I'm wiring this today and could use some advice.
My Left and Right surround speakers in a 7.1 system would have to be 2-3 feet from each listener and in the ceiling about 8-9 feet high. Is this too close? Does it significantly help if the tweeters can be pointed at the listener?
Thanks!!

Nope.
Try it both ways and see what works best. I am assuming that the tweeters are adjustable.

It's actually going to be in the ceiling. I won't be able to try it out without cutting the ceiling open. The tweeters are adjustable.

You are installing the speakers in the ceiling as you described. Once they are installed, adjust the tweeters before attaching the grilles to see which works best.

oh sorry. I meant that I may make it a 5.1 system and leave out the side speakers if having them located so close to the listener and above will make them of little benefit.
I was thinking if that is the case, I'll use them for patio speakers.

I think you have a misunderstaing of 5.1 versus 7.1.
5.1 places two speakers to the sides of the listening position. 7.1 adds two rear speakers behind the listening position.

Not the first, and unfortunately, won't be the last someone does that.

I told you that the speakers were fine where you planned to locate them in my first response to you.

Thanks. I guess I'll keep it this way.

I was thinking that I would use the back speakers as side speakers and place them more in the back corner to compensate. however, if the side speakers are effective on the ceiling and within a few feet of each side of the listener, then I don't need to worry about it.

So, I installed the speaker wires and realized that I may have miscalculated... it looks like having the surrounds as far apart as possible screws up the placement compared to the rears and the fronts. Basically, my fronts and rears line up perfectly but the left surround is about 1 ft outside of the line between the left front and left rear. And, the right surround is about 3 ft outside of the line between the right front and right rear. Needless to say, the wife doesn't approve. I'll have to bring in the right surround a couple feet so that the rest of the system lines up correctly.
The only real problem is that instead of the surround being 2-3 feet from each side of the sofa, they will be probably 1.5 feet. Is this still okay?
