View Full Version : Is anyone else experiencing green tint issues with ABC?
Tom Imp 10-09-09, 03:16 AM I honestly didn't know where to post this, so if it is in the wrong area I apologize.
Recently I started noticing this green tint with most of ABC's programming. We noticed it while watching Castle the other night and then again while watching Flash Forward and The forgotten. It seems like the lighting is off and people's faces and clothes have this green tint to them.
I have one of those Sony sets that was known for having the "green blob" problem, but I don't think that's the case here as this green tint does not show up on any other station. It's only on ABC.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this issue. Oh, and I'm also on DirecTV in the NY area if that matters.
lragusa 10-09-09, 07:58 AM Yes, I'm having the same issue and only on ABC shows. I'm also on DirecTV in the NY area.

I see the same problem. They must have a problem with their ABC network receiver as it is only network programming.
Tom Imp 10-09-09, 01:33 PM Thanks guys. It sure is a relief to know that it isn't my set. Now to just get ABC to fix this problem as it is quite distracting.
bobby94928 10-09-09, 02:01 PM Maybe it is not ABC, as in the network. You guys all seem to be in the NY DMA. You have to be more specific to know where the issue might be. What channel are you watching, from what city? Who is the service provider, satellite, cable, OTA? When those questions are answered, you might have an idea where to go for help.
They've said it only occurs on ABC network shows, which to me implies it doesn't happen on local programming. This would indicate a network issue or the path for receiving the network at WABC. The greenish look can occur with a slight negative DC offset of the chroma components.
petergaryr 10-09-09, 05:03 PM Just noticed it when I watched FlashForward today. At first I thought it was just scenes under fluorescent lights which I've noticed seem to give a greenish tint to things.
However, this was also occurring in outdoor scenes as well. Very odd that the network commercials look fine. Are we sure this isn't just a "creative choice" on the part of the cinematographer?

No it was on greys anatomy afterwards too & others at dbstalk have mentioned other shows all on wabc only.
I know cinemats are wacked out (dont get me started on grain issues like on BSG) but they are not that wacky.
What DirecTV receivers are you seeing this problem with? I have an H10 that has had this problem with OTA ABC HD programming in 2 different markets but never saw it on an H20 or HR20.

HR20-100 and HR20-700.

Oh.
Well, I don't watch a lot of ABC shows so that blows the "creative" choice option out.
davidbrenton 10-11-09, 09:12 PM I am also having green tint issues w/ ABC and am in the NYC metro area. It's been going on about a week and a half.
I have Direct TV.
I just bought new TV and got worried it was the TV. But it's only this channel. And, notably, green tint mostly occurs on prime time shows. Commercials are also fine. It's just the programs themselves. Every other station is fine.
Everything is connected through HDMI, I switched cables to ensure it wasn't bad HDMI connection.
My friends in the area who do not have Direct TV don't have the issue.
davidbrenton 10-11-09, 09:49 PM My television set is Panasonic TCP50-V10.
I called Panasonic who said it is not an issue with the set since it's only on one channel, does not occur on different media inputs, and is connected to all devices through HDMI. Furthermore if I change tint settings all the way to read, it still appears green on tat channel.
I called DirectTV who at first told me it was the TV, then told me to reset the receiver (Which did not work), and then informed me it looks like other people in the area are having this problem to and it's under investigation.
If anyone hears anything else on this, please let me know as I'm anxious to get a fix for it.
Thanks.
Any other providers? This ALL seems to be DIRECTV subs. Yes, it may be during network time on the ABC stations, but is anyone on cable, telco, or DiSH network seeing this issue?
Sounds like a combo of ABC and D* to me. Not, anything to specific to each entity on its own. IT doesn't have to be a problem with their receivers. What some here are doing is akin to going to the doctor and telling him/her what prescription to write.
More details and less diagnosis is what should be gathered.
davidbrenton 10-12-09, 10:06 PM Well, it's happenning for me again on Castle.
John Mason 10-13-09, 10:25 AM Can't say I noticed any unusual tinting. Watched Flashforward and perhaps other shows from NYC's TWC to a 8300HD STB and a Panasonic TH-65VX100U 1080p 65" plasma @8'. Likely there's a fiber feed to TWC from ABC in Manhattan. Routinely switch the plasma to cinema mode for 24p programming (from standard 1080i/720p), which kicks in a warm temperature setting; then have a few memory settings such as for CBS's CSI:Miami that lessens the color intensity a bit. Standard-mode programming (non-24p) viewed in cinema mode are way too color saturated, which might be related to this plasma's non-standard DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) color feature. -- John
Tom Imp 10-14-09, 11:53 AM So, I just got around to watching Castle which I recorded on both channels 7 (my local ABC) and on 396. We started out watching on 7 and the green tint was there again. Then we switched to watching the recording of channel 396 and it was clear as day. No green that we noticed at all.
So, this is obviously a problem directly with one channel and not a whole network.
PittCaleb 10-14-09, 02:12 PM We watched Flashforward the other night and I thought my 2 months old Plasma was going bad quick! Couldn't believe my eyes. Watched through the end of the show thinking it could be ABC (WABC - NYC), DirecTV, the DVR or the Plasma set itself.
Thankfully after watching a couple other shows, we've decided it was ABC/DirecTV feed of that show. Interesting to see others have had problems with other ABC shows. Man, the PQ was horrible, wonder exactly how this lasted for more than a single show.
