. It's a nice clean package with DVD and Stereo all in the main unit.

I also went with the sound bar for convenience and esthetics. I went with the Polk SurroundBar and wireless sub.

You mentioned you want to be able to listen to music and you're not concerned with surround; so I suggest a nice two channel rig - either book shelfs on stands or floor standers. Focus on those that have good low level extension and no sub (with its critical placement issues) is necessary. There is a plethora of options here and you'll definitely be head and shoulders above the speakers in your LCD.
Another thing I recommend is concealment of all wiring (there are many ways to accomplish this); this will raise your installation three notches.
