View Full Version : Multipath-Issue
Glueall20 10-08-09, 02:18 PM My Winegard attenna connects directly to my cheap $40 Digital Tuner bought from Walmart last year.
I can bring in all the local and out of town channels. But in the evening I can not hold them. The picture freezes and sound stops on all channels.
Before forced to go digital, my analog picture usually full of ghosts.
Between my house attenna and tv broad cast towers is a ridge higher than my house lined with trees with leaves.
I believe my tuner may be conflicted with two signals. The direct one and then one being interfered with.
Can anyone recommend a good digital set box tuner that can handle my situation?
winegard 10-09-09, 09:23 AM Good morning Glueall20 -
Could you provide us with a little more information. Zip code? Address? TV Fool report?
Their is probably something else to this besides your digital converter.
Thanks,

I live in a rural setting with hills around me. My Winegard antenna 7084 picks up all the channels local and out of town, but I can't hold any of them, especially in the evening.
There is a small ridge with trees on it ( still have their leaves) behind my house and it stands between the closest local station WETM-18, and my attenna which is directly connected to my converter box ( Magnavox) $40 Walmart Special.
What is a TV Fool Report?
Thank you for your help.
Here's a link to your TVFool results.

Digital Rules 10-10-09, 09:27 AM Are you using a rotator? With the severe signal reflections you are experiencing, many times an antenna aimed off-axis performs better on UHF stations. How well does WBNG-12 come in?
Are you using RG-6 coax?
Reception wise, there is nothing wrong with the Magnavox converter box. I find it to perform well under severe multipath conditions.
rabbit73 10-10-09, 08:07 PM Your signals are quite weak, and the trees make the signals even weaker.
How long is the coax from the antenna to the converter box? Are you using a preamp?
Glueall20 10-10-09, 10:20 PM Thank you for the link and recommendation to protect my privacy.
Glueall20 10-10-09, 10:22 PM Thank you for sharing this with me. I'll report back to eveyone soon with my findings.
Glueall20 10-10-09, 10:24 PM I am using RG-6 coax and yes I have a rotar. WBNG comes in but I am unable to hold it.
Are you using any kind of amp?
winegard 10-12-09, 09:27 AM Taking a look at your location with the address you messaged me I see no reason you should be having difficulties acquiring those signals with that antenna.
A few questions for you...
1. How is your antenna mounted, where on your house and how high?
2. How long is your cable run and how many televisions are you splitting to?
3. Are you using a pre-amplifier and does it have proper voltage going to it?
4. I know you are probably doing this correctly, but you would be amazed at the number of phone calls we take that people are doing this wrong. Please make sure the skinny end of the antenna, not the end with the widest directors, are pointed towards the station you are trying to receive.

Please make sure the skinny end of the antenna, not the end with the widest directors, are pointed towards the station you are trying to receive.I know most everyone on this board knows, but you're right; a lot of people end up pointing them 180° in the wrong direction.
Would it be possible to add a small sticker on the side of your antennas, showing the proper direction to aim them?
systems2000 10-12-09, 11:41 AM He posted that there are no splitters. It is a direct connection.
I'd like to know how old the antenna is and if it has any damage.
DrBri99 10-12-09, 04:36 PM Is the antenna too close to a reflecting source, like a metal roof?
I used to have this problem with signal drop-outs in the evening, solved with a higher mast.
Glueall20 10-13-09, 04:14 PM Thank you for your help.
Hal at your company recommended I purchase a new converter Box and recommended a Digital Stream.
It worked! I am very happy. My Winegard Attena is picking up stations I should not get and holding them. I am enjoying Sunday night football finally. Go Vikings!
Thank you all for your help.
The digitalstream is much better, compared to the Magnavox. Most of those are junk, at least the ones I've seen. Glad it solved your problem. Too bad there are so many junk converter boxes out there.

Thank you all for your help. Now that it's working, what do you think about this whole "forced to switch to digital" thing? Are you happy that the whole transition happened? Imagine how good football will look when you get a high definition TV some day!
Glueall20 10-14-09, 11:38 AM As Darwin taught us, you have to adapt to change in order to survive. So I don't mind the switch. I don't miss my ghosting problem with analog.
After I get my 15 year old through college I might upgrade to HD.
What 40 or 42 inch flat screens do you guys recommend?
Right now: Sony and LG TVs have good, sensitive OTA tuners and the "channel add" feature. Important for antenna users shopping for a TV.
When your 15 year old gets through college: Who knows which TVs will still have good tuners?
winegard 10-16-09, 11:59 AM Glad to hear your up and working. Hans has been here answering questions on antennas longer than I've been alive. He really knows his stuff.
